1956.0. "Hands from the Portsmouth sectional" by SUBSYS::SENGUPTA (Shekhar Sengupta DTN 237-6785) Tue Apr 15 1997 17:39

    Although the event happened ten days ago, a couple of hands from the
    Portsmouth Sectional (4/4 and 4/5) are still worth mentioning. Since
    the tournament venue was a brewery, they served beer during the game.
    Remembering how I used to enjoy playing chess in the back rooms of
    public houses in Germany (where all chess clubs meet) I decided to
    order a beer before the afternoon game.

    After imbibing half a glass I realized that age and lack of practice
    had dulled my once keen ability to drink and concentrate. It was all
    I could do to follow suit and any good boards we had, were attributable
    to luck and partner's fine play. We ended up with a 53% game behind
    BB and DB. Unfortunately, sobriety did not help our cause in the
    evening and we did not get into the overalls, whereas the Brauchers did.

    Here are the hands:

    Hand 1
    ======
    Board 7: Afternoon session
    Both Vul: As dealer, what do you bid with T83-AKQ76-JT64-Q ?

    Hand 2
    ======
    Board 5: Evening session
    non-Vul against Vul: You hold: AQJ763-KT97-98-T
    What do you bid after LHO opens 1C and partner and RHO pass?

    The team game on Sunday was more fun. In my second attempt at Flight A
    competition, we came fourth after blitzing a team comprising Paul
    Kinney, Sheila Gabay, Mel Marcus and Shome Mukherjee but losing to JK's
    team after I let Jay make a hopeless 3NT when I had three chances
    to lead the suit (Spades) that would have set him. Luckily I didn't
    have a gun or I would have shot myself. The most memorable hand was:

    Hand 3
    ======
    xxx-void-KQJ-JT9xxxx

    With both non-vul, it goes (You)Pass-(LHO)Pass-(Partner)1C-(RHO)1S-(You)?

    At the table I bid 2S. This got everyone all excited for some reason
    and the bidding followed with 4S on my left, 6C(!) by partner leaving
    me regretting that I didn't bid 5C on my first turn, 6S on my right.
    What would you have done in my position?

	Let's see, 7 losers, 2 QT, 21 on Bergen's rule-of-20, easy rebid.
	What's wrong with 1H?

	1S. Can't double and bid 1S over 1D as that would be very strong.
	Can't bid 2S since that would also be strong (Not as much as X)

	5C looks pretty tempting. I want to get the auction above 4H/4S
	right away. 2S is okay, I guess, but leaves the opps too much room.

1956.2Pass 6S (smoothly)...GAAS::BRAUCHERAnd nothing else mattersWed Apr 16 1997 09:0816
  I agree on the first two : I open 1H and overcall 1S. There may be
 creative opportunities later. For now, I'm with the field.

  The wild club hand is another matter !! 5C a la Miller is certainly
 a possibility. Your 2S is a limit raise, with 3C preemptive ? It would
 have been interesting if 3H were a passed hand splinter, but that would
 be unwise without discussion.

  I'm passing 6S, as partner could make 7C if he bids it, but I'll leave
 in his double. I suspect I'll never get my heart ruff !

  If've already hesitated too much to pass 6S honorably, I have a very
 nasty guess.

    1) 1H
    2) X, showing > 1 suit. If pard bids D, I'll convert to S. Thus he'll
       know I have S-H, S being longer.
    3) I'd open 3C. 5C/1S is mandatory. Now X/6S and (if left there) lead
       DJ. Hopefully pard has DA to take and switch to H (when dummy
       hits with, say, 5 hearts).

Thank you for your comments. At the table, a decision not to open 1H
with Hand 1 led to the opponents buying the hand in Clubs and giving us
a bottom.

On hand 2 a double by the hand in question was followed by the opponents
bidding 3NT, and Spades never being mentioned. This led to a poor opening
lead by doubler's partner, followed by a confused defense, allowing opponents
to make an unmakeable 3NT.

Hand 3 was the most fun. My hand had one fewer club and one more diamond
than originally stated:

		xxx-void-KQJx-JT9xxx
Partner  had:	x-Axxx-Ax-AKQxxx

My bid was:

Did you guess? 7C. My RHO, certain that one of us had a Spade void, decided
to lead HK ...
