    I have a recipe that calls for bittersweet chocolate, but I am not
    sure what it is.  Does anyone know how bittersweet differs from
    semi-sweet and baking chocolate?  And where I could purchase some?
    Is bittersweet the same as dark chocolate?

    As far as I know, bittersweet and semi-sweet are the same. Baking
    chocolate is bitter (unsweetened).  Any market should have them.

    I don't know for sure what the difference between bittersweet and
    semi-sweet chocolate is but I can tell you for certain that they
    taste different. The semi-sweet is sweeter.

    baking chocolate is bitter chocolate. Usually found in the baking
    section of most grocers, right next to the sweetened varieties.
    Melt over very low heat.

According to the Silver Palate, semi-sweet and bittersweet are *not* the 
same, and are not interchangeable in recipes unless explicitly stated.  
I've found semisweet in the reg'lar ol' place in the grocery store, of 
course, but bittersweet is a little harder to find.  My grocery store has a 
section that contains "gourmet" candies, and among them is a pretty good 
selection of upscale chocolate bars:  Ghiardelli,  Lindt, Tobler, etc.  
I've gotten bittersweet chocolate bars there and used them in recipes with 
very good success.

    I found a Lindt 'dark chocolate' bar that I'm going to use in the
    recipe.  I'm making a triple chocolate pie.  From reading, talking
    to people and calling candy stores I've gotten alot of different
    answers.  It seems that the difference between bittersweet and
    semi-sweet is the amount of sugar.  I'll post the results next week
    after I bake the pie.

  That's exactly what my wife has been using for years when bittersweet
  chocolate is called for, with perfect results.
