539.0. "The greatest matches of all time?..." by IRNBRU::HOWARD (Lovely Day for a Guinness) Fri Jan 26 1996 11:26

There is a brilliant section in the latest `Four-Four-Two' magazine called `The
100 greatest matches of all time'. They polled football experts on their 3
favourite matches and the Real Madrid-Eintracht Frankfurt European Cup Final at
Hampden Park, (7-3 to Real), in 1961(?) came out on top. How's about our own
poll? My most memorable matches of all time are....

France 2-1 Portugal 1984 European Championships semi-final

The most exciting match probably of all-time. France, inspired by
Platini-Giresse-Tigana, won this match almost by will-power as much as by
skill....

Liverpool 4-4 Everton 1991 FA Cup 3rd or 4th round, (I can't remember which
round..)

A wild and wonderful match which I'm sure Liverpool still can't understand how
they didn't win....

Leeds 4-5 Liverpool 1990(?) 1st Division

Liverpool were 4-0 up within a half-hour and had played absolutely supreme
football, John Barnes was a genius on that day. Leeds couldn't touch the ball
but Gordon Strachan inspired them to an almost unbelievable comeback in the
second half but Liverpool managed to hang on....

There are other matches which could be mentioned, such as Ireland 1-0 Italy in
the '94 WC, Ireland 1-0 England EC88, Arsenal 3-2 ManU 1979 FA Cup final or
Spurs 2-1 ManCity Cup Final replay 1981, even this season's Rangers-Celtic 3-3
draw. All great matches but the first three matches stand out in my memory....

Dunno about of all time but....

Liverpool 3 Palace 4 in the FA Cup Semi

Palace 3 Man U 3 in the Final.

Utd's semi with Oldham that season was pretty good too.

For edge of the seat stuff the two games for Palace were amazing, especially
given that it was the same season that Looneypool did us 9-0!

Re .0

I remember the Liverpool-Leeds game very well indeed.
Chapman had a goal disallowed when it was 4-1 or 4-2.
The ref. didn't play much extra time either, to give
Leeds a chance to snatch what would have been an
incredible draw.

Anyone remember the 5-5 draw about 13 years ago between
Coventry and Tottenham?

Chelsea beating Leeds in the 1970 Cup Final replay, however
the most exciting game I've been too is...

about 1985/6 Reading losing at home 3-0 to Plymouth with about
25 mins to go and Reading win 4-3..

That is what footy is all about....

Re -1

Which also reminds me that I was ejected from my
own home when Arsenal got the second goal; I couldn't
contain my jubilation at the Arse putting one over on
the Red Scouse.

This was nothing to what happened to Mick Dunphy on
that Fateful Night. How about the story Mick?

Well james,

As I remember, I could really believe we did it, It was like an earthquake hit
the house!!!

As for my brother Nick, He was in the college bar sitting in a big group of
mainly pool supporters. When thomas scored...drinks, tables, bodies went flying
as he jumped around the place..

A memory worth recalling 8^)

Probably the France-West Germany match in the 1982 World Cup. If
ever a goalkeeper deserved to be sent off, it was then !!

If not that one, then the match between Scotland and Brazil in the same
tournament. Scotland 1-0 up at half-time through a cracking goal by
David Narey, then Alan Rough suddenly remembers that he's a Scottish
keeper and keeps his feet rooted to the spot for the whole of the
second half. Brazil won 4-1 !! (I can still see Roughies bubble-perm
being the only thing that moved as Zico scored his first !!)

Another one in the list was 1960 European Cup Final Real Madrid 7
    Frankfurt 3.

Seems that this subject is a media 'fave' as Time Out this week lists
its 10 great footie matches, 5 great footie moments and 5 'bad' footie
moments. Arsenal feature in all 3 categories, Anfield 1989, Nayim last
season and the 'Battle of Old Trafford' (more commonly referred to as
handbags at 5 paces) in that particular order.

    Noters,

I remember the last game of the season 1976 , I listerned to it on
my trany as it was live on radio 2. How things have changed. Livepool
were 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go against Wolves at Moleneux. Wolves
needed to win to stay in the 1st and Liverpool needed to win it to
claim the league title....we won 3-1 went on to win The European and
become the dominant team in Europe during the late 70's and early 80's.

    others to consider...

Scotland 3 Holland 2 1978 Wold cup (Gemmils goal)

    Any game Cryuff played in

Brazil v England Mexico 1970 Banks save, Pele goals.

>>France 2-1 Portugal 1984 European Championships semi-final

In fact, the final score was 3-2 after extra-time with Portugal
leading 2-1 six minutes from the end.

    I'll add to your list:

    * 1986 - France/Brasil WC 1/4 final. Couldn't stand that penalty
    shoot-out...

    * All Saint Etienne European ties in the late 70s/early 80s. I remember
the '76 semi-final when St Etienne won 5-1 against Dynamo Kiev after
extra-time having lost 4-1 in Ukraine two weeks before.

Brazil v France, Mexico 86. Platini and France ending a brilliant era.
They should have made it to the final.

Liverpool v Forest, 87 or 88. One of the most overwhelming victories
I have ever seen. I think it was 5-0 to Liverpool.

Belgium v Russia, Mexico 86. Think there was a least seven goals in
    a see-saw of a match.

Arsenal v Norwich, 1989. This had everything, Perry Groves (!!),
coming back from 2-0 down at half-time to win 4-3 and a massive
    fight at the end. Brilliant.

Tottenham 0 Arsenal 5, 1978(?). That Brady goal.

Liverpool 7 Tottenham 0, 1978. Need I say more. Total humiliation,

    Barry.

Possibly not quite in the same league as other matches mentioned but
the best game I've ever seen was at St Andrews 3-4 years ago. My
beloved Swindon were 4-1 down after 70 minutes and the played the best
20 minutes I have ever seen eventually coming out 6-4 on top. Maskell
scored a couple of gems, Dave Mitchell scored a hattrick and Bodin
got one. Absolutely incredible. I have never seen a home crowd panic as
much as when the Town began their comeback.

Eurpean cup tie 1967.

I was at the match but I was 3 and can't remeber it very well but I've heard the
tale from my dad so many times I know the game inside out - yoy can also get the
highlights from the match on video. Anyway....................................

Killie were down 3-0 from the first leg in Frankfurt. With only minutes on the
clock of the second leg Eintracht scored to go 4-0 on aggregate. With the away
goal rule this meant Killie had to score 5 to win the tie. Killie got back into
the match with some outstanding play and managed to get the score to 4-1 on the
night with only minutes left. Rumour has it that Ross Mathie asked the ref how
long was left and the ref replied "long enough to get the winner" which we
promtly did. The next round we drew Coleraine away and drew 0-0 , came back to
Rugby Park with the whole town expecting to get to the semi-final of the cup and
got beat 1-0.

The France/Brazil match in the 1986 world cup was a superb game. With seconds to
go the French broke through only for the Brazil keeper to come out the box and
almost half the poor attacker. The keeper got booked and France failed to score
from the free kick. In the end justice was down. This is the only time my
sister EVER took interest in a match and even she was screaming at the TV.

So many of Liverpool's games over the past 25 years have been
