538.1 | Brighton must be Top 20 with their striped shirts AND shorts... | VARESE::TRNUX1::IDC_BSTR | Oh no! NOT Milan Kundera again! | Wed Jan 24 1996 14:36 | 9 |
| re. -1
I can only imagine that the number of stripes that a team has on its
shirts must be worth bonus points ;-)
If Ajax aren't the best team in the world at the moment, then I'm a
Dutchman. (There must be a good pun there, but I'm damned if I can see
it!)

| Does anyone know how these rankings are founded. Is it purely on
domestic football or on international competitions. If it is one
domestic football I can see why Ajax are down so far. The general
standard of the Dutch league in comaprison to Ajax is poor, only PSV
and Feyenoord being close to them. Porto's inclusion surprises me as
the Portuguese league is pretty poor except for the few larger clubs.
Where are clubs like Spartak Moscow, who dominate their home league and
do well in European competitions as well?

| So Barcelona have gone up from 4th to 1st at the end of a season when they
didn't win anything? These statistics are going to command a lot of respect I
don't think.

It's getting to the stage where we just have a good laugh every month
when these stats come out. Maybe we should run a competition: who can
come up with the algorithm that UEFA (?) used to generate the table in
.8? The table for national teams is just as laughable; I believe Sweden
are still in the top 5, and they didn't even qualify for EC96 ;-)
