| I had pretty good luck with Mike's meat market, which is in your area.
They used to make their own sausage, but I'm not sure if they still do.
It's in a small strip mall on 111A just before you get to rt 3,
next to Christopher's and I believe a laundry.

| I second the recommendation of Mike's Meat Market. It's on the corner
of Northeastern Blvd. and (Main?) Dunstable Rd.
When my husband and I lived in Nashua I often shopped there and found
the quality of the meat very good. However, I bought beef so I can't
give you an educated opinion on the veal. And I believe they still do
make their own sausage.

| Mike's is good, but last time I bought sausage there is was not
homemade, I think it was made by Schonlands or one of the other
local packers.
The Meat Shoppe on the DW Highway in S. Nashua does carry their
own homemade sausage. I go there and I find their service and
selection to be excellent.

| The only time I went into Mikes it looked like a poor selection. But
never bought anything there so I don't know about the quality.
I like Mr. Steer (or something like that, my husband and I always call
it the 'Cow-meat' store anyway). Its out on 101/Amherst street in Nashua.
Past Kealy farms on the opposite side, directly accross from Deangleos.
I don't know about thier sausage, but they are friendly and helpfull. I
like to by Veal also and they are always more than willing to order anything
also.

| re -1. The shop is called "The Steer Meat Shop". I also shop there
and have found both the selection and quality to be excellent.
You can also order over the phone (once you're sure you like it)
and pick it up the next day. Working in Merrimack I like to do
this (even though it means Amherst Street at 5pm, augh :-) ).

I am looking for a butcher shop in the Marlboro area. I used to
go to Meat King in Sudbury for my custom meat order but he seems
to have closed.
Does anyone know of a place around this area or do I have to resort
to driving all the way to Waltham when I want a custom order?

I haven't been there in a while, but there is a little place next to the
Victory market on rt 62 in Maynard. Since I've moved from the area, I've
taken to talking to the manager of the meat dept in my favorite grocery (a
large Market Basket) and found him very receptive to special orders as long as
I give a bit (more than when I used a butcher) of advanced notice. Doesn't
hurt to talk to them. If you can make it to the place on a weekday before 5,
you should be able to talk to the manager without feeling rushed.

located next to the Union House Restaurant on Rt. 126. It's really
not a supermarket, just a little "superette" with the butcher (Frank)
located in the back. Family-run business...

123.32 | butcher for bulk beef??? | CASPRO::DUNN | | Fri Sep 08 1989 10:20 | 19 |
|
We have a seperate freezer and usually buy a rounds of beef to split
with my parents. They are from upstate NY, and get the beef from a
butcher there.
Well, they've sold their house and now we need a source of bulk beef
in MA. We've been spoiled by this other butcher in that the meat is
always wonderfully cut, in packages exactly the size we specify, prime
grade, and next to no fat.
Between work, home, and family we cover from Maynard, to Chelmsford,
to Hanover. Additionally, we would be willing to drive a bit for it
since we do it so seldomly. I would figure that west of Maynard would
have better prices, but that's only assuming that beef cattle is
farmed in western MA.
Any suggestions of where I could try??
Thanks,

| This is a 5-years-later update, but I've lived in Nashua all my life
and the best butcher is in a little hole-in-the-wall store called
Lavoie's on Kinsley St. Take exit 5-E and stay in the left-hand lane.
Lavoie's has a tiny parking lot on Kinsley so don't blink or you'll
miss it! Or, you can take the street it faces and park there. They
have the best prime rib in the world, and they cut roasts to order, and
generally will give you cuts that are dictated from cookbooks that all
the other butchers seem glazed-eyed over when you request them. And
the butcher is very nice and will even tell you the best ways to cook
the meats he cuts!

RE: .7
How do their prices compare to other places? I have found that the
Hilltop Butcher is quite well priced. Boneless chicken is what I
usually buy for meat and it is regularly priced at $2.99/lb and
sale price is $1.99/lb.

| Can anyone name the butchers that will sell you bones? So far the only
place I found was just south of the New Hampshire border in Tyngsboro -
I forget the name.
When I went to Hilltop and asked for bones, the guy just laughed and
said that they get all their meat pre-cut and flown in from Texas.
How's a guy going to make some real stock in this country?

out, ring the little bell and ask the butcher.
If you are in the Milford area, the IGA on 101A will have them, and there is
a butcher across the road that also has excellent meats and will sae the
bones for you.

| Now there's a lady with good taste!
In addition to Blood's in Groton (whose meat is variable, because
they're supplied mostly by small, local growers), there's a butcher on
101A toward Amherst called Paul's Choice II. Haven't tried the pork,
there, but the beef is superior to supermarket stuff, and I'm told
he'll gladly special stuff like fresh rabbit (not frozen) on request.
I'm not sure but this may be the same location (new owner) as the place
mentioned in reply .5.

Groton. Where in Groton is it? In the center? I'll also try the
place in NH some weekend. I'd like to try fresh rabbit, too. I've only
had rabbit sausage and. although it was delicious, it's hard to
attrubute the flavor completely to monsieur lapin! (I have a French friend
who was amazed that I'd never had rabbit. She grew up on a farm in
Normandy and had it a couple of times a week.)

| Blood's is on rt 225 west of the center of town. It's almost at the Shirley
town line. If you get to the bridge at the Sqannicook river, you have gone too
far. Although it's pretty hard to miss. It's on the left. Be careful pulling
out, cause just past the driveway is a curve/hill that people tend to come down
kinda fast.

You lucky folks in Ireland can get meat that actually tastes like

meat is supposed to have some *flavor*.
