| I agree with you that prices are too high for the games. There
is a package that includes quarter-finals, semifinals, final, and
the third place game. All for $60 something (still too expensive)
Emelec will not be playing in New York anymore. The last report
was that they were going to play in Orlando, Florida instead.
I heard a comment from a South-american reporter saying that the US
is the most regular team at the moment. I still believe they will not
reach semi-finals, experience is very important on these tournaments
(If you don't believe me, just remember how Mexico lost in the final
against Argentina in the last Copa America). But I do admit they have
been doing great, lately.

-2 Juan,
Yes, the US are playing well, and with confidence too. I too, don't
expect them to pass the quarterfinals, but they continue to improve and
will be a worthy opponent for anyone in this competition. I think the
US are not intimidated by their South American opponents anymore, which
has been a major contributor to their performance in the past. For an
American soccer fan who has followed them pretty closely since their
qualification for the 1990 World Cup, it is nice to see them win on a
more regular basis. I see a good future for the national team...
Best of luck to Columbia

Etcheverry scored in the 24th minute and the U.S. couldn't get the
equalizer despite a wide edge in play.
U.S. can still advance with a win or a tie vs. Argentina on Friday, a
tough task to say the least. Argentina routed Chile 4-0 last night.
The only other sure way for the U.S. to advance is to have Peru and
Ecuador tie tomorrow.

Columbia win on penalties
I've seen bits & pieces of this tournament, and I am really disappointed with
the standard of play so far. I was hoping that now the knockout phase has
started that teams would be a little more determined to push up and get goals,
especially as there is no extra time, but from looking at yesterday's match, it
doesn't look like it, especially as far as Columbia are concerned anyway.
I hope the U.S.A. do well against Mexico, as their gung ho spirit against
Argentina was very entertaining, and going forward they actually looked like
they had some ideas, unlike when I saw them at Wembley last year. They just need
to tighten up at the back, about 2-300%. They were very lucky not to concede
anything.

A tremendous win for the US in a match that the Argentine's are calling
the "Black Night" (rough Spanish translation):-). I can only comment
on the highlights of the match, but it looked like a simple case of the
Americans creating and converting their opportunities, while the
Argentine's tanked theirs. I would make the assumption that this is the
greatest single victory for the US, but sadly there was no coverage of the
game by any national English language television network. Prime
Deportiva owns rights to Copa America thru 1999, and the CONCACAF Gold
Cup (WC Qualifying). Looks like I will have to take more Spanish
lessons.
The time is now for the US Soccer Federation to promote such a victory
and play-up Major League Soccer. Unfortunately, 90 minutes of the best
promotional material has come and gone with the majority of this
nation's soccer fans unaware that we have even beaten Argentina 3-0...
...Hoping the dream can continue tonight v. Mexico.

The USA shot first and it was level at 1-1. The US then went up 3-1 as

The US side has come a long way in the last couple of years, and they
are playing attacking, entertaining football.

485.34 | USA v Brazil | VMSSPT::FUERTES | | Tue Jul 18 1995 18:46 | 43 |
| Saw both games and the Brazil v Argentina was definetely an exciting
match, specially the first 30 minutes. Both teams were pushing to
score. Argentina had the lead 2-1 in the 1st half and it looked like
Argentina was going to take it as they were controlling the ball very
well in Brazil's end. However, stupid fouls by Argentina really
screwed them up as the ref was given yellow cards and finally Astrada
made a stupid harsh foul, before the end of the half, that caused a
second yellow for him. Argentina was now down to 10 players and Brazil
started to have control of the game. Daniel Passarella, coach of
Argentina, made some substitutions for the second half that I thought
were a mistake. He took 3 of his best players (Balbo, Batitusta,
Ortega) out to replace with defenders/midfielders. Of course,
Passarella also gets thrown out of the game in the second half. Brazil
had control of the ball the whole second half but was having a hard
time getting thru the Argentine's defense. Finally, about 10 minutes
to go, a long pass down the middle to Tulio. Tulio, trying to trap the
ball with his chest, trap the ball with his left arm and scored.
I tend to agree with the commentators that Passarella made mistakes in
his substitution with USA and Brazil. In the USA game, 7 of his
starters did not start the game, and when they were down 2-0, he put in
Balbo and Batitusta. With Brazil, he took his offense out and put in
more defense. Well, when Argentina had the ball, they had no one that
could carry the ball in Brazil's end. Hopefully, he learned his
lesson.
------
As to the USA v Mexico games, the 1st 25 minutes was boring as both
teams had not taken a shot at goal. However, the game did picked and
USA had 2 great opportunities to score but Campos made great saves.
Both teams were definetely being cautious of not making any mistakes.
It should be an interesting semi-final.
Oh yeah, in case no one noticed, I guess Passarella really kept his
word that no one with long hair will play for Argentina. Batitusta
also kept his word that he will cut his hair to play for his country.

Well I saw both games on Sky Sports and I wouldn't write USA off yet.
Brazil are just as niave in defence as the US (they very nearly blew it
against Argentina's 10) and had difficulty breaking down Argentina who
sat back in the 2nd (by necessity of course). On the other hand the US
have nothing to lose, they've got further than expected and have done
so by beating (an albeit understrength) Argentina 3:0 and then holding
Mexico to a 0:0 draw and clinically finishing their penalties. Its
going to be a good semi final and I predict that it will produce the
tournament winners in the end! 8-)

| Yes, Astrada was number 15. Simone was also another player that I
thought was going to get send-off. He sure was quite in the second
half.
Last night I was looking at statistic of this tournament and it was
interesting to see Argentina as the 2nd team with most fouls and 2nd
team with most cautions and send-offs. Venezuela was first in both
categories.
The other interesting story that I saw in the WEB last night was that
the South American soccer federation is thinking seriously about moving
the finals to another country. There seemed to be some problems with
the television network from Uruguay who are doing a lousy job. I could
not understand as to why the network was doing it (there is a reason)
but they were not allowing certain networks outside Uruguay get the
feed and for others, while the game is going, they were intentionally
cutting players head (while they had the ball). This was noticeble in
the quaterfinals on Sunday. The SA soccer federation has received
major complains from networks (outside of Uruguay) who paid the rights
to get the feed. The federation warned the government of Uruguay that
if this does not get resolve, they will move the finals to another
country. The decision was suppose to be determine yesterday.
Vamos Colombia!!!!

to write-off the US against any big-name opponent (haven't we all?).
I actually think the US can win this match, but only if they play with
the gung-ho strategy that took Argentina by surprise. Last year, Bora
Milutinovic sent the US 11 on to the pitch against Brasil with one strategy:
keep the score 0-0 and try to win it on penalties. As soon as Brasil
put one on the board, the match was over.
Under Steve Sampson, the US have played with agressiveness and
assertiveness, something impossible under the rigid Bora. While the US
Soccer Federation have been looking for a new head coach with
"international experience", Sampson has served as the interim coach and
has nothing to lose by giving more freedom to his players to create and
attack. The result is a team having fun and playing with confidence,
not to mention a fantastic run in this tournament. For those
of you who saw the US at Wembley last year, this is a transformed
team...the faces are largely the same...the attitude is different.
Tomorrow will be a great night for US soccer no matter what the
outcome.
The miracle on grass will happen tomorrow night!

>critical of your comment though...their dominance of the US is clear:-)
US lost to Brazil 2-0 in '92 US cup. US lost to Germany 4-3. So, it
seems that Juan might be right about US never scoring agains Brazil.
I saw the game yesterday and both teams played very well. Urugay got
two well deserved goals BUT the referee definetely set the tempo of the
game (pesonally, it was lousy). Both teams were doing some harsh fouls
and Uruguay was clearly fouling Asprilla just about everytime he got
the ball. Referee should have pull a lot of yellow cards, specially
when the attacker pass a defender and the defender took him down. Ref
called the foul but no yellow card. Uruguay should have gotten about 6
more yellow card and Colombia about 4 more. Based on that, at least
one player from each team should have been sent off.
It was interesting to read an article, from the Mexican news paper,
that stated that the ref's will probably make sure that the final is
between Uruguay v Brazil and that Uruguay will win it. I hope this
does not hapen.
Well, I can almost bet that if Brazil makes it into the final, Uruguay
is going to foul Savio, Edmundo and Zinho constantly. If the referee
does not pull out the yellows, Brazil is going to have a hard time
trying to score.

| Colombia was my favorite, but as my Dad used to say "Don't put
your money on your heart".
After the announcement of the teams on the quarterfinals I sent
the following results to my friends putting my money on them:
US beats Mexico
Colombia beats Paraguay
Brasil beats Argentina
Uruguay beats Bolivia
Uruguay beats Colombia
Brasil beats US
Uruguay is the champion (I think I said this in one of my messages)
Colombia is 3rd.
So far, so good... :-)

| WOW!! USA played very well. They really had their opportunities to tied
the game. Of course, Friedel made some nice saves to keep the USA in
the game.
Anyway, Brazil is the better team in the final but as I said before,
unless the ref pulls out the yellow cards to Uruguay, Brazil has no
chance as they will be fouled constantly. Its going to be a rough
match.
Let's go Brasil!!!!

485.51 | Final stays in Uruguay | VMSSPT::FUERTES | | Fri Jul 21 1995 20:50 | 40 |
| I finally got the whole story about the TV problems and the possibility
of moving the finals somewhere else.
First, the final will be played at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo
this Sunday.
The problem was that the games when Uruguay played at the Centenario
where not being televised live to the city of Montevideo. The South
American Soccer federation states that stadiums where games are not
sold out, must blackout the TV feed about 20 kilometers in diameter
from the stadium. Well, the stadium on Centenario has barely gotten
50% of the tickets sold (semi-final, it was only 2/3 sold and it is not
even 2/3 sold for the FINALS). So, people from Montevideo have not
been able to see their own country play LIVE.
The television company from Uruguay wanted the soccer federation to
lift the ban but the federation said no. Well, the television company
have intentionally done a lousy job in given the feed to outside the
country, which realy got the SA soccer federation mad. This forced the
SA federation to give an ultimatum, stop doing a lousy job or else the
final will be moved.
Well, it seems that main newspapers in Uruguay has had this issue in
the headlines. Stating that the final might be moved to Rio de Janeiro
and that it did not seem fair that when its own country playing in the
final, at home, be televised LIVE thru the rest of the continent but
not to the capital of the country. They also stated that reasons that
games are not sold out is because the tickets are VERY, VERY expensive
for the people in Uruguay and that the intense cold (they are in
Mid-winter) has cause people to stay home. E.g. the cheapest ticket
for the Final is $25 dollar, which one can buy about 16 lbs of meat in
Uruguay with that amount of money. The most expensive ticket is about
$75 which comes close to 1 week's of salary.
The SA soccer federation finally decided to lift the ban. They are
also proposing to reduce the tickets, for women, children and the
elderly, at about $2.50 for the cheapest tickets.

485.52 | Uruguay that is. | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Juan Guevara | Mon Jul 24 1995 16:01 | 14 |
| Well, the America's cup came to an end and as I expected, Uruguay
is the new Champion. Enzo Franccescoli was considered the best
player of the tournament. Uruguay defeated Brasil in penalty shots
and Colombia embarrased the US 4-1 in the match for the third place. :-)
Remember my guess? 1st Uruguay, 2nd Brasil, and 3rd Colombia. I
think I just need to collect my money now.
Don't forget that "Copa Libertadores" is still going on, I get the
feeling that a Colombian club will win it this time... (I don't put
my money on it, though)

As the previous note mentioned Gremio (Brazil) 5 Palmerias (Brazil) 0
Nacional (Colombia) 1 Millonarios (Colombia) 0
Emelec (Ecuador) beat Sp Cristal (Peru) I believe 2-1.
Last night, they showed the game between Velez v River Plate. I only
saw the first half and Velez was winning 1-0 but it should have been at
least 3-0. River Plate had more control of the ball but Velez was
deadly in their counter-attack. Does anyone know what the final score
was?
