| carlos,
is there a reason why they have abandoned the two group system that
had been used in previous world cups? how many games would a qualifier
have to play versus how many they played in say qualifying for 1994?
I read somewhere that the US (in CONACAF) would play 20 games in
qualifying versus the 12 they played in getting in 1990 (of course
in 94 they were hosts) so i'm wondering what the logic is here since
it's not like in Europe where 20 new countries have suddenly
appeared...

| My understanding is that all 9 countries had a hard time agreeing what
will be the best way for the qualifier, they all had different opinions
and objections. The only opinion that everyone finally agreed was to
have eveyone play each other starting on April of 1996 and ending in
November of 1997.
Some of difficulties that they were facing was scheduling the
qualifiers. It use to be done during the months of June thru August but
it has caused many problems, specially in the last qualifer for the '94
World Cup. There were other tournaments that was getting hard to
schedule (e.g. Copa America, Copa Libertadores). Also, trying to get
players that play in Europe was getting to be more difficult. There
was contants problems with European clubs to release players.
With new format and new schedule, it almost coincide with European
qualifiers (and tournaments) where players can return and play with
their respective countries. Also, it makes it easy for them to
schedule other major tournament in South America.
Also, according to the President of CSF, he find it exciting where
everyone will play each other and the top four quailify.

| Oh yeah, as to CONCACAF, a lot of countries from Central America have
made major complains that it does not seem fair that certain countries
get byes in the early rounds (E.g. USA and Mexico) while others have to
play at least 8-12 games. Some of them felt that with all those games,
they felt somewhat tire by the time they play other teams that get a
bye (specially players that play abroad).
A good example that has been used is El Salvador in the past qualifer.
That team ended playing over 20 games while USA and Mexico about 12
games. El Salvador did have a good team but certain players that play
abroad where getting tired when it came down the final rounds of the
qualifier.
With the new format that they are proposing, EVERY team will have to
play the same amount of games to qualifiy.
Remember these are all proposals that is being presented to FIFA and
FIFA could change it.

| CONCACAF is for North and Central America (and it includes the West
Indies).
CSF is for South America only.
I don't know the reason as to why they are separate but I do know that
it has been like that for many, many years. So, I would probably
assume that the reason is based on history.

| Colombia 0 Arg. 1
On my recent stopover in Munich I was treated to this match (first half
highlights, second half live) to follow the England v Italy clash.
I'd forgotten what a gulf there is between the interpretation of the
game in Europe and S. America.
The Argentinian "goal" in the first half was a speculative shot from
about 35 metres which the Colombian goalie "shepherded" with hands wide
apart - clearly certain it was going well past his left post. The ball
passed within about six inches of him and settled neatly into the
corner of the net at a very sedate pace - now I know why Tino Asprilla
feels at home with the Newcastle goalkeeping squad !
The live action was just that - absolute mayhem with players being
scythed down rather than tackled - and the ref carrying on as if
nothing had happened - giving free kicks but not really bothering with
cards too much. Argentina were down to ten men in the second half and
were contend to defend (kick anyone looking threatening) but they
looked super fit compared with the "relaxed" home team, who managed to
miss a penalty after Tino was felled in the box.
Add the fact that the game was played on a dry, bald, bumpy pitch which
looked about Sunday league standard, and you can see it was not a
pretty sight.
One interesting deviation from our norm was the use of ballboys
equipped with a supply of game balls, so a defender kicking the ball
out of the ground was not guaranteed breathing space as the ballboy
simply threw a new ball to the attacking side - resulting in several
extremely quickly taken throws and subsequent attacking pressure. I think
this would be good news here too.
Cheers,
Colin

Sounds like Scottish football to me!!!
I like the bit about the balls being thrown straight back into play to
speed things up. Chelsea owe Filbert St a few quid for the two that
Newton blasted well out of the ground yesterday!

| Ugly way of ending games between Colombia vs Paraguay and Bolivia vs
Argentina.
------
Colombia vs Paraguay - Very good game for Paraguay as they had a very
good control of the game.
With about 12 minutes to go, Asprilla (Colombian striker) and Chilavert
(spelling? Parguay's goalie) were given red cards. In a replay video,
it showed that Chilavert came behind Asprilla, gave some words and spit
Asprilla, Asprilla in return gave him an elbow to the face. Both
thrown out.
Few minutes later,a brawl brakes between the benches. No one knows
what happens but pictures showed Aristizabal (Colombian striker)
kicking Chilavert. After game interviews, Asprilla said that while
sitting in the bench, Chilavert came to him and punched him. I guess
Aristizabal (and the rest of the Colombian's bench) saw it and were not
going to sit there. Chilavert denied that he hit Asprilla, and that
Asprilla was a liar (and said few more unkind words). He said that he
is an honest person and that someone better showed some prove that he
ever did that.
UNIVISION this past Sunday got a video that showed (crystal clear)
Chilavert going toward the Colombia bench and puched Asprilla in the
face. Aristizabal saw it and ran toward Chilavert and started kicking
him. Univision said that they will be submitting that tape to FIFA.
------
Argentina vs Bolivia
Without about 5 minutes to go, Argentina with 2 men down (and reports
said that it should have been more) a huge brawl break between the
Argentinian team and the fans, police and the Bolivian team.
Based on reports and a tape that Univision showed, a person (it looked
like he was dressed in a police uniform) was trying to pick up a ball
and an Argentinian player kicked the ball real hard (not sure if it was
toward him or not). This person then punches (KO) the Argentinian
player, and next thing you know fists are flying between the
Argentinian team and the police and then few fans get involved.
Based on reports (including Argentinian newspapers), team from
Argentina were not playing soccer but looking for blood. "Argentina
was a disgrace" and fans are demanding the resignation of Passarella.
------
Not a very good night of soccer in South America.
Paraguay is looking very good and so far deserved to qualify for the
WC. Colombia will probably qualify but they are not looking to good at
the moment. Ecuador is looking pretty good and has a good shot at
making it. Uruguay looks horrible and at this moment they don't
deserve to qualiify. Argentina has a great advantage as they have 6
out 7 games at home and if they get their act together, they should
qualify. Bolivia in the other hand has 5 out of 7 game on the road and
they have not done well on the road.
Venezuela is alredy eliminated and Peru is just about being eliminated.
Chile has a shot for the 4th place.
Next games are around April 30th:
Ecuador @ Argentina
Peru @ Colombia
Uruguay @ Paraguay
Venezuela @ Chile
Bolivia idle

This whole WC campaign in South America is turning into a fiasco.
Argentina seem to have reverted to tactics of many years ago where they
kicked everything that moved ! I've got to believe that FIFA must take
serious action against these offenders...but you never know with these
guys....
The friendly last week with Jamaica / Mexico league side that was
reported here...players brandishing bottles & bricks etc (yes..the
PLAYERS !) has another twist to it...the Mexican companies who hired
the training pitch and the Team bus have "withdrawn" their facilities !
The Jamaican team are training on the hotel pitch (very small)......
The team may not be able to hire a bus to get to the game.
Comic cuts indeed !!
OK..hornets nest time....the Bolivian team insist on playing their
games at 12,000 ft altitude. Give them a tremendous advantage over
their opposition. Yet another daft situation that FIFA are doing
nothing about. Teams are going for 2 weeks acclimatisation and still it
does them no good. They just can't last 90mins at that altitude.
OK, so Bolivia is crap....but thats not the point. From the past few
months my attitude to football here is that it is corrupt, cynical and
almost lawless. FIFA and the respective country associations are
failing badly.
It is clear that the WC should not be played in South America for the
forseeable future. Argentina should be banned for a lengthy period.
Most teams should face stiff fines for their indicipline...and Bolivia
should not be allowed to use THAT stadium. If England can get banned
for theor supporters actions, then what penalty should these teams face
because of their PLAYERS actions ?
