Malc,
In this year the historic Intertoto-Cup has been changed to the UI Cup.
Allowed to start: the 3 best teams of each country, which have not
been qualified for any European Cup (Champions League,Cup Winner, UEFA Cup).
e. g. Austria: 1. Salzburg ... Champions League
2. Sturm Graz... UEFA Cup
3. Rapid Wien... Cup winner
4. Austria Wien..UEFA Cup
5. FC Tirol.. UI Cup...semifinal,therefore UEFA Cup
6. Vorw.Steyr.. UI Cup
7. Linzer ASK.. UI Cup
Fits have been 12 groups with 5 clubs (60 teams).
The 12 group winners and the 4 best 2nd are playing in a K.O. system.
The last 4 teams will be play in thge UEFA Cup. So France has 2 more clubs,
Germany and Austria one more in the UEFA Cup.
The semifinal of the UI Cup = 1st round of UEFA Cup.
This has been very complicated, the clubs had a liitle summer pause.

I see the preliminary round as 1st round of UEFA Cup.
But correctly the semifinal is the preliminary round of UEFA Cup.

| Well said, Dezz. I saw it live and it was pretty dramatic stuff. An
85th minute goal from a deflected free-kick - without which Inter would
have won on away goals (the first leg finished 1-1). Reminded me of
when Arsenal beat Juventus 1-0 with an 8%th minute goal by Vaessen (cue
Stuart S.)
And before anyone asks, Paul Ince didn't play (suspension carried over
from last season). Latest news in Inter's troubled season is that they
want the Swiss national coach, Hodgson, as their new manager.

to head it in. I was at the home leg and it was a great night. It just shows you

play next year in the UEFA Cup.
The best 3 teams of the UI (this year 2) - Cup will play in the UEFA Cup , too.

Barcelona played the better football in both games. Bayern had more luck,
the better goalkeeper (Barca's goalkeeper Busquets mistake - 1:0 for Bayern)
and was the better tactical team.
Barcelona needs to much goal chances for one goal (3 chances at beginning
of the game for the 1:0 - 3.,Ferrer,16.Kodro,24.Popesc)
In my opinion not good for the final, Bayern is playing typical "football
chess", Barcelona plays football "for the eyes".

I agree about the first game in Munich - Barcelona were wonderful, especially
in the firsthalf. But Bayern came out and played for 15 minutes and scored 2
goals - they would have won if it hadn't been for a stupid backpass.
Last night Barca lacked imagination - they just didn't have an ida of how to
get the ball behind the defence. Perhaps if they'd used Jordi Cruyff a bit
more? If Klinsmann had been on form last night they would have had 4!
I believe Bayern won every one of their away games - they must be favourites
for the 2-leg final. Unfortunately!

Heribert,
Though it grieves me to say so, Bayern were by far the better
'team' over both legs...luck..mmm I think Barca's second goal in Munich
was just a little fortunate..
Bayern on Tuesday resisted the temptation early on to release Scholl
out of the then packed midfield...last 10 minutes Scholl was constantly
calling for the ball and so proved to be the catalyst for the first
goal. Klinsmann could have done with more help from Witichek but I
suppose he got used to that playing alongside Sherringham at
Tottenham (though I must say before the White Hart Lane brigade take me
up...Sherringham's overall game HAS improved immensely since Klinsmann
was there).
Barcelona definitely missed Hagi...he could have made a BIG difference
as Bayern's defence was breached on a number of occasions and a killer
touch was required...not like Bakero's open goial miss.

| I think I've read somewhere that those teams who are knocked out
in the champions league qualifying round are then entered into
the UEFA cup. Is this the case at all? For future years? Am I

| Yes, I think that's true. The UEFA Cup is so complicated now - I think we're
somewhere between the qualifying and preliminary rounds. The 'big names' don't
enter until the next round. Or possibly the one after that.

| Thanks for that, I've looked back at the draw and there are 26
ties in there. That would seem to indicate that once these are
played three teams who drop from the CL join in.
