399.0. "WC total top scorer?" by BCFI::LIDEN () Fri Jun 17 1994 18:42

      Hi Soccer Gurus,

In a Swedish Newspaper there is a Soccer WC history Quiz.

I need help with one of the questions.

      Q. Who has scored most goals in the history of WC?

      a. Gerd Mller
      b. Pel
      c. Uwe Seeler
      d. Juste Fontaine

I guess it is Mller as he scored 10 goals in 1970 and 1 in the final 74
and I think he scored 1 against Sweden in the second round group the same
year. Probably he scored a few more 74, but I don't know how many.

I know that Fontaine scored 13 goals in 1958 and I do not think he played
      any more WCs.

Pel was injured early 1962 & 1966, so I don't believe he is the top
      scorer.

      I don't know much about Seeler's scoring.

Anyone who can help me? (Jemand der mir helfen knnen?)

      Ta in advance,

      Christer Lidn

(A Swede having in-laws near Prenton Park (Tranmere).)

Fan of Barca, Liverpool & Hammarby (Sweden).

P.S. Is there any Barca note? Hay una noticia de Barca?

399.1Muller with 10-4XSTACY::JDUGGANFri Jun 17 1994 19:4916
    Hi,

Gerd Muller (Der Bomber) has 14 (10 in Mexico, 4 in Germany)
    so he is the top-scorer.

He beat the record held by Fontaine (13) who got all of his
in Sweden'58 (they got to the semi-finals).

Other top scorers include: '74 Lato (Poland) with 7
                               '78 Kempes (Arg) with 6
                               '82 Rossi ???
                               '86 Lineker

As far as I know these answers are correct!

    Jim.

Who is the guy who is shown getting his hat trick in the McDonalds ad
for the triple burger? Is that Lato or is it Boniek? Is the game a
3rd/4th place match against Russia from a WC of way back?

Paul,
Zbigniew Boniek was the player. I think it was one of the group games
against either Belgium or Russia.

I reckon as Sweden and Cameroon look a bit dodgy at the back, Romario
is a pretty good bet for the golden boot.

After last night's performance, I reckon Batistuta may be top scorer
this time round. I believe his international record is 22 goals in 33
    games. Not bad at all.

I grudgingly agree. Anyone who gets 5-6 in the first round is a good
    bet.

Talking about records (22 in 33), Van Vossen (Holland) hasn't played
that many games yet, but is always used as a substitute, and has a
record of (I could be wrong) 13 played, 11 scored, or something close
    to that.

I'm outraged dagnamit. Any goals scored in the 3/4 play-off count
towards the Golden Boot award. This is a disgrace! If you are, you are
out. If a Stoichkov goal denies me money, well, I'll be blooming ticked
    off.
