1946.0. "One that shouldn't have got away" by SUBSYS::SENGUPTA (Shekhar Sengupta DTN 237-6785) Fri Mar 07 1997 11:02

Here's a hand from last night, in which I found the only way to go down
after a favorable lead. I was the dealer, with our side vul. Playing
Blue Team Club (strong club, 4 card majors) I open 1H in the South seat

	S KQ5
	H AQT8
	D T7542
	C 8

The bidding proceeds:

South West	North	East
1H	P	2C(1)	Dbl	(1) Could be as short as 2 in preparation
P	2S	6H	Dbl for a game forcing reverse by responder
AP

West leads a spade and I breathe a sigh of relief as dummy hits with:

	S A
	H KJ752
	D QJ2
	C AQ97

Now what?

I don't think anybody has 7 or more spades. So I start SA, H10, SKQ
pitching diamonds, DQ to them. Obviously, unless trumps 4-0 I'm cold then
if diamonds are 3-2. On a club return, I would have to refuse the
finesse. Even if diamonds are 4-1, I'm OK if the club king is tripleton.

The main point is that your chances are worse drawing trumps immediately.

SA, CA, C-ruff, S-KQ pitching diamonds. Exit with DQ and see what
opps do. I'm not sure how many club ruffs I need, as I may need
to play this as a dummy reversal. So I don't draw any trump.

You have 3 spade tricks, 1 club, and 5 hearts in hand. If you plan
to ruff clubs for the extra 3 tricks you need 3 club ruffs in dummy
and you must cross-ruff to get the necessary entries. The problem
is West is threatening to overruff a diamond. West didn't lead a
diamond, so let's assume they split 3-2. The cross-ruff line won't
work unless East has the singleton 9S because West will overruff.

At first glance I was inclined to agree with DM, but after this
analysis, I agree with bb.

All of you who chose not to draw 2 rounds of trumps made the slam
(sigh!). The only excuse I have, for not finding the right line was
that the director was breathing down my neck to finish the hand. Once
I drew 2 rounds of trumps, I was doomed when the Diamonds did
not break. Could someone educate me about the probability of
finding singletons in the other two hands, once you and
partner both have singletons?
