This really should be a pretty simple request, but does anyone know where I can find ground almonds? I've been looking in all the local grocery stores (Boston area) and can't find them anywhere. I'm going to need them for marzipan (almond paste) at Christmas - I could try grinding them myself but it needs to be *real* fine. I could also buy almond paste ready made but I prefer to make my own. Am I just looking in the wrong places? Any suggestions? ...Robert

Try a Jewish grocery store, such as The Butcherie, on Harvard Street. Ground nuts of various sorts are often used in place of flour to make cakes and things during Passover. Of course, I don't know offhand if they carry the ground almonds now, since Passover was months ago, but it's worth a try. PS-They are closed on Saturdays, of course, but are open Sunday mornings until some time in the early afternoon.

At one time I was also searching for ground almonds and did not find them. I remembered seeing a Frugal Gourmet show where he used a Krups coffee grinder to grind some nuts. Since I had one of these, I tried grinding almonds to a very fine grind. It worked great. Hope you have a coffee grinder. Ken...

I needed some finely chopped walnuts once and decided to experiment and try chopping them in the blender. They came out very finely chopped and some of the nuts at the bottom of the blender were a little pasty (a little toooo finely chopped but still worked)...so if all fails you could try the blender. Well just for the record, I finally found them, at the Butcherie in Coolidge Corner, as suggested in .1. (Though, after all that, I forgot to check how much I needed and didn't buy enough. Oh well). Thanks for all your suggestions. This was worthwhile. ...Robert |
