476.0. "Premier League players of the year..." by FORTY2::JONES (Neil) Mon Apr 10 1995 17:10

Don't know if its been mention elsewhere in this file...

Heard on the radio that Alan Shearer was voted player of the year.

Robbie Fowler was voted young player of the year.

    PFA Player of the Year

    1. Alan Shearer
    2. Matt Le Tissier
    3. Jurgen Klinnsman

PFA Young Player of the Year

    1. Robbie Fowler
    2. Nick Barmby
    3. Chris Sutton

I don't know how Steve McManaman was missed out in these awards.
He has been one of Liverpools best players this season, and almost
    singlehandedly(sp?) won them the CCC.

    Any opinions???

Theres also the point that these awards seem incredibly biased towards
centre forwards/goalscorers. Doesnt anyone else on the field deserve an
    award?

Is it not the case that these players are voted for by their fellow
professionals hence there's probably a big "wannabe" factor here ? Also
your average professional footballer is not likely to be a contestant
on Mastermind therefore he will vote for whoever The Sun thinks he
should vote for. Having said that I would have voted for Shearer then
Klinsmann then Le Tissier myself as they have all had terrific seasons.

    Malc,

I suppose that also strikers are a lot more high profile, i mean, they
have something to show for playing well, goals. I suppose its more
difficult for players in other positions to "prove" their worth to the
    world at large.

In addition the nominations had to be in by January thus Cantona was nominated
before his ban and Mc manaman hadn't really started to shine for Liverpuddle
before then.

The nominations were gathered in the first week of March, and McManaman had
not scored since October when he scored in the League cup final.

I nominate Brian Tinian and Steve Torpey. Brisssl City and Swansea City's ace
goal scorers, respectively.

Maybe I've been sheltered from good footy for too long...

 Chris Coleman??

Nah, Salako's better.
476.13CHEFS::GEORGEMCannibalise LegalbisThu Apr 13 1995 12:3310
p.s. I think Salako only played on loan, but it was for quite a while, and
Swansea did put a bid in for him, as he wanted to stay. Lucky for him,
Swansea's bid fell short of Palace's requirements (only by about 20k, I think),
and he returned to San Selhurst, where he walked straight into the first team
(after reviving Swansea's fortunes single handedly), and consequently into the
English set-up.

Coleman, on the other hand, was always crap, and received massive cheers when
he announced his departure in a local rag. John Williams (Coventry) on the
other hand....

Interesting you say Coleman was crap, he was Palace's player of the
year last season and has been superb this year too (if overshadowed by
Shaw) and has become a Welsh regular. Blackburn & Spurs reputedly have
their eye on hism if we go down.

Yup, he seems to do Okay for Palace, but wasn't a particular favourite on the
North Bank at the Vetch.
