456.0. "Sky to show Scottish Football" by RTFM1::GENIE::GOODEJ (Mr Dragon - 761 4831) Thu Dec 01 1994 08:29

Sky Sports have done a deal with the Scottish FA to show live
football over the next 4 years. Apparently it covers 17 matches per
season including Cup games, and coverage starts with the Celtic /
Rangers match on Jan 4th '95.
The deal is woth just over 10million which Sky will use to offset
advertising revenue loss during the matches. They are hoping that only
a few viewers will cancel their subscriptions as a result of the
announcement. Sky's boss was quoted as saying "we know we have a large
core of viewers who want to see great football, but we also have to
cater for the minorities & the SFA are offering a great deal of cash
if we show their games too."

You could actually be right there, I can see many millions down
south tuning in to watch Hearts v Partick Thistle or some other
    mega-exciting match!!

Quote from Sky - "We can now show the best Scots football to a wider
audience...we look forward to seeing the influence of overseas players
like Laudrup and Boli". Does this mean they'll just show Rangers games
as I don't think they'll want to show many of the "little" teams.

On a more serious note, the deal to show the Old Firm game on
Wednesday 4th Jan. has not been voted a good idea up here. This
game has traditionally been played on the 1st or 2nd of the month.
Rangers wanted the game shown live on Tuesday afternoon as it's a
holiday in Scotland, but as it's not a holiday in the rest of the UK,
Sky decided it should go ahead on the Wednesday evening. The Rangers
and Cellic fans usually get blootered on Hogmany, go to the match with
a serious hangover and get blootered again no matter the result. Most
(or those in a job) will be back at work on the Wednesday so might
have to curb their alchohol intake.

Relative value of English v Scots footie

England 300 million over 5 years
Scotland 10 million over 4

Looks like Sky has a better deal than the SFA got for Scottish Football.

Still it means someone other than Rangers might have 200,000 to pay on
English reserve team players.

It least it might mean the SFA might stop wingeing to EUFA the next time
a live match clashes with Cowdenbeath v Alloa (av crowd 200) :-)

Have Sky announce dany other fixtures? I s'pose that the complaints
about ManU always being on telly will now have to be applied to
    Rangers...

Why would you complain about Rangers, they are the only team worth
watching in Scotland. (That's if your serious, if you like tragic
comedies then Celtic would be your preference) *>

I'm sure "Scottish" & "football" shouldn't go in the same sentence
    after Scotlands current performances!

I think the program should be called :

The "Rangers run away with the title once again" show..
