The Swiss media are reporting that the Div 1 Clubs are revolting again. They
say they're talking of leaving the FA, but I assume they mean FL. What's the
plan - a 2-div Premier League? Or something separate. Do they know what
they're doing?

    Grahame,

The bits and pieces I've seen centre around the fact that certain clubs
believe that they deserve more of the FL money pot as they believe they
generate more of the income. The clubs in question are:

Palace, Millwall, Stoke, Wolves & Sunderland & A.N. Other (I did
see Barnsley bandied about but I presume that this was someones
    	idea of a sick joke)

    Stuart

Well this certainly shows some of the realistic ambitions that these
clubs have of getting into the Premier League. It may be a little too
presumptious on my part but are we rapidly approching a situation ala
Italy and Spain where the ambition of the second league clubs is being
slowly squeezed out of them like a tube of toothpaste.

Football authorities and the clubs have made their bed...now they have
    to lie in it....

    Dezzz.
493.6CHEFS::STRATFORDSSteer clear of the Zebra BrosWed Sep 20 1995 14:0915
    Dezzz,

I think it shows that these clubs have little signs before their eyes
whilst realising that they cannot *afford* not to be in the
Premiership, particularly when it comes to transfer fees. Whilst this
particular area is under threat from the european Court (Legal Opinion
is due from the judge today - although quite what that is as judgement
will not be given until the end of the year), I forsee it going one of
two ways, either everyone will start getting long term, i.e. 10 year
contracts or else the transfer system will collapse and players will be
put on annual contracts. Which would mean getting rid of the dross.
Perhaps thats not a bad idea given the state of the current Arsenal
    squad.

    Stuart
493.7"Ah, we're not ready to go up"GYMAC::DCASSIDYWed Sep 20 1995 17:5342

Ah yes Stuart...reverse psychology...unless they get the big bucks this
season, even if they do get promoted they would have to be very
    fortunate to
    		a) hang on to the good players that got them there in the
    first place.
    		b) be able to bolster a side up to survive in the
    premiership.

Now,...and this is just a maybe....

Some years ago (and I mean some years) Barrow were elected out of the
league. An interview with the chairman stated that things were much
easier, enjoyable and less stressful playing in the then Northern Premier
    League. That's understandable from a non-League status.
There are teams in Italy who consistently get promoted and relegated
from Serie A (as in Spain ); very few...Cagliari may be one that moves
into what I would call the 'Coventry' mould. Coventry have been in the
top division since 1967 and have 1 honour to show for their stay. Teams
like Manchester Untited , Leeds , Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest
have all been in Division 2 since but have been able to mount
    successful league campaigns.

Question to the panel...Under today's arrangements with Premier League
(SKY Money) , high transfers to survive; would it be better as a Five
year plan for Coventry to get relegated, pump the current market for
players fees and make the move for promotion once the market has
    inevitably slows down ?

As football moves progressively into an agressively money
    making/surviving entity...a similar batch of questions,dimemna will
face the chairmen of football clubs.

Was the charirman of Norwich City being obnoxious or was he just facing
    reality last season ??!!??

    Regards,

    Dezzz.

Thanks for putting that in Al (are you sure Sunderland are that high up?!!)

Is this becoming another Goodbye note? Enter a copy of the Div 1 table and
them leave?

Any news on the Div 1 relegation battle? I'm too scared to ask in the Reading
note, just in case they're in mourning.

    >ask in the Reading note

Well they are just outside the regelation area at the moment... they
have a spare point plus a few goals in hand....

They got creamed 3-0 at the weekend by Sheffield United.

Its obviously going to go right down to the last match... where Reading
get relegated and Watford stay up.... ;->

    Any comments Stretch??

Its looking bad for Pompey at the moment... I think they have just
    dropped into the bottom 3....

    Cheers,

Bottom of Div 1:

24	Luton P44 Pts 42 Gls Scored 37 - RELEGATED
23	Watford 45/48/62
22	Pompey 45/49/60
===========================================
21	Reading 44/50/49
20	Oldham 44/50/51
19	Millwall 45/51/43

Remaining Games:

TUES:	Oldham v Stoke
	Reading v Wolves

SUN:	B'ham v Reading
	Huddersfield v Pompey
	Ipswich v Millwall
	Oldham v Luton
	Watford v Leicester

On current form I would reckon:

Oldham 4pts
Reading 2 pts
Pompey 0 pts
Millwall 0 pts
Watford 3 pts

Which leaves it as:

24	Luton
23	Pompey
22	Millwall (On Goals)
========================
21	Watford
20	Reading
19	Oldham

But maybe that's South London wishful thinking!

    g/Rick,

Basically, Reading have their fate in their hands (omigawd!). If they
beat Wolves on Tuesday at home (possible) we will stay up. I for one do
not want to rely on an away trip to St Andrews to decide things.

The "creaming" was rather unfortunate given the goal diff between us
and Oldham. At 85 mins the game was still 1 - 0 to the Blades (Christ
they brouhgt a big crowd with them!) but by the 90th it was 3 - 0 !!!

After last night's games the Div 1 relegation issues are clearer with 2 of
Watford, Portsmouth & Millwall to go down.

At the top, Palace are confirmed in 3rd, Stoke & Charlton are still not
guaranteed a play off place. The situation could clear a little after Ipswich
play Huddersfield tonight.

Ipswich's win against Huddersfield reduces the Premier scramble to 3 from 4:

Charlton 70 pts
Stoke 70 pts
Ipswich 68 pts
Leicester 68 pts

Intriguingly, the relegation battle will also be decided by these teams as the
key fixtures are:

Watford v Leicester
Ipswich v Millwall
Stoke v Southend
Charlton v Wolves
Huddersfield v Portsmouth
