1937.0. "Big Bad Swing" by BULMER::KABLESHKOV () Thu Feb 27 1997 09:59

IMPs, game all. Playing 12-14 NT, 4CM. Your deal, no interference,

    You KQx-AJx-AKTx-Jxx 1D 2H* 3S 4S
    Pard JTxx-KQx-Qxxx-xx 1S 3H 4H** AP

    * after deliberation, in preference of 2N (which implies C stop)
    ** would prefer 4D

Goes down. On other tables 3N makes(!?) on H lead (presumably after
1D-1S-2N-3N). Still, C are 4-4 and there's SA to lose (probably
    held-up twice!)

How would you bid this hand?

Very hard, both games are nearly hopeless against good defense
(against 4S, 3 rounds clubs, duck twice with S-Axx.)

There's something to be said for passing 2NT, or 3S in the other auction,
but I'd be overbid to game also. Point count excuse.

1937.2I'd probably be in 3NDAVIDB::DMILLERThis bug fix broke what???????Thu Feb 27 1997 11:1910
I'd probably rebid 2N with the big hand. Who cares about a minor
stopper in NT anyways? 8^) Maybe partner will have it.

Ah, 3N with a heart lead. Win on board and lead a spade. If RHO
has SA, he may hold up, or try to clear the heart suit. If LHO has
SA, he may think partner is holding HA over remaining honor and lead
them again. Club honors must be split and neither one want to lead
	them.

I'd rather bid 2NT missing 1/2 a club stopper than bid 2H missing
a 4th heart.

The only way to stop short of game playing Standard American would be
if I decided to discount my CJ and opened 1N. If partner passes, we'll
play 1N. If he invites, we're again looking at 3N.

Playing a strong club system, I don't think there is any way of stopping
short of game unless you peek at the opponents' cards.

Most of the time I would open 1N, and let partner place the
contract, accepting any invitations. I'd really rather not be
the captain of the auction with this kind of hand. At MP, this
is almost a 100% action for me.

Playing with Dave, I would open this 1D and jump rebid 2N over 1H or 1S.
We have a very good system after that sequence which will get us to the
right strain and level. In this case, we'd be in 3N, taking our chances,
given that I stretched a little and should've discounted the club J
and flat hand. I'd rather take the chance on the club stopper than
miss a game if pard has a 5 card major or some clubs+points for game,
at IMPs.

Sorry, but a 2H rebid totally distorts the picture, I can't buy that.
