1921.1 | Not much to say | DAVIDB::DMILLER | This bug fix broke what??????? | Tue Jan 28 1997 17:32 | 20 |
| It's certainly not scientific, but it's a decent gamble. If opener
has both major Aces, you'd like to give it a shot. You ought to be
able to find it by cuebidding too:
1H-1S-3S-4C-4H-
At this point, if your style is Aces-first, you can go RKCB and find
another keycard in addition to the HA. Since partner didn't cue 4D,
it must be both major aces and slam is likely.
I almost think opener's hand is too good for just 3S. I might have
splintered into 4C. 1H-1S-4C-4D-4H- gets you to the same point.
If you don't like RKCB with a void, bid 5N after the 4H cuebid and
find partner with the SA.
A spade lead and 5-2 club split might have made the play interesting,
but other than that, it looks pretty boring.

| Well done. Here the preferred sequences are:
(a) Convoluted
1H - 1S
3S - 4C* * cue
4H* - 5D* ** GSF
5N** - 7S
(b) Direct
1H - 2S thanks to 8-9 PT and 6 spades (preemptive too)
4C* - 4D*
5N** - 7S

It's a fair gamble, as a heart lead without the ace won't happen,
and even with the ace, would make anybody nervous !
3S is actually an underbid to me - I'd rather splinter, not that
this sort of close evaluation matters much to West, with his 6-6.
Blackwood isn't much good to either player unless exclusion. While
I like cuebidding generally, it may get confusing on this deal, as
multiple players have multiple controls in multiple suits !
As always, the grand must have been well above average.

1921.4 | (from Craig Zastera) | MOIRA::FAIMAN | Wandrer, du Mder, du bist zu Haus | Wed Jan 29 1997 14:18 | 15 |
| The auction I like is:
1H 1S
4C (1) 5D (2)
5N (3) 7S
1. splinter, promising 4 spades and < 2 clubs
2. Exclusion RKCB 3. 2 without SQ
First point is that I think East is too good for 3S only. Maybe without
the DT that bid would appeal more.
Second, a more chicken west might try only 6D (exclusion king ask) to
inform partner that all primary controls are held and invite him to bid
the grand with a trick source (e.g. good hearts). But as it is, the
grand has reasonable play even though east has about as unsuitable hand
as possible given his previous bidding, so I think the jump to 7 by west
is justied. Should make on the actual lie (just ruff 3 clubs).
