    Saw only short highlights of Bayern Munchen - Girondins Bordeaux  2:0
    
    One goal each half for the Bayern, by Helmer and Scholl.
    Bordeaux however had 3 enormous chances stupidly missed.
    Worth to mention that Bordeaux had to cope with numerous absences, in 
    particular the 2 players who blew up Milan, the internationals Zidane 
    (elected Player of the Year) and Dugarry (2 goals versus Milan).
    In fact, Zidane was suspended due to a yellow card got in Intertoto,
    which (to be fair) should not have been applied at this stage.
    
    Second leg: I don't see Bordeaux reediting the Milan match, as the 
    main strength of Bayern this year is the capacity to win away matches.

    	Mike - assuming that you receive ESPN in "the Great White North",
    	you should be able to see the Ajax - Juventus game which will
    	probably be shown live (as was the case for the Ajax - AC Milano
    	game last year).  Without having any programming info, that would
    	suggest a 2:35 P.M. (EDT - GMT-5) start time.  By the way, all of
    	the Champions League games for the last few monthes have been shown on 
    	ESPN or ESPN2, but there isn't too much advance notice - the Boston
    	Globe gives the TV listing *only* on the day that game is played
    	(either live or on a tape delay of a few hours at some ridiculous 
    	time like 12:30 A.M.)  Actually a 2:35 P.M. start would be good for 
    	us in the Boston area - that leaves just enough time to watch the game
    	and get over to Foxboro for the Fiorentina - New England Revolution
    	friendly, also on May 22.
    
    	My Brazilian friends tell me that the Brazil - Argentina game next
    	Sunday afternoon (May 5) will be shown live on ESPN as well.  Anyone
    	have any broadcast info for us western hemispheric types for the
    	May 11 Liverpool - Man United match?

    there's a web page put together by Oliver Tse that lists every game on
    TV and satellite that you need to read

    it gets updated daily and doesn't list Brazil v argentina.
        
    Liverpool v Mancs will be on at 10am EDT and only on satellite tv in 
    Boston the following bars are advertsiing the game
    
    blackthorn, irish embassy, (might be THE irish embassy?), kells
    
    also bars in brighton, cambridge, nantucket.
    
    ESPN will show Ajax v Juventus on May 22 at 2.25pm EDT - for the other
    european finals you need satellite.

Paris has been the better team in the first halftime, Rapid a little bit

No, it was no good match. Rapid's worst game in this EC season and
no good one of Paris (replies in note French and Austrian football) .

    Bayern won the EUFA cup last night and became only the 4th team to
    have won all 3 european trophys.
    Bayern beat Bordeux (sp) 3-1 in France to win 5-1 overall, typical
    Bayern they defend well and catch their opponents with counter
    attacks, having held on 0-0 at half time with some very poor finishing
    from the French Bayern struck 3 times with goals from Scholl,
    Kosdadinov (sp) and that man Klinsman before the French replied with
    a goal from their substitute.

      How many French players were scythed down on the edge of the area in
    the 1st half? That was not defending well from my view, more thuggery
    going unpunished by the ref (he was a bit poor IMHO). Mind you, how
    many of the huge number of free kicks the French got troubled the
    keeper. Approximately none! They did hit the post as well before they
    scored though.
    
    Bit of a turnaround in the 2nd half with Bayern taking the chances when 
    they came. Klinnsman was definately the scorer of the 3rd.  
    
    Overall I think 5-1 implies a major hammering which over the two legs
    is a little unfair.

    Exactly what I thought! What stunned me even more than the refereeing
    was the way the Bordeaux players accepted the decisions! The tackle
    that resulted in their skipper getting stretchered off was 100%
    diabolical, and there were several other bad tackles from behind on
    Dugarry and Zidane. But the players seemed to accept it and get on with
    the game. Sad to say, but I'm beginning to understand why French clubs
    never seem to punch their weight (no pun intended!) in terms of winning
    Euro trophies...
    
    Incidentally, Dugarry and Zidane looked red hot (at least in flashes).
    I can't believe that, like Cantona and Ginola, they're not regulars in
    the French national team.
    
    Helluva crowd too. They cheered the team on right to the end, even
    though it was odds on after the first Bayern goal that they'd never be
    able to pull the game round. Certainly a 5-1 aggregate score was a bit
    flattering for Bayern.

    I must agree and say that Dugarry had an excellent game. He was superb
    on the ball and Helmer for one was lucky to stay on the park !! What is
    the starting line-up of the French then if they can leave out Cantona,
    Ginola, Dugarry and Zidane ???

    ...and (if I'm not mistaken) they've gone 25+ matches without defeat.

    I believe the current best unbeaten string is the Turks at 16 or 17.

    I 100% share your views about the bad behaviour of some Bayern players,
    in particular Kostadinov, who did'not get even a free kick !
    About the lack of rection from the Franch players: well, you certainly
    have noticed that when they begin to react, they actually get cards.
    The 2 first yellow came to Bordeaux's players, which was a real
    nonsence. And by the way, by the past, the French problem was the
    contrary: lack of self control after an agression --> cards --> sending
    off ! This happended by the way before the first match, where Zidane
    and Dugarry were missing due to cards.
    
    I believe you also noticed the Sforza voluntary hand in the area to stop 
    a free kick at the beginning of the second half (shown several times at
    the TV), without obviously no reaction from the referee...
    
    Zidane is now on considered as the best player in France, elected
    player of the year, and selected in the 22 for the Euro. 
    About this match, he was not at the level of play he is used to offer..
    
    By the way, the Paris and Bordeaux's good European season had a very
    bad side effect: the French Clubs have been litterally looted from
    their best players...
    
    Zidane is announced to leave Bordeaux to Italy (club not yet known)
    Dugarry is leaving too (dunno where)
    Djorkaeff signed for the Inter
    Thuram signed for Parma
    Laurent Blanc signed for Barcelona
    Ipoua (young striker from Nice) is going to Inter
    Bravo goes to Parma

    Ajax did not perform to the level they were expected although had
    the highest possesion of the ball.
    Juventus did show offensive skills and i think they deserved the
    tropy.But being an Ajax fun i was disappointed.

    
    The game did'nt quite live upto the hype but then again 
    these games very seldom do.
    
    What I was surprised about was the standard of the final ball
    especially from Ajax and the penalties... very poor.
    
    Ajax must have been watching Chris Waddles video on "How to 
    take a Penalty and really p*ss off 56 million people 
    back home".. during the previous week.

    Yes the penalties were very poor by Ajax, the commitment was none
    existant. I did feel a bit sorry for van der Saar as he really tried
    his best. He almost saved a couple of the well taken Juve kicks.

I really enjoyed the game, especially the first half, when Juve were rampant. 
They'd obviously decided they weren't going to let Ajax get settled.

Two 'keeping mistakes, with 2 class finishes for the goals, and probably the 
'correct' thing to have happened would have been for Del Piero to have scored 
in the last minute, as Juve just deserved the win overall (they created far 
more chances)

    If the Juve keeper had not parried the ball when he could have caught
    it the game would not have gone to extra time. 
    
    Overall I enjoyed the game very much. How Ravenelli sueezed the ball in 
    from that angle I do not know! As a final it beat the pants off the FA 
    final over here. I was expecting a 1 - 0 game with lots of (boring)    
    defensive play. I was pleasently surprised!

    Hi All,
    
    I too watched the game here in Canada on TSN, and as an Ajax fan, was
    dissapointed that the desire to win was lacking, although posession
    seemed to be on Ajax's side. The miscommunication between keeper and
    defenceman was fatal for Ajax on the Juve goal. Other than that, I
    think Van der Sar is a true International, highly skilled keeper. He
    took away a lot of chances from Juve. I always hated shootouts in any
    sport, because the right team does not always win, In this case
    however, Juve deserved the win simply because they showed more heart
    and determination.
    
    This is my last entry in the NOTES file as I am leaving DEC for good.
    (thank god for Internet) So to all you Ajax/football fans out there:
