A funny misunderstanding arose recently. MP, love all, no opps interference. Playing Benj Acol (no 2/1 GF), pard dealer: Pard x-KQTxxx-AQJxx-x 1H 3D 6H** You Qxx-x-x-AKQJTxxx 3C* 3N P * Just GF. In US it's easy: 2C. Here I can do likewise, but 3C has also a preemptive element against S/D. ** Pard misread my sign-off, and decided I had H support and 2 aces. -3 for a poor score. 3N makes as SAK and HA are with LHO. 5C goes down.

Well, probably not such a misunderstanding as just overbidding with no fit. The playing strength is there, but the hands don't work for each other. I don't like 6H - I'd bid 4D. And, as you know, nobody in America would see the point of 3C, after which 5C is pretty inevitable. Actually, if I were so scared of the opponents, I'd rather respond 5C, which at least gets the message across clearly. But I'd settle for 2C. bb | |||||

It was MP that did it. In IMPs, 5C is fine. As I have a gambling 3N opening, I was contemplating that bid after the likely 3D/3C. 2C leads to opps interfering and going for 4S -1 (happened at another table). Well, there are far more hands than there are bids to describe them. |
