817.0. "Store: Gourmet Meats?" by DAIRY::LASSEN (Live free - Ride hard) Mon Nov 16 1987 12:27

    I'm looking for the name of a gourmet meats distributer. If such
    a thing exsists. I've searched this confernece for /KEYWORD=BEEF,
    there is only one note referencing beef. The situation is this :
    My mother (located in Ma.) would like to send a special cut of very
    top quality beef (and/or any other meat you may want to suggest)
    to my uncle (located in Ca.). Is anyone aware of a service that
    would be able to handle such a request?

    Thanks in Advance,
    -Pam Lassen

817.1Omaha SteaksBIGA2Z::DUGDALEMon Nov 16 1987 15:5215
    Try Omaha Steaks. They are a mail order firm and although I have
    just placed my first order with them (a Christmas present for my
    mother-in-law), I have been served their products by a friend.

    They have an 800 number which I found in an advertisement in the
    back of a Bon Appetit magazine. I'm sure that you could get the
    number from 800 information. (Just dial 1-800-555-1212 and ask!)
    They do advertise extensively in cooking magazines this time of
    year.

    If you do call, be sure and ask what is on special. It helps.
    They are not cheap. Also note that you can specify delivery date.
    We ordered several weeks ago for delivery the week of December 14th.

    Consumer Reports had a review of mail order steaks (and other foods)
    in the last month or two.

817.3Consumer Reports reviewers incompetantPSW::WINALSKIPaul S. WinalskiThu Nov 19 1987 17:466
Their review of mail order steaks was just as incompetant as most of their
reviews of consumer goods. I think they object to steaks because they don't
come with any safety device to prevent you from food-poisoning yourself if
you let them go bad and then eat them anyway.

817.4Sent them off...DAIRY::LASSENMon Dec 14 1987 07:149

    My Mom called Omaha Steaks and was given a regular price for a steak.
    She then asked if anything was on special and they had TWO of the first
    mentioned steaks for less then the price of one! She was very pleased
    and mail-ordered them for her brother-in-law.

    Thanks Susan
