| In addition to the recipes, it might be fun to include a little history
or background on how the recipe was obtained or anything else of interest.
For instance, if you passed down the recipe for corn bread that is said
to have been what Robert E. Lee ate before he went to battle, it would make
the recipe a little more fun.
You get the idea.

1.2 | keyword creation now unrestricted | PSW::WINALSKI | Paul S. Winalski | Sat Dec 20 1986 22:14 | 10 |
| I have received several requests to add new keywords to this conference.
Since my time is very limited (I can only afford to look in on this conference
once a week or so), and because I favor a laissez-faire (sp?) approach to
NOTES, I have removed the restriction on keyword creation. Now anybody can
create a keyword if they wish. Please do SHOW KEYWORDS first to see if a
similar keyword already exists, and exercise sane judgement. We'll try
unrestricted keyword creation for a while and see how it goes. If you think
it's becoming a problem, let me know via MAIL and the issue can be revisited.

1.3 | Notes Help | COMET::TIMPSON | So far so good. So What! | Fri Jan 27 1989 08:41 | 39 |
|
It is easier to understand and enjoy the Colorado notes
VAX Notes Conference better if you know some of the commands and rules
which could help you find the Topics you want to read and respond to.
Please read all of the following instructions before participating
further in the Colorado Conference:
To find a Topic in CO, write this command at the Notes> prompt in
the upper left corner of the screen (with it being understood that you
then press the RETURN key after writing this and most of the other
commands listed here):
DIR/TITLE=topicname
To view Topic titles in the Conference Directory in list form,
write:
DIR LAST-1 or DIR 1-LAST
If looking through the Directory for a particular Topic fails,
write this command example:
SEARCH Skiing
This will take you to the very first mention of Skiing in the
Conference. Continue to write (or call up) the command SEARCH (you
do not have to write the name of the item you are looking for again,
until you start looking for a new item), and it will take you
continuously to the next reference to Skiing
To set the CO Conference so that you can read and keep up
with the latest Replies and Topics in CO write this command:
SET SEEN/BEFORE=YESTERDAY
Then when you want to read the most recent Noters' entries in the
Conference, press the ENTER key from now on.

1.4 | more help | COMET::TIMPSON | So far so good. So What! | Fri Jan 27 1989 08:42 | 38 |
|
The commands for REPLYING to a Note and WRITING your own Topic
are rather straightforward:
If you want to reply to a particular comment, just write REPLY
at the Note you want to respond to, and press RETURN. Write your
commentary, and when you are through, press CONTROL Z; you will be
asked to put in a title for your Reply. When you have written your
title, press RETURN, write YES that you want to put your Reply in,
press RETURN again, and there is your Reply, all safe and snug in the
proper Topic.
To write your *own* Topic (do *not* confuse this with REPLY), just
write the command WRITE and press RETURN. Then write your new Topic
(First make certain that it has *not* been done before, though), then
press CONTROL Z, create your title, and press RETURN again (it is similar
to REPLY).
If you have an article in your main non-NOTES directory,
to add it to the Conference in the *appropriate* Topic, just write
REPLY filename.TXT (make sure it is a .TXT file), then do every
other procedure like a regular REPLY command mentioned above.
If you want to copy a Note in the Conference, write SAVE and
press RETURN at the Note you want to save. You will then be
prompted to make up a name for it (Do not write .TXT after the name,
as that is done automatically); then write the Note's (or Notes')
number (120.0-.5, for example), and in approximately one minute, you
will receive a message stating that those Notes have been copied to
your main non-NOTES directory.
If you want to make your own PERSONAL NAME - those clever
and sometimes informational phrases which appear immediately after
your user name at the left of the Note's header - write this command:
SET PROFILE/PERSONAL_NAME="Clever phrase."

1.5 | and again | COMET::TIMPSON | So far so good. So What! | Fri Jan 27 1989 08:43 | 38 |
|
Please use *correct* grammar and spelling when possible. Write
your commentaries clearly and precisely. Do *not* use ALL CAPITALS
when writing: It is considered SHOUTING in Notes, and is not
appreciated by other Noters, unless you have a legitimate reason for
being angry about something in the Notesfile.
Please put your commentaries in their *proper* Topics.
If your commentary is in the wrong Topic, it will be moved to the
correct location in the Conference. Please do *not* enter commentaries
which are *not* about and/or related to CO. Such items will be removed
from the Conference and returned to you. Do *not* use obscene or
offensive words or phrases, as such a Note will be removed immediately
from the Conference and returned to you. If you have comments, questions,
or problems about VAX Notes which you are unable to answer yourself,
please contact the Moderator about them - do *not* write them in the
Conference, as they too will be removed and returned to you.
It is a good idea to just READ through the Conference at first for
a while, to get a feel of what CO Topics exist and where they are
located - and what has already been written - before replying, or
writing your own Topic.
To learn more about KEYPAD commands, just press the PF2 key when
in Notes. For more detailed information on Notes in general,
write the command HELP when in Notes. Also, I highly suggest
reading the SAMPLE_CONFERENCE (NOTES$SAMPLE) Conference, which is
automatically supplied with every Notesfile in your VAX Notes Main
Directory. You can also order the USER'S GUIDE TO VAX NOTES
Manual (Order Number AI-G98HA-TE), which can be ordered through your
Secretary.
These are just a few VAX Notes commands and rules, but they are
the most helpful, and they naturally apply to *all* of the VAX Notes
Conferences. They will help you participate in SF better, and I hope
you enjoy the Notes!

1.6 | An explaination | COMET::TIMPSON | So far so good. So What! | Fri Jan 27 1989 08:49 | 9 |
| I pulled the previous information out of the Colorado notes file
which I am the moderator for. It is a simple help file which will
help the novice noters to be able to navigate through the notes system
a little easier. I did not edit it to reflect cooks so it will
still mention Colorado. I have also write locked this file so if
you have any questions just type SEND/AUTHOR and the notes utility
will invoke the mail utility and you can send me mail.

1.7 | Please read note 2007.* for helpful hints | VAXRT::CANNOY | despair of the dragons, dreaming | Fri Sep 22 1989 14:41 | 10 |
| If you are a new noter or are just new to COOKS, please read thru note
2007. This note give lots of very helpful information on how to find
things in this file. Please use the information in this note before
asking whether a particular recipe exists in here or not. This is a
very large file and those sort of notes tend to clutter it up.
Note 2007 can also be found by doing DIR/KEYWORD=HELP at the Notes>
prompt.

1.8 | Valuing Differences in Food | PSW::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Mon May 07 1990 17:52 | 8 |
| Recently, there have been several replies of the "ugh, that's disgusting!" sort
in response to posted recipes or types of food.
Please, let's keep in mind that we all have our likes/dislikes/prejudices
regarding the food we eat, and that these differ widely from culture to culture
and person to person.

1.9 | co-moderator | PSW::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Wed Nov 20 1991 16:06 | 8 |
| Please welcome Danielle Hache as co-moderator of COOKS. I've recently
received several suggestions that this conference be better organized (e.g.,
merge all the zucchini topics) so that when people want to look up a recipe,
all the info will be in one note. Danielle has volunteered to take on the
work of merging the topics and moving the furniture around so that we have a
better organized, more usable COOKS conference.

1.10 | On Making This File More Organized | TIMBER::HACHE | Nuptial Halfway House | Fri Nov 22 1991 16:20 | 26 |
|
Hi.
This is a plea from your new co-moderator! There is alot of
"furniture" to be moved around. Please bear with me as I fumble and
make alot of noise. I have spent the past week creating lists of
topics to be moved (so that I'm not moving anything haphazzardly) and
some of the topics are very intimidating (do you know how many apple
anythings we have in here? And check out the Official Turkey Note! 5.*)
Anyway, while in the past it has not been the policy of the moderators
to write-lock things, I have talked to Paul about it, and we agreed
that during this transitional phase, new notes created that could have
been included in other already existing discussions will be temporarily
write-locked. You (the author) are free to disagree with me (one of
you already has successfully disagreed with me). My goal is not to be
a dictator, but to save myself the extra work of moving another note
that could have been in the original note from the start.
Thanks to those of you who have written with encouragement and
suggestions.
Here's to a usable and manageable COOKS Notesfile!
Thanks!

1.12 | State of the Notesfile Address | PINION::HACHE | Nuptial Halfway House | Mon Jan 20 1992 13:51 | 24 |

The Re-Organization of COOKS has been going well. I really can see the
light at the end of this tunnel, it's not too far off now!
I really appreciate the support and encouragement I have received from
many of you, and I want to especially thank Ed Fisher who is working as
hard as I am at this project. Many times I ask him to find things for
me, or run lists of things and he is always willing and very
resourceful. He also helps in pointing people to existing discussions
which saves me alot of work.
I am pleased to tell you that starting tomorrow (hopefully, if I did
everything right) note 5.0 in this conference will be a directory of
all the topics that have been written. Larry Vigneault deserves the
credit for this. He sent me the batch program and hand held me through
starting the process. We'll know tomorrow whether or not I listened
straight!
Thanks Ed and Larry for your help, and to everyone else for your
patience and encouragement!

1.13 | Do not post the Mrs. Field's/Neiman-Marcus cookie recipe!!! | TLE::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Tue Jan 21 1992 14:19 | 12 |
| Lately, there's been a rash of postings of the alleged "Neiman-Marcus" or
"Mrs. Field's" chocolate chip cookie recipe. The recipe always comes with a
story about how somebody got bilked out of a lot of money paying for the
recipe and is now widely circulating it in retaliation. THIS STORY IS NOT
TRUE - IT IS AN URBAN LEGEND.
In any event, the cookie recipe (which is quite good, actually) has been
posted in this conference too many times for us to remember already. It is
in note 245. WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE COPIES OF IT IN THIS CONFERENCE. PLEASE
DON'T POST IT AGAIN.

1.14 | keyword creation is restricted | TLE::WINALSKI | Careful with that VAX, Eugene | Thu Jan 30 1992 17:13 | 9 |
| Danielle Hache has done a bang-up job of putting this conference into some
semblence of organization. Now that most of the major topics have been
coalesced, we're ready to tackle putting the keywords in order. To help in
the reorganization of the keywords, new keyword creation has been restricted.
You can apply existing keywords to notes, but you can't create any new
keywords. If you feel that a new keyword is needed, please contact the
moderators and we'll add it for you.

1.15 | | TIMBER::HACHE | Nuptial Halfway House | Thu Jun 25 1992 09:48 | 15 |
| I just wanted to write a quick note to all the COOKS out there
who have been patient and encouraging to me while I've been out
on disability. It didn't impact COOKS to much until they cut
the phone lines into my system and I couldn't log in from home.
I am especially encouraged that after two months of not logging
in, COOKS still looks pretty great. (I did kind of expect the
worst). In a few weeks my group moves to PKO where the phone
lines work, so I can log in from home again. I'm in my office
(for the time being) on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you need me for
anything.
Thanks again!

1.17 | farewell, almost | NOVA::FISHER | I suppose I'm analog now. | Thu Dec 01 1994 06:23 | 16 |
| I'd like to welcome Mike Wolinski as new co moderator of COOKS.
He's been doing the directories and a few other things for a while
now. I'd like to thank Paul Winalski for letting me help out as
comoderator for a while and try to keep up the organization
set up by Danielle Hache. Apparently Danielle is not returning
from her long term disability.
Since I am no longer a Digital employee -- merely one of those 'other
persons' with legitimate access to the enet for a while longer --
it would be inapproriate for me to continue to act as comoderator.
Thus I am removing myself from the list of moderators.
Meanwhile, I have a couple of zinger Vidalia recipes I've been meaning
to enter before I lose access entirely.
