480.9 | Too earlyu for Switzerland | ALBIS::ASH | Grahame Ash @RLE | Wed May 24 1995 10:08 | 8 |
| Swiss footy is still going on, and the League is very tight (below 1st place).
Grasshoppers are almost certain to win the League, and as they're also in the
Cup Final, that puts Sion into the CWC. I don't know how many UEFA Cup spots
there are for Swiss teams (probably not 4!), but Lugano should be there.
Accurate info when it's sorted.

| For some reason, I was under the impression that someone had already
entered this info for Italy...so apologies for the wait:
Champions League Juventus
Cup Winners Cup Parma? (They're due to play Juventus in the Italian
cup final, but Juve have already qualified for the
Champions' League. However, Parma have already won
the UEFA cup, so they should qualify outright for
that...if you get the drift ;-))
UEFA Cup Lazio, Parma ? (see above) and any 3 from Milan (if
they don't win the Champions' League), Cagliari,
Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Inter and Naples...if memory
serves. There are still a couple of matches to go...
All dead simple, eh? Incidentally, heard an Inter supporter the other
day saying that Inter really need Milan to beat Ajax in order to leave
a UEFA place for Inter next year! Hmm, I know of 1 or 2 Milan
supporters who'd say that is sufficient reason for them to deliberately
lose tonight ;-)

| Good news for Rangers fans - Ajax's win makes them 8th ranked team in next
seasons Champions League.
Bad news is that UEFA have probably changed the rules so Blackburn will be
straight into the League stage instead.
It's good to be ENglish sometimes ;-)))))))
PS Parma go into Cup-Winners Cup next season with Italy only having 4 UEFA
Cup places (instead of 5 with winners).

(actually a sub-division of Intertoto)
Intertoto is an association for 84 Pools companies and its president is
Richard Frigren who is MD of the Swedish state-owned Tipstjanst.
Leonard Johansson is president of UEFA. He also is president of the EFP
and a director of Tipstjanst.

You surely wouldn't be insinuating that the President of UEFA would
line his own pockets in a similar manner to Juan Samaranch, President
of the IOC? Tsk, tsk. Shame on you.

Can somebody confirm that the UEFA Cup matches are
drawn every round.
However, is there a rub on this one that means certain
teams cannot meet with other teams in the subsequent
rounds.
Radio 4 this morning seemed to imply that Raith Rovers
would be playing Man Utd. in the next round if both teams
go through.

| Kev,
I seem to remember from Norwich's time in the UEFA cup a couple of seasons
ago that the teams are split into a number of groups of 8. Within each
group there are four seeded teams - each seeded team is drawn
against a non-seeded team. Therefore, there will be up to 4 teams that a
team can be drawn against. As to how the groups of 8 are decided, I have
no idea.
