I wonder what the Germans slipped the Bolivian goalie at half time.
One minute Ray Clements won't stop complementing him, the next......
....for those who didn't see it, a German lobs the Bolivian defense
(was it Matteaus from inside his own half?) & beats the offside trap.
The Bolivian keeper decides to play sweeper, charges right out of his
area & falls overs trying to tackle the German who's collected the
ball. The ball breaks to Klinsmann who has to knock it into an empty
net....shades of Brian Finch, eh Jerry??

397.4 | USA-Switzerland 1-1 | COPCLU::SIIG | Great Dane at Large | Sun Jun 19 1994 02:07 | 22 |
| Goals:
0-1 Georges Bregy ('40)
1-1 Eric Wynalda ('44)
Warnings:
Dominique Herr, Switzerland
Nestor Subiat, Switzerland
John Harkes, USA
Attendance:
77.557
Eric Wynalda struck a spectacular free-kick as the hosts started with
an entertaining draw in Detroit. Wynalda sent the crowd wild when he
curled the ball in off from 30 yards on the stroke of half-time.
Switzerland always looked the more accomplished side and Georges Brey
gave them a 40th minute lead with another free-kick.
Both sides had their chances in the firste World Cup tie played under
aroof and the USA showed they could make progress.
|
397.5 | Italy-Eire 0-1 | COPCLU::SIIG | Great Dane at Large | Sun Jun 19 1994 02:23 | 19 |
| Goal:
0-1 Ray Houghton ('12)
Warnings:
Terry Phelan, Eire
Tommy Coyne, Eire
Denis Irwin, Eire
Attendance:
75.338
Ray Houghton scored with a 30-yard thunderbolt after just 11 minutes to
earn the Republic a memorable victory over Italy in New York.
Houghton intercepted an attempted clearance by Franco Baresi and drove
the ball over the woefully out-of-position Gianluca Pagliuca.
John Sheridan had a great chance to increase the Irish lead on 71
minutes, but his efforts hit the bar.
|
397.6 | Colombia-Romania 1-3 | COPCLU::SIIG | Great Dane at Large | Sun Jun 19 1994 03:55 | 27 |
| Goals:
0-1 Florin Raducioiu ('15)
0-2 Gheorghe Hagi ('34)
1-2 Adolfo Valencia ('43)
1-3 Florin Raducioiu ('89)
Warnings:
Luis Herrera, Colombia
Florin Raducioiu, Romania
Carlos Valderrama, Colombia
Leonel Alvarez, Colombia
Attendance:
91.200
The Game:
Romania upset the title hopes of the highly-fancied Colombians with a
superb perfomance in Los Angeles.
Both sides gave a dazzling display but the Eastern Europeans produced
three killer punches on the break to steal the points.
Florin Raducioiu hit opportunist goals after 15 and 89 minutes and the
brilliant Gheorghe Hagi scored a spectacular cross-shot on 34 mins.
All the colombians had to show for their fluent game was a 43rd minute
header from Adolfo Valencia.

397.9 | Ranking sheet. | SUBURB::FIXEDASSETS | Derek Roodenberg, Dutch at heart | Mon Jun 20 1994 12:27 | 14 |
| If anyone is interested I have written a spreadsheet on Excel that will
keep list all the groups and the results. (Provided you enter them!) It
will even predict the second round listing after every team has played
at least one game. (The third places are a bit dodgy though, they might
have to be manually entered). It can be found at:
PCBOOT::DISK$PC_USERS:[USERS.LAWI]WCUP2.XLS
MACRO1.XLM
The macro needs to be copied as well and is run by pressing CTRL-Z.
This will update the scores you have entered and order the teams in
their groups.

have created, but there seems to be a file protection violation... can you
re-set the protection, so I can copy the files?

397.18 | 2 points, it should have been 4. | SUBURB::FIXEDASSETS | Derek Roodenberg, Dutch at heart | Wed Jun 22 1994 10:56 | 17 |
| I am afraid a little bug escaped my attention when creating the
spreadsheet. If you copy it again it will run correctly. (BTW I am
Dutch so this was a terrible mistake!!) All you need to do to run the
macro is open it like you would a spreadsheet and then stick the actual
spreadsheet over the top. CTRL-Z will then update everything.
From today onwards all teams have played one game. This means the
places for the 2nd round as they stand at the moment are showing.
Italy is not through !!as it stands!!
I have found out why there was a problem with the protection
violations. Everytime I update the spreadsheet with the scores it
resets itself to no access. Now I know I will reset the protection so
the sheet can be copied. If you get a message try again a few minutes
later and it will work.

| No. The offense and part of the mid-field of the swiss team plays
with prominent success in the german Bundesliga. So, that part of the
swiss team is world-class. The tie with them was a big success for
the US team. The only (negative) surprize in that group is Colombia,
so far.
Also, I hear that the african teams are 'surprizingly' good. That is
wrong, too. Many of them kick a*s on the junior level since years, they
have top players in the french and german leagues since years. It is
just a matter of time when they get very good teams together. The
time may have come now. No surprize.

| I'm delighted that the USA won in light of the fact that this is really turning
out to be a very good World Cup and it will add that bit of interest now that it
looks like they'll progress to the second phase. I didn't see the game so can
someone give a quick review. The only thing is that Colombia will be like a
wounded lion comming out to play Switzerland. That should be a game to watch.
Well done Switzerland. Saw the game live yesterday evening and reckon that it
was one of the best games so far. Great entertaining stuff !

397.25 | USA 2 Colombia 1 | TRUCKS::SANT | network partner exited | Thu Jun 23 1994 10:50 | 17 |
|
USA played well and fully deserved the win. Lalas had a perfectly
good goal disallowed for offside that would have made it 2-0 just
before they did anyway. Colombia were poor, vastly over-rated and
tried to pass the ball into the net. Their goal came in injury
time. The US defence haeld them comfortably on the edge of the box
for most of the second half.
Moment of the match was Balboa trying a bicycle kick following a
corner. He hit it so well that neither the goalkeeper nor the
defender on the line by the post even moved! If it had been a foot
to the right it would have taken the defender through the back of
the net - unfortunately, it shave the wrong side of the upright.
Possibly the cleanest strike of this kind I've ever seen. You'll
see this moment repeated ad infinitum over the next three weeks...
Andy.

favorite of mine, due to an inside tip from a local waitress. Colombia
are no push over, the US have done VERY well to beat them.
The Colombia attack were just as wishy-washie against Romania, they
seem to get the ball into the box and then .... nothing... its a shame
that carlos waldamena (sp?) is playing for them, because he really does
have talent

| The bloke in the Columbian side with the BIG hair is a total waste of
space. I have never seen a player with so much hype play so badly. Just
about every pass he plays either goes out or straight to the opposition.
He's afraid to have a shot at goal and loses the ball every time he
gets it. His only good point is his hair, which means I can recognise
when Columbia are about to lose the ball.
Well done USA. Harkes is having a stormer so far.

They can still get third place (whivh may be good enough) if USA beat
Rumania and Columbia beat Switzerland. Assuming USA won 1-0, then Columbia
would need a 3-0 win to be equal on points and goal difference with
Rumania... (don't know what they do in those cases, though?)

| Great result for the U.S.
I intended to watch 'til time, expecting the Columbians to be up by 2/3 but it
was so well balanced, that I wouldn't have been able to sleep so I stayed up for
the rest. I was glad I did, Until I woke up this afternoon (In fact I'm still
asleep :-)
The states played a very disciplined game, defending in numbers, and also as a
team. They had a couple of scares ( defender knocking against his own post) but
were very solid, and countering the Columbians tactics just about every time.
The first goal was unfortunate, but with the way Cordoba was playing in goal, I
think Stewart would have put Harkes' cross away had the defender not done so.
The second goal was shear class.
Balboa's effort was superb, Even the bicycle kick maestro Hugo Sanchez couldn't
have hit that one any better (If only they'd increased the size of the goals ;-)
You can tell that the Columbian's are a good side, however, they've just run out
of ideas for this World Cup. Valderrama has been a waste of space so far, no
incisive defense splitting passes, just piddly 5yard 1-2s which he invariably
loses.
re: equal on pts and GD. Wouldn't they draw lots, like the last world Cup.

| Thanks. I didn't miss that point.
It won't surprise me if there's something else behind that simple
threat. The first thing comes to my mind is - cocane gangsters and
gambling.
Any experienced soccer fan would be surprised by the unusual response
of the Columbia players after 1:0 , 2:0....in the 2 previous matches.

Yes! it was Bolivia vs South Korea...
I watched it on UNIVISION to hear Andres Cantor Yell
GGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!
for about 35 seconds.... but no luck! I was very surprised at the
level of bias on the part of the other guy! he kept on saying that
everything Korea did was bad.... and everything Bolivia did was good!
Every foul from the Korean deserved a red card.... but when the
Bolivian fouled... well, that was a legal tackle and..... it looked
like from the front... and.... well you know......

Are you serious? - even when the US are playing?
If this is true, then I don't know whether I should be impressed or
disappointed.
I don't think I've ever heard truely unbiased commentary.
Although I've only heard commentary in England, Ireland, Germany and
France. ALL have been biased, some worse than others.
Personally, I don't mind this if either :-
1. I'm supporting the country who is being praised.
or
2. I'm supporting the country who is winning, but being slagged off by
the commentator.

Here (in Holland) it's the other way around. The dutch commentators are
always putting the dutch team down. Even when they are playing well,
they can *always* find something to complain about.
I guess it's just that they expect our team (with many *very* good
players, but a bit too many disappointing results) to do better than
they are doing, always.
About the Columbian team: They got death-threaths(sp?) from their own
country!!!
About Switzerland. They certainly *do* have a good team. They haven't
lost a game in 19 games. Yes, you saw it right. They either won or drew
their last 19 games. Even some good teams in those 19 too.
I'm not sure, but I thought Italy, Germany, Rumania, Bulgaria and some
others. Well, those last two teams may not be playing well this WC, but
normally, they play good football.

397.53 | A Midsummer Night's Dream | BCFI::LIDEN | | Sun Jun 26 1994 14:11 | 30 |
| Last Friday was Midsummer Eve in Sweden.
Everyone is off work and you celebrate with parties eating herring and
drinking akvavit (vodka).
So well prepared the Swedish nation sat down to see Sweden's first WC win
in 20 years.
And we got it. And very convincingly as well. Dahlin's header in the 82nd
minute was a cracker. One of the best goals so far in the tournament.
Brolin who was playing like a zoombie against Cameroon was playing very
well as a link in between midfield and attack. Rumours have been on for a
while that Cruyff wants to swap him against Stoichov (Parma - Barca).
Dahlin was super both in attack and defense. I hope a good club in Italy
or Spain will come in and overbid Everton and Mnchengladbach. I do not
think he fits that well into English football, even if I am a Liverpool
fan myself.
Daaaaaaahhhlllllliiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn!!
Now it looks like Holland - Sweden in Dallas in the eighths.
Holland has not been convincing this far so I have good hopes.

played well again for the first time since years. Too bad the Belgians

Well, beating Morroco is not impossible, and we should succeed in that.
About the people in 383, those Belgians are just happy that they won,

players receive red and yellow cards in the second round ?

| It's very simple.. the team that looses the game, will watch the world
cup on TV. If a game is tied in regulation, there will be 2-15 minutes
overtime periods.. if still tied, they go to 5 penalty shots per team,
alternating between shots. Yellow card do not carry over, but I think
red cards still give a 2 game suspention.. (i'm not too sure about
the last one..)

397.64 | Second round rules... | SWETSC::MELKE | Mats Melke, Stockholm | Thu Jun 30 1994 16:33 | 27 |
| re .62
No ties are allowed in the second round. If there is a tie after 2*45
minutes, there will be 2*15 minutes overtime. If it is still a tie
after that, there will be penalty shootout. The referee wants 5 names
from each team that will do the penalties. These players will have to
be in the middle circle while the shootout is taking place, so that
no substitutions of the players can take place during the shootout.
If there is still a tie after 5 penalties for each team, then their
will be one penalty each for the teams until one team outscores the
other. It is not allowed for a player to do more than one of the
penalties until all the players that played the last minute of the
game has done one penalty each, including the goalie.
Note also that sudden death is not used during overtime. The teams will
play 2*15 minutes even if there is a score.
Good luck against Brazil, I'm sure it's going to be a very entertaining
game. The key thing for the USA is probably to stop Dunga and Silva
from reaching Rai and Zinho in midfield passing. Also, Jorginho and
Leonardo, the left- and rightwing defenders like to move high up in the
field. When they do, you need to steal the ball and shoot a long pass
along the sideline to quick Stewart and Wynalda. Up runs Lalas and puts
a header in the net. Easy huh? ;-)

Personally I think penalty shoot outs are very exciting and require
skill as well as nerve.
FIFA are changing rules too frequently for my liking, football has
been around a long time, why try and fix something that`s not
broken?
By the way,I feel football has benefitted from the pass back rule.
