In '97 we've got 6 teams playing each other twice for WC qualifying
from CONCACAF- Jamaica, Costa Rica, Canada, Mexico, US, and El
Salvador.
Yesterday we watched the US skunk Canada 3-0 in Palo Alto- scoring two
goals in the first 7 minutes and a final in the 89th. Ernie Stewart,
who scored the last, has been carded twice now and will sit out next
week's qualifier in Costa Rica. Stanford Stadium had ~28K people
watching the game- we rode the train, arriving an hour before the game.
SJ Clash, of MLS, were 'presenting' the match, and had Clash players
all around the stadium signing autographs on the approaches for an hour
before the game. We got to meet Dominic Kinnear, a new acquisition
from Colorado, slated for our midfield.
Standings so far in this round-
1. Mexico, 1-0-1
2. US, 1-0-1
3. Costa Rica 0-0-1
3. Jamaica 0-0-1
5. El Salvador
6. Canada 0-2-0

| US came from behind twice yesterday to tie Mexico 2-2 at a sold-out
Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts (~55,000 fans present!)
Kasey Keller committed a freak error in the first minute, getting a
pass back from one of his defenders and failing to clear it in time-
his clearance was headed back down by a leaping Hermosilla, bouncing
past Keller into the net in the 39th second of play, and we're down
1-0. But the game wasn't over- Reyna, fouled in the 34th minute, on the
restart had his shot headed nearly clear by Galindo, but Wynalda headed
it back in and Eddie Pope put it away in the 35th.
In the 54th Galindo got it back, feeding Hernandez a great ball through
the US defenses; Keller was alone and charging but Hernandez placed an
excellent chip shot past him. 15 minutes later Hernandez was sent off
for tackling Lalas from behind. A man up but a goal down, the US had
over 20 minutes to equalize and with high pressure forced an own goal
upon Mexico, when Dooley barely got to a Stewart cross and deflected it
enough that Ramirez, set to head it back to his own keeper, misjudged
the deflected ball and put it across his keeper inside the far post in
the 74th minute. Tied 2-2, despite all the further effort and good
chances on both sides.
Sampson put in two of the Amis, players with American citizenship raised
in Europe, Mason and David Wagner, in the last 15 minutes or so (one of
the other Amis, Dooley, came out, as did Lalas) and they made some
immediate fast offensive chances, including a goal-bound header by
Harkes saved at the line by a defensive header from Joaquin Del Almo in
the 89th minute.
US moves into second place in this round with five points in 4 games,
behind Mexico, with eight points in four games. Costa Rica is third
with four points in 2 games, while Jamaica, El Salvador, and Canada
have 1 point each.
