748.0. "Polish Food? (kiske)" by HELIX::CZERNY () Mon Oct 05 1987 15:24

I've just recently moved to MA. Does anyone know which town or towns
have a Polish community? I'm interested in finding some kishke (sp?).

    There is a large Polish community in Worcester. Try Golermo's -
    you can see his ad for video's on the side of his building from
    I290. There is also a deli on Water St, and a meat market in
    Posner Sq. - I think it's Fairway Beef. I'm sorry I'm not too
    clear on this - I've been to these places only a couple of times.
    Contact me if you need more info.

    There is a good deli in Chestnut Hill called The Bagel. It's the
    only place I will eat breakfast out and we live about an hour away.
    If you want true Kosher, try some of the ones in Brookline on Harvard
    Ave.

    RE:.2

    Amen! Even in Brooline and Newton there are not REAL good
    Kosher deli's!

    RE:.3

    The deli on Water Street is called Weintraub's. He get's
    his 'stuff' from NYC but it'll cost you.

    WHy buy kiske, make it yourself!  8-}

    Seriously, try the town of Clinton. There is a VERY large
    Polish community there.

748.6who stole the kiske, from the butcher's shop?PSW::WINALSKIPaul S. WinalskiTue Oct 20 1987 00:136
There is a place called Rhein's New York Deli in Vernon, Connecticut (off rte
86), of all places. Friends from Brooklyn have had good things to say about it.
If you're in Connecticut, you might try New Britski (er, New Britain), which
has a large Polish community, for kiske.

    	You might also try looking in HUMAN::BAGELS which
    	contains alot of information about similiar ethnic foods
    	and deli's.

    Essem...The people who make hotdogs, they are based in Lawrence,
    MA. They produce all kinds of polish sausages. Call them and see
    which grocery chains the deliver to. I do know however that Alexanders
    in Salem, NH on RT. 28 (So. Broadway) carries it. They get their
    deliveries on Wed I believe.

    If you're out in Western Mass., Ludlow and Holyoke have large
    Polish populations. I don't know specifics...maybe some of
    our Westfield employees could help you.

    I don't think you mean Holyoke. You're probably thinking of Chicopee.

    What *is* kiske? Is that what I'm thinking of as "kishka" - e.g.,
    blood sausage?

    PS ~ I have always loved kishka... and will still eat it... BUT wish my
         husband NEVER read the ingredients to me! What's a groat!

    I believe that a groat is a kernel of bulgar wheat.
