| Does anybody know anything about a 'boycott' of soy products? I'm
unable to verify what the real issue is. I've only seen bits and pieces
of mostly opinions, something to do with genetically engineered soy
beans? Not sure if it will damage supply lines of soy products or not.
If anyone can shed some light, I'd appreciate it. I depend on soy
products, and my son can only drink soy beverages.

| Sarah,
Don't know where you are located so can't say anything about a boycott as that would be a local or
national thing depending on your location.
As for genetically engineered soy beans - one of the BIG US chemical companies has come up with a
genetically modified soy bean that can withstand unlimited use of a pesticide that coincidentally the same
company manufacture.
The problem arises because the company have said that they will be mixing this genetically modified bean
in with standard beans and WILL NOT differentiate whether the purchaser likes it or not.
So many non US companies that use soy beans in their products have decided to boycott US soy as a result
of this.
The only way you can guarantee that the products you buy containing soy (and they are wide and varied,
much more than the obvious soy milks, yogurts etc) do not contain this genetically engineered bean is to
buy products with only organically grown soy in it.
So there won't be a problem about soy not being available but you may wish to decide what soy products
you buy or not.
Martin
PS: there is another recent "scare" story involving soy, namely that it contains phytoestrogens which can
behave like human hormones and that children consuming large amounts of soy can have problems
because of this (possible problems include "feminisation" of boys and early onset of puberty for girls).
The status of this research is dubious at best at present and there is plenty of living evidence that this
doesn't happen (Asian cultures for example consume lots of soy but don't seem to have problems, lots of
healthy life long vegans etc.) so I wouldn't worry overly about this one.
