515.0. "English Football in Crisis - Part Two" by CHEFS::STRATFORDS (Steer clear of the Zebra Bros) Fri Oct 27 1995 09:24

The Premiership and the FA are currently slugging it out to help the
Endsleigh League with the marketing of their TV rights. Both have
presented a package which they can offer the TV stations and both are
seemingly attractive in their own ways to the Endsleigh League.

However, in both cases, the deals would seem to be the beginning of the
end for the Football League. If the FA get the deal, the marketing of
all bar the Premiership will handled by one orgainsation. This will
lead to the FA at some point taking over the administration of the
Fottball League "bit by bit". However, if the Premiership win the deal,
there will be inevitable pressure for the rest of the League to join
the Premiership as an administrative deal.

Does English football need 3 organisations running the game? Is there a
danger in the Premiership taking control of the rest of the League?
What would the difference between the Premiership and old Football
    League be?

    Discuss.

515.1We're going to have to put our thinking caps on...VARESE::SACHA::IDC_BSTROh no! NOT Milan Kundera again!Fri Oct 27 1995 12:268
Er, Stuart...is this sudden desire for philosophical discussion about
the state of our game a response to my note yesterday (I forget where)
about the lack of general football topics in this conference?

A comparison of the meat pies on offer at football league grounds would
have done just as well... ;-)

    Dom,

Nope its something that I've been thinking about recently. I did enter
a brief note (which I think Dezzz followed up) in the Arsenal
Topic but nobody seemed to follow on.

    Two interesting points arise:

Firstly, people are less interested in the bit by bit taking over of
English football by the Premiership (possibly a bigger threat than the
demise of the cheap shop brand cup), and,

Secondly, our resident Leeds (x3) fan finds it far more interesting
to discuss a spurious transfer rumour than the future of the game.

Wrong.. he's more interested in working... & entering the odd note
    when he's not busy..

    	Cheers,

    	Rick.

But that note is still on a spurious transfer rumour...

PS Rick, you ain't the only one who is busy but some of us can
    	multi-task.
