The club that gave the world Steve Bruce.

Most famous supporter? Brian Moore (the commentator, not the
ex-England hooker). Hmm, you've got a lot to answer for!

Well a collegue of mine is also a Gills fan... he was busy ranting and
raving over their result last night.... It's sad.. so sad...

For those of you aren't up to date:

Gillingham are currently lying second in division 3 - two defeats in 17
games, and one of the meanest defences in the League having only
    conceded 6 goals.

Currently having 32 pts, they only managed 40 ish in the whole of last
season, their star players are Dennis Bailey - ex QPR and scorer of a
hat-trick against Man Utd many years ago , and Lee Fortune-West, scorer of
    nine goals this season.

    Manager = Tony Pulis
Av. Attendance = 6000 ish, (last years was 3500)

    Cheers,

    Gary

P.S does anyone have last nights FA Cup replay result against mighty
    Wycombe.

Er, one startling omission from the previous impressive note is their
somewhat perilous financial position. Maidstone's not that far away is
    it?

    Dom,

We also unleashed Tony Cascarino into the world, apparently Gills
signed him from non-league for a set of shirts and some corrugated
    iron - a bit over-priced I would say :-)

    Re: .4

Financially, we were a week away from bankruptcy during the summer, but
a new director stepped in, got rid of all the dead wood, there was
plenty of it, and we should now be safe until at least the end of the
    season.

Gills' third defeat of the season sees them dropping to third in the

    Gills latest:

Gillingham sign lower division journeyman Steve Butler for 100,000
from Cambridge - IMO a bit OTT for a 34 year old.

Unfortunately, I won't be in England on Saturday, but I should be home in
time to see the Gills in their 4th round tie.

Go back to the Leeds note, check my reply to your note, and do some
    simple maths !!!!

play up Gravesend eh Derek !!!

Graveyard can play up a bit if they like, and I hope they enjoy the
day. However you're true ability to recognise the giants of the game is
commendable. Personally I don't care whether we play Leeds or Reading
    in the fizzy final.

522.16TDCIS3::M_HOTLINECan I be electric too ? Tue Jan 09 1996 08:059
Well, after Saturdays horror show, 3 - 1 defeat against Reading with
both Dave Martin (captain) and Neil Smith as well as Tony Pulis, the
manager, being sent off, it is back to the more important matter at
hand, the Div 3 championship. Tonight the Gills play top of the table
    Chester at home.

    Up the Gills.

    Gary
522.17And you brought 3000 up for the game. Good, noisy atmosphere !!!CHEFS::CROSSATue Jan 09 1996 13:2320
    Gary,

With reference to your comment for support I must concur - Right up
the Gills after the thuggish display they put on on Saturday!! I was
looking forward to a good game considering their run in the league at
the moment. Sadly this all seemed to go out the window. Your number 10
seemed to be the only player interested in playing a bit of football !!

The other worrying point came in the pub beforehand when I was
surronded by approximately 30 gills fans giving it loads on the abuse
front. Glad to say most actually would talk reasonably but there seems
to be a bit of a racist element to the supporters. When questioned
about Fortune-West he was considered O.K for a (insert assorted racist
words !!) as was he above named number 10.

Anyway we now face Sunderland/Man Utd at home in the next round and
    Leeds away tommorow night.

522.19#Sorry about all this Gary !!!CHEFS::CROSSATue Jan 09 1996 13:458
    Rick,
From our lot maybe. How many tix have Leeds got left ? Are you going ?
Why have you got such awful taste in town centre pubs ? What are you
doing polluting this note ? All this and more may be answered in next
    weeks episode of ......etc etc

    RE: .17

    Stretch,

Fair point about the racism, unfortunately there has always been a
small minority of racist fans at Gillingham, however I doubt very much
whether the problem is any worse at Gillingham than at any other club in
    the country.

As for the on-pitch thuggery, they have in the past trained with Gary
Mason, (ex-boxer), and Wolf (from Gladiators), maybe their influence
has rubbed off on the players !

Here's hoping that Reading beat Leeds.

    Gary.

Gillingham thrash top of the table Chester 3 - 1 , with a second half
hat-trick from new signing Steve Butler, attendance 9191, so back to
    the top we go.

Well, what more can I say ? Another emphatic win for the Gills, still
only conceded 8 goals in the league so far !!! They are now 5 pts clear
    of Preston and Chester.

Away to Athletico Wigan next week.

    Tuesday 30th January.

    Gillingham 2 - 0 Mansfield

    Rattray (15)
    T.Butler (23)

Gills' promotion charge continues, thanks mainly to thier impressive
home form - 11 wins in 13 games with only 1 defeat. They remain 4
    points clear of Preston.

Well, as my contract is up today, this will be my last note entered in
this topic, so I would like to finish off with a few predictions:

    Premier Champs - Newcastle
    FA Cup - Liverpool
    Div 1 - The Palace
    Div 3 - Who else !

Note the lack of silverware for both Man Utd and Leeds.

And for all the Reading fans, we'll probably see you in Div 2 next
    season :-)
