465.0. "CRICKET (WHEN REPAIR::CRICKET IS DOWN)" by GLADYS::CRAVEN (Give Me My Makita Mac Back) Tue Jan 17 1995 02:28

Once again, the intolerable situation of REPAIR::CRICKET being down has
driven me to the unusual action of entering a note in here. Apologies
to those who don't follow cricket, but because of the very
unsportsmanlike behaviour of the poms who run REPAIR, it is a necessary
action. Besides, I know you all read footy as well as cricket,
especially you Andy Sant. I am sure the mods will forgive this slight
    transgression.

Today the second one day final, one of the pinnacles of the
summer, takes place. Australia is playing Australia A in Melbourne in
front of probably 60-80,000 people. It should be a great day. What is
unfortunate is that we are having to resort to playing with ourselves
as there is no one out there good enough to do us over.

One of the controversies arising out of the first one day final in
Sydney on Sunday was that Paul Reiffel was chosen as 12th man for
Australia when he may have made quite a difference if allowed to play
in the 'A' side. What does the panel think of this?

    Regards,
    Ica

Yes Ica, it is a sad day for the English when they can
read their newspapers and see more concerning Charles'
ball plays than the English Cricket teams and prefer to have
comments from their supposed well-informed cricket writers
and EX-champions than from the well-informed and articulate
noters in Australia. So much for the English cricket sense
of fair play thankfully this chalice of hope for the world
which involves the true meaning of cricket has finally passed
from the old and decrepit establishment of England to the
invigorating and thriving environs of Australia.

As for the game on Sunday, excellent fielding and batting
from two well drilled teams with the Australian top team
finally realising that there is competition from the young
hawks of the future. This new found spirit and realization
that their places are in jeopardy should hopefully bring
some of the "old" campaigners back to their best form for
    	the remaining tests.

Also a bit of whingeing from the English captain concerning
the two Australian teams competing. Well if the English had
any confidence then they would not be so worried about competing
against a 2nd's team. Also considering they only beat ZImb once I
think they have themselves to blame. Also I must query whether
it's the competition they don't like or the lack of money they
will receive from the one day competition since they considered
it a foregone conclusion that they would get at least the losers
cheque for the finals. Pretty pathetic for that old English
chin up tradition but then leaving repair unaccessible for
extended periods of time does not show much either.

    							regards
    							Mike N.

    Yes Colin,
we beat 'em at both forms of 'rugger' too. Not only that but they
refuse to play us at soccer cos we'd drill 'em there too. They don't
seem too keen to play the Scots much at soccer either now, do they?
Why did they get rid of those matches they used to have in May between
    the home countries?

    Ica

p.s. latest is 5/175, heaps of overs left (17)
465.9Seriously, I think they were sick beating us !!KIRKTN::CDOUDIEPerfect '9' or bust...Tue Jan 17 1995 06:069
Cos they sent up there toughest fans fur the 'Rous Cup', which they put
up and we won, tried to start a bit of bovver an' the Glesga Polis just
huckled them right out of Hampden. Their excuse was they didn't know
you could get Doc Martens in a size 13 and they had not prepared
properly for the ensuing battle. A police report stated that some of the
policemen had a harder time stopping their weans fighting in the bath,
    (alledgedly of course).
