498.2 | Proof that there are no pushovers in Europe... | VARESE::SACHA::IDC_BSTR | Oh no! NOT Milan Kundera again! | Fri Oct 20 1995 14:16 | 16 |
| Surprise of the week must be Halmstadt's 3-0 trouncing of Parma
yesterday evening. Not only were Parma taken well-and-truly to the
cleaners, but messrs. Stoitchkov, Crippa and Dino Baggio were getting
well iritable by midway through the second half, so much so that Parma
picked up at least 4 bookings (not sure if anyone'll miss the second
leg, though).
The only "pity" was that a journalists' strike meant that the game was
shown without commentary - after the absurdly partizan commentary on
Italia 1 for the Juventus-Rangers match, I'd have liked to hear the
reaction to the multi-millionaires being trounced by "a bunch of
amateurs".
I still wouldn't write Parma off, though.

| Hi Dom,
You mean the game was shown with just crowd noise and pictures? That'd never
happen in England - they'd get so many demands that ALL games were shown like
that!
Great result, but I agree, Parma can get those back at home.

498.4 | Motty's Italian alter ego is Bruno Longhi... | VARESE::SACHA::IDC_BSTR | Oh no! NOT Milan Kundera again! | Fri Oct 20 1995 14:42 | 11 |
| Graham,
I'm sure most people would agree with you about getting rid of
commentators en bloc...Motty may seem abominable, but they're the same
the world over (hmm, what's your opinion of Swiss commentators?)
Nice to see a general "evening-out" in playing standards across Europe,
too - Swiss, Austrian and Swedish teams are really starting to give the
big boys a few headaches!

I wouldn't claim my German was up to criticising. My main gripe with
them is that they insist on interviewing players as they come off the pitch.
Footballers have enough trouble stringing a sentence together when they've got
time to think, so how can they expect anything interesting in that situation?
> Nice to see a general "evening-out" in playing standards across Europe,
This'll be 'mainland Europe' of course?!
