QUICK!! Call your local meat market or butcher and order a fresh
bird for pick-up on the day before Thanksgiving...they will
usually give one that is within 3 lbs. of the weight you request...
like 15 - 18 lb.

Fresh birds are easier to schedule around anyway, as you don't have
to figure out how to defrost the sucker...

    I have raised turkeys, the poults are expensive ($1.75-2.00) each.
    The idea is to make a profit, the standard turkey is six months
    old, hens dress out at 10 llb or so toms well above 15 llb.  If
    your flocks hens are 15 llb you have made money if your toms are
    15 llb you lost.  Bye the way you can't just buy toms.

    LIVE turkeys.  They're in a pen outside the store.

How much to allow per pound = approx. 6 - 8 oz. per person...lots of
bones in the rest of the bird..

For Silicon Valleyites:  Fresh birds, excellent quality, monster
			 size can be had at Cosentino's in San Jose
		         or Sunnyvale.  I got a 23 pound wonder
			 bird last year.  I think they go up to 26.

       I have never cooked for more than 4 people, and this year I
    am having about 12 people ove for Thanksgiving.  My question
    is as to what size turkey should I get?  Any help would be appreciated.

    I always get the largest I can get.  You might want to consider a 22-24
    pounder for the folowing reasons:
    
    Enough for everyone at the dinner,
    Then I always do up plates for each to take home.
    And of course I need some for my own leftovers.
    
    

    
    	I just read something this morning which answered this same
    question.
    
    	The book stated 1 to 1 1/2 pounds per person for generous
    portions or average portions and leftovers.

    	My sister is having 30-35 people this year.  She is ordering a
    	complete cooked dinner (complete with pies)from Mellow-Lanes in

    It is easy.  I am always tempted until I ask how much.  I then think
    what I could do with all that money if I made it all myself.  Maybe it
    should become a Christmas present to myself, or even have the kids get
    together and give it to us for a Christmas present.  I mean now I ask
    for a gift certificate to the beauty shop for a permanent so I could
    give them a choice this year.
    
    When I ordered mine this morning I purposefully didn't ask how much the
    bird was going to cost me 'cause I know they will be down to $0.49 at
    the stores the week before the holiday.

 A 12-14 pound turkey is plenty for 12 people, especially if you have 
stuffing and all the rest of the fixings.

    Last year I ate a friends home for Thanksgiving and Christmas and both
    times they served turkey from Bob's Turkey Farm.  I don't think I
    will ever eat a frozen turkey again.  For the quality, freshness,
    taste and amount...you can't go wrong with the price.
    
    I'm calling to put my order in today.  I won't be home for Thanksgiving
    dinner this year either - but I plan on cooking a big one over that
    week-end anyway - they are THAT good!

    P.S.  In answer to the basenoter's question - I would figure on 2
          lbs per person.  Anything left over is excellent for sandwiches,

I just called Bob's.  You can order a fresh turkey from 12 to 30 pounds.

Yikes!  A 30 lb bird?

    Yes, my mother cooked a 28lb bird and she was jsut able to get it in
    the oven.
    
    PS there wasn't much left over either!
