1467.0. "FEENIKIA" by MORGAN::PASKALEY () Wed Oct 26 1988 08:39

    FEENEKIA

    3/4c Mazola Oil (plus 2 T)
    juice of 1 orange
    3/4c sugar
    2 egg yolks
    1 t sald
    4 t baking powder
    4 1/4c sifted flour
    3/4 t cinnamon
    1/4 t cloves
    1 lb. finely ground walnuts

    Beat egg yolks well. Add oil, orange juice, sald and sugar.
    Blend thoroughly. Add flour and baking powder and mix well.

    Mix spices with ground walnuts.

    Pinch off piece of dough about size of large walnut; holding
    it in palm of hand, flatten it out and make a dent in the middle
    with thumg. Place about half a teaspoon of nut filling in dent,
    and seal by pinching edges together. They should appear egg
    shaped. Save leftover nut filling for use later in recipe.

    Place on ungreased cookie sheet, smooth side on top, and
    bake in 375 degree oven about 18 minutes or until light brown.
    (Watch carefully after 15 minutes--these burn quickly). Let cool.

    SYRUP

    1 c sugar
    3/4 c water
    4 oz honey (1/2 jar)

    Boil sugar and water about 5 minutes, or until thick. Add
    honey. Keeping syrup over low flame, but at a slow boil, dip
    each feeniki in syrup, turning over and over till it absorbs
    some of the syrup (about a minute).

    With straining spoon, remove it from syrup and immediately roll
    in remaining ground nut mixture.

    TO STORE

    Once the feenekia have cooled my mother used to store them in
    tupperware between layers of waxed paper.

    What is Saled? Where can you buy it?

1467.2Another Question!SALEM::MGAGEThu Mar 15 1990 09:549
Another question...anyone ever make these? The recipe calls for
    cloves...should the cloves be crushed? I didn't think you were
    supposed to eat cloves!

    As you can probally tell, cooking is not one of my strong points!

    thanks.

1467.3Ground clovesREORG::AITELNever eat a barracuda over 3 lbs.Thu Mar 15 1990 12:4710
    Ground cloves are sold in the grocery store in the spice section.
    They're used just like ground cinnamon and ground dried ginger
    are - as an addition to cakes and other sweets and some savory
    dishes.

    Whole cloves are what you're probably thinking of - they're not
    too good to eat whole. But that goes for whole stick cinnamon,
    too.
