34.0. "oriental-style steak" by ROYAL::AITEL () Wed Oct 03 1984 12:07
This is an experiment that worked out. Ingredients given are
for two people.
STEAK:
1 steak large enough for two people (this varies with the people)
THAWED OUT!
soy sauce
honey (NOT sugar)
garlic (1-2 cloves fresh, or the equivalent from a jar)
ginger (fresh preferably, ~ the same amount as the garlic)
cooking sherry
vegetable oil (peanut or corn is good)
2 large onions
SIDE-DISHES:
rice or oriental noodles (Raman type)
stir-fried veggies or some other veggie - salad if you like.
between 1 and ?? hours before dinner:
>>note - if you're using cheap steak, do this the day before.
- If you have a microwave, get out a small glass container (a 1-cup
measuring cup will do) - otherwise do this in a small pot. Press
the garlic into the container. Add the ginger (finely minced, if
fresh) and 2TBSP oil. Then add 4 TBSP soy sauce, 2 TSP honey and
4 TBSP sherry. Heat this up (30 sec in the microwave) until the
honey is all dissolved but the mixture has not boiled.
- Cut the steak into 2 pieces, the size that each of you usually
eats for dinner. Get out a glass covered dish that the steak
will fit into. Put the steak in it and pour the marinade over
it. Let it sit, in the fridge if it's ?? hours.
30 min before dinner:
Chop up all veggies for stir-fries or make the salad. Take the
steak out of the fridge. Peel the onions and cut them first in
half and then into thin slices. Heat some butter or oil in
a skillet large enough to fry up the onions. (Note: all chopping
can be done well before-hand, if you want to relax before dinner.)
20 min before dinner:
- start the rice. Follow the directions on the package. Usually
it's 1 cup rice to 2 cups water in a pot that'll hold AT LEAST
1 quart. If you're making noodles, follow package directions.
- start frying up the onions, at a medium heat.
- heat up some oil in a wok or other pan, if you're making stir
fries.
- heat up some oil in a pan to fry the steak in.
10 min before dinner:
- start frying the steak - drain it well first. It usually takes
5 min per side at a med-high heat.
- start the stir-fries.
- pour the rest of the marinade over the onions and stir them well.
When the steak is done, remove the onions to a serving platter and put
the steak on top of them.
You probably won't have to call them for dinner. They'll be there.
