| ...say, I was wondering....will this work equally well with a lemon?

| Absolutely, but don't try it with a grapefruit unless you're
considering remodeling your kitchen. Oranges are about as brave
as I'd get. Tangerines are a special treat!

651.4 | YES, baked lime | GUNSTK::MEDVECKY | | Tue Jul 28 1987 08:25 | 16 |
| .....when you make this baked lime you arent going to eat the skin...
so it doesnt matter that its black....just like in blackened redfish
you dont eat the black stuff.....
Sure its real, although the author of the note got a little carried
away with describing what it does in terms of smoke, fire alarms,
etc......Have you ever broiled a steak under a gas flame? You know
how much that smokes? Well, thats about the extent of it...
While the outside does get a mite burned, the heat has an amazing
affect on the pulp and juice inside and most of the tartness is
gone....although there is a tinge of it left....
If youve never had a baked lime you havent lived!!!!!!!

| Amazing, I didn't actually think anyone else had done this before.
After being asked what good recipes there were for lime, I
spontaneously made up a recipe for baked lime, and of course we
had to try it. The result tastes a little like hot apple pie.

Well then, I'll have to go get a lime and try it. As far as lime
recipes go there's always Key Lime Pie, I don't have the recipe
with me, but I will get it.

651.9 | There is no black stuff | NULL::TORNHEIM | | Thu Jul 30 1987 10:38 | 8 |
| I'd like to clarify the matter on the black stuff. For some reason
there is a misnomer that the baked lime will have a black skin.
If you do try this recipe, you will find that indeed this is not
the case. Waiting until the skin turns black would probably cause
the kitchen to become so filled with smoke that you couldn't find
the oven to turn it off. The baked lime is actually a faded yellow
color.

| Do you usually serve the baked lime as a dessert? Have you
ever served it with a main meal? What are your serving
suggestions?

651.11 | midnight snack | NULL::TORNHEIM | | Thu Jul 30 1987 13:46 | 3 |
| Baked lime works well as a midnight snack, especially with overcooked
hard-boiled eggs.

651.12 | Boiled lime!!! | MPGS::BUSWELL | | Thu Aug 06 1987 13:52 | 3 |
| You should try boiled lime. It is easyer than baked and if
you don't let the pot boil out there is no smoke.

651.13 | ..good snack.. | GUNSTK::MEDVECKY | | Mon Aug 10 1987 13:20 | 19 |
| .....overcooked hardboiled eggs......hmmmmmmmmmm.....
You know, you have some unusual recipies....are these things
that youve gotten from exotic places or are you a talented,
still undiscovered, chef.....
If its not too complicated, would you share your overcooked
hardboiled eggs with us? It sounds smashing......
You know, in another note theres some discussion about the proper
way of making chicken soup....you might have the answer to this...
do you cook your chicken bones before making the stock (gee, maybe
I should ask if you USE chicken bones for chicken soup)?
I must say, the baked lime and egg sounds like just the thing for
a midnight snack....might it go well with cold, greasy, kilbasa,
and a glass of milk (lukewarm, of course)?

651.14 | ...BOILING????? | PATSPK::MEDVECKY | | Tue Aug 11 1987 13:56 | 12 |
| Re: -12....now anyone worth their salt would NEVER boil a lime..
Why, you should never boil anything, except chicken, of course,
because you boil all the flavor out of it..
I can see that you are an inexperienced chef to suggest such
degrading actions towards a LIME...why, thats like suggesting
that crepe suzettes are pancakes.....
Boiling DOES eliminate a lot of the smoke but the flavor suffers
dramatically....

| As I mentioned previously, if you really want to live dangerously,
substitute a grapefruit for the lime in any of these recipes.
