    1 large red onion, peeled and cut into
      1/2-inch-thick slices
      Olive oil
      Freshly ground pepper
    
    1 tablespoon olive oil
    1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
    1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, crumbled
      Salt
      Red leaf lettuce leaves
    
    2 servings; can be doubled
    
    You can also serve these onions hot.
    
    Preheat broiler.  Arrange onion in baking pan.  Brush with oil.
    Sprinkle generously with pepper.  Broil until softened and be-
    beginning to char, about 7 minutes.  Turn slices over, sprinkle
    with pepper and broil onions until beginning to char, approxim-
    ately 2 minutes.
    
    Transferonion to a bowl.  Seperate into rings.  Mix in 1 table-
    spoon oil, lime juice, oregano and salt.  Cool to room tempera-
    ture.  Arrange lettuce on plates.  Mound onion atop lettuce.
