482.0. "Women's World Cup" by AYOV27::FW_TEMP01 (Billericay 6 Farnboro 0 (FAVase SF 81)) Mon Jun 05 1995 09:59

I believe the Women's World Cup has or is about to start in Sweden.

Has anyone got any info about the teams involved? I know England are there
with Canada, Nigeria and one other in their group.

Highlights of the England/Canada game are on BBC tomorrow.

I believe the United States is the defending champion.

Their opening match is Tuesday vs. China. The US plays an
entertaining, attacking brand of soccer. They recently defeated Brazil
4-1 in a warmup for the World Cup.

The USA v. Norway match tomorrow should be fantastic. Norway has
outscored their four opponents 20-1, and have evidently not been
threatened in any match. The US has also looked strong, although they
have not put together a complete 90 minutes of football yet. Both
team's think offense first and can score from anywhere on the pitch
(did anyone see the 35 yard free kick goal by the US v.
    Japan?...awesome).

The women's game at this level IMHO is just as entertaining as the
men's game. While the women do not possess the same level of speed and
endurance as the men, this is offset by a more open, attacking game.
The women don't waste our time with unnecessary diving, cheap fouls and
other tactics that slow the game down. I'm not about to take women's
WC tickets over men's, but it is a refreshing way to watch the sport.

you are absolutely correct--plus as a general rule the women players
don't believe every foul requires an academy award performance to
accentuate the foul let alone laying on the pitch until the magic
    sponge appears.

I hope its a good game for all to see

Well, despite the loss yeaterday, I was very pleased by the performance
of the American women. Norway has been the team of the tournament, and
deserved the win despite a ferocious last 20 minutes from the defending
champions. The normally composed, aggressive Norwegian defence looked in
trouble for most of this time but benefitted from excellent goalkeeping,
and a crossbar that served as an extra defender(fitting, as Norway
played with 10 for the final 15 minutes).

The US kept kept everyone but the goalkeeper and perhaps a sweeper
within thirty meters of Norway's goal and nearly paid the price twice by
    long ball counterattacks.

Overall, a great match to watch, and a testamonial to the potential of
the women's game. I hope Norway win the final, although I imagine
coming back from such a physical and emotional match could be
difficult. The US go out in style...and hope to play hosts when the
next Women's Cup starts in 1999.

Sooner than that, they will host the first appearance of Women's soccer
    in the '96 Olympics.

Just found out this morning that we (Massachusetts) will host a
Chiquita Cup match between Norway and Australia later this summer.

I think I'm right saying that the final is Saturday and Norway will
have played 6 games in 12 days or something ridiculous like that. I
think the men would have trouble with that pace! 8-)

    JBG,

Something like that. Think back to the men's Cup last year...
Can you just imagine the protest Jack Charlton would make if his lads had
to play 6 in 12? He'd have forced FIFA to allow packets of water to be
thrown on the pitch, stretcher stations at the midfield strip and 18
yard boxes, team physios to be allowed to run with the players, etc....;-)

The final is either on Saturday or Sunday (to be played in the US on
    ESPN at 1:00pm).

Saturday, 6/17 - China v. USA consolation match
Sunday, 6/18 - Germany v. Norway championship match

I sure hope ESPN does show the final match. I had heard that they
would only show it on ESPN (instead of ESPN2) if the US was playing. I
think that they have pissed off enough soccer fans by relegating the US
games to ESPN2 and showing no others. I don't care who's playing, I
want to see it (well, yes I do care, but the US is out after a good
effort and I want to see who beat them).

ESPN showed the China-USA match yesterday afternoon. I finally got to
see the team in action. Both squads played great ball and the 2-0 USA
victory was earned with creative attacking and hard-nosed defense.

The final match between Germany and Norway will be on ESPN2 (sh*t)
    tomorrow at 4 PM EST.

Massachusetts will play host to the best and worst of WWC95 when Norway
plays Australia later this summer as part of the Chiquita Cup. I
believe that the US women will be playing in Connecticutt.
