1927.0. "didn't do well in Hudson..." by GAAS::BRAUCHER (Champagne Supernova) Mon Feb 10 1997 11:10

  Congrats to Miller-Stiles, who beat me in the last round of Sunday's
 Swiss in Hudson. Most of the action occurred at the other table. One
 sequence of interest was this both vul, S dealt (tell if I misremember) :

                  xxx x QJx KQJxxx                    1D 2D 2S 4S by me
          Qxxxx KJxxx xx x     AKJx Qxx xxxx xx       5C P  P  P
                  x Axxx AKxx Axxx making 6, push

  I'm not sure if slam is reachable with the interference. How do people
 treat the 2H-2S-3C-3D bids over Michaels ?

1927.14S bid really cramped the auctionDAVIDB::DMILLERThis bug fix broke what???????Mon Feb 10 1997 12:4631
	Close Bill, my hand was x-ATxx-AKxxx-Axx (One more D, one less C)

	Our agreements said 2H and 2S were "invisible cuebids" over the
	2D (Michaels) call. I had forgotten which was which, but they
	are supposed to be:

		2H (Lowest cuebid) - Support for partner, 10+ pts
		2S (Higher cuebid) - Shows length in 4th suit, 10+ pts

	We have some disagreement on whether 3C in this auction should be
	forcing or non-forcing. I think it should be a weak hand with
	nothing but clubs. Partner thinks it should still be forcing,
	which is our current agreement after a previous misunderstanding,
	when I thought partner could cue first and raise later to show
	extra strength. (I passed 3C making 5, if I recall) 3D is just
	a competitive bid.

	The big question is, what do I do over 4S? I know partner's
	cards are probably working. But does he have wasted or extra
	heart length that could hurt us?

	It seems my choices were an undiscussed 4N, 5C, or a 5H cuebid
	that would commit us to slam. I suppose 5N (Pick a minor slam)
	could also be a choice - but I hope it's not misconstrued as GSF
	in clubs! 4N might be interesting to have as an agreement as
	"quantitative pick". Partner could then see the double-fit and
	may try 6C.

	Opinions greatly appreciated,

1927.2In my opinion...CADSYS::GROSSThe bug stops hereMon Feb 10 1997 13:599
The hand with first round control of 3 suits and second round control of the 4th
suit has to make a move towards slam. Partner may well have a hand suitable for
slam, yet make no move because of ZERO first-round controls.

The problem here is the only bid between 5C and where we are (4S) is 4NT, and
I'm not sure how that would be interpreted. Since the opponents want to preempt
me out of something, I'd be delighted to bid 6C and see if they want to save.

1927.3Pick a slamCSLALL::16.29.16.112::JKeenanJay Keenan (603) 883-7913Mon Feb 10 1997 14:087
My call at the bar, before ingestion of too many beers, was 5H over
4S. Commits to slam, leaves choice of minors and shows the HA on the
way by. I know slam may be hopeless, but 7 may be ice and partner
would have to pass 5C. Just too prime a hand to bid 5C. Besides, even
if we can't make 6, the opponents may not know it.

1927.4with interference, it's a shootout anyway...STAR::STILESWhen in doubt, hack.Mon Feb 10 1997 16:0411
I like Jay's 5H bid.

My hand (North) had both minor tens, as well:

xxx-x-QJT-KQJTxx	May have even had the 9 of clubs --
			it was good enough with the diamond tolerance
			and singleton to venture the 2S bid.

But it can't possibly go looking for slam without a clue from partner...

  By the way, I never heard. What was our teammates ineffective auction ?

	Don't know.  Probably 1D-2D-3C-4S-5C.

	I think it's the double fit that makes this such as nice slam. So
	the only way to find it would be if 4N was some sort of quantitative
	bid showing club support and extra diamond length.
