    How about a note for internet mailing lists...
    
    - I'm sure most people know of them, but what are they and how to you
    access them ?
    
    
    Here's my sad attempt at an explaination, but I'm sure there's other
    noters who know more about it then I do.
    
    What are they ?
    
    The internet is basically a huge world wide network which has evolved
    rather than been designed, therefore people are free to post
    whatever they want into common accesible areas.
    
    - digital has a number of gateways to this network allowing easynet
    (digital's network) users to access the internet. 
    
    There are many interest news groups and there are various ways of
    accessing them, the most relevant news group to this notesfile is
    called rec.sport.soccer. (I haven't go time to go into detail on how to
    access news groups, but I'm sure some helpful sole may)
    
    Mailing lists are specific interest lists (a bit like distribution
    lists in VMS mail or ALLIN1) to which you can send a mail and it is
    distributed to all subscribers on that list.
    
    
    How do you access them ?
    
    You need to find the address to which to subscribe, send a mail and
    them hopefully you will receive all the mail that goes to that mailing
    list.
    
    Note that you usually DON'T send general mail to the same address that
    you use to subscribe - when you subscribe you usually get a mail back
    acknowledging that you're now on the mailing list and a new address to
    send anything to that you want to go to all other subscribers on that
    list.
    
    
    
    An example....
    
    From VMS send mail to
    
    VBORMC::"<the relevant address>"
    
    From ALL-IN-1 send mail to 
    
    <the relevant address>@internet
    
    
    In the case of Everton you would use
    
    VMSMAIL
    
    VBORMC::"[email protected]"
    
    ALL-IN-1
    
    [email protected]@internet
    
    
    Use the following notes to post the addresses for any other relevant
    addresses.

I'd say talk to your local technical guru as he/she must already have been sucked in the hype that been going around about the WWW for the past 18 months. It's too long to go into here about how to connect on your own, from scratch. If you have a PC as you say, you need to see about installing Pathworks and TCP/IP (not an easy installation mind you). From there you need to look at Netscape (the browser of choice at the moment). If I were you I'd look immediately at getting the WWW going on your local VMS machine (providing it have UCX installed and also that it's part of a cluster - better chance that UCX is started). Even better would be access to an ULTRIX or OSF/1 machine as TCP/IP in part of the OS on these two machines. TCP/IP is necessary as it's the transport protocol used on the Internet. No TCP/IP no WWW :-(. For most technical info look in the INTERNET_TOOLS notesfile located on LJSRV2:: . If you have a specific question, you can aim them in my direction as I've been through the mill on most of the issues you will probably come across getting started. James.
