291.1 | SPIEDIES ? | STONED::GOLDSTEIN | | Thu Jul 10 1986 17:42 | 9 |
| Do they have spiedies in Buffalo ? It was a popular thing to eat
when I went to school in Binghamton, NY. I can't recall what made
spiedies any different from basic shish-ka-bob but I did like
them !!

| You could bring back TED's hotdogs or find out how John & Mary's
makes their hotsauce for an "A-BOMB". I know of a butcher in Mansfield
Mass. that makes the same sausage patties that John & Mary's sells.
Now is we could only find out about the sauce.
You definitely must buy WEBBER's horseradish mustard and BISON brand
french onion chip dip. And if you could find a way to get BOCCE
to deliver a pizza to New England we could show New Englander's
what a real pizza should taste like.
I am from Buffalo and it is a great place to live. (AND it does
not start snowing in JULY).
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.
Maybe one of these days we former BUFFALOIAN's should get together
and reminisce about the good ol' times.
GO BUFFALO.

| re: .7 Whenever my brother visits from Fredonia one of the "musts"
for him to bring is the Bison Brand F.O. Dip. Why can't anyone else
make it as well?
re: French Fries....make sure they're "curly fries", haven't had
good ones in years.
Also, how about Kaufman's Rye Bread? Always was the best. I'm still
trying to find other brands that compare.
I lived in Fredonia the first 21 years of my life and we got a lot
of the spill-over foods from Buffalo. I was there over the 4th and
have to admit, ate way too much! But I only get there once a year
so its a treat.
Enjoy!

291.15 | More on Bocci's | ANYWAY::ZIMMERMAN | | Wed Nov 05 1986 16:27 | 25 |
| My wife and I were back in Buffalo last August, and - guess what
- Bocci's has two new pizzas! We didn't try the Hawaiian pizza
(ham and pineapple - sounds gross), but the TACO pizza was pretty
good. I know a guy who works at Bocci's on Bailey. He says a
taco pizza is basically cheddar and mozzarella with shredded beef
cooked in Ortega taco sauce. Might be some Italian sausage in
there as well, plus a "secret spice" or two.
This guy also claims that Bocci's pizzas taste a little different
now. He attributes it to their switching from their standard
flippy boxes to crush-proof corrugated ones. He says if you
reheat corrugated-box pizza in a regular flippy box (the half
pizzas still come in the old boxes), the traditional flavor comes
back. So how about that, Bocci fans? It may have all been in
the box.

Of course, beef on weck needs horseradish. We went to a Bells in
North Buffalo to get a bottle and - hard to believe - the only
thing they had was some slimy sauce made by Kraft. No way! We
took a trip to the Broadway Market (the Brudvay Market?) and got
it fresh.

| No, I never did have the party as weekends were totally consumed
by hunting fever and children. But I still have about a pound of
kielbasa left of the original 10 pounds, a few bottles of Nance's
Buffalo Wing sauce (I DON'T RECOMMEND IT!), and loads of bottles
of Vernors, and I'm headed for Buffalo again on Friday the 26th!
What a difference in kielbasa from Buffalo and kielbasa from here
(Nashua, NH). It's much less fatty and is spiced just right. No
long-lasting effects either, if you get my drift.
I did serve all my goodies at a holiday party I had last week as well
as for other get-togethers. I like the idea of all Buffalonians
getting together for a Flamingo party though. Is anyone "game" to
have it? I'd certainly help!

291.21 | Horsemeat and Spiedies | TUNDRA::SOJDA | | Tue Feb 03 1987 13:56 | 29 |
| RE .9 and .12 - the jokes about horsemeat
There was in fact a meat market in Binghamton, NY that sold horsemeat
for a brief time in 1973. For those that can remember back that
far, the price of meat had skyrocketed such that hamburger was selling
for an unbelievable $1.39/lb. or so.
My cousin and I were graduate students sharing an apartment on a
tight budget. At the time, horsemeat seemed a preferable alternative
to eating canned spaghetti everyday.
The market soon closed due to bad publicity and people becoming
accustomed to the high meat prices. It seemed that most of the
customers were students anyway.
re .1 - Spiedies
You can't get spiedies in Buffalo or anyplace in New York (or the
world) except Binghamton. For those that are not familiar with
Spiedies, they are a marinated meat which is grilled on a skewer,
like shish kebob except there is just meat no vegetables or anything
else. After they are grilled, you take a slice of Italian bread,
grab the meat with it, and slide it off the skewer. You then eat
it like a sandwich. They are delicious!!
I will try to find some recipies that I have for making the marinade
and put them in a separate note.
