373.1 | Perhaps a change of club would help ... | BERN01::BOLGER | Jerry Bolger. | Mon May 02 1994 15:53 | 9 |
| Ray,
I'll dig out the phone number for the Manchester United supporters
club when I get home this evening. Join them, and you won't have to
worry about mid-table mediocrity ever again ;-)
Yours helpfully,
Jerry.

I always thought that the incentive was next year's contract, bonus,
place in the first team, etc.
Luckily, my team is not involved in mid-table end of season games.
We've been relegated 8-((

373.3 | Closed for Summer? | MSAM00::ROBERTLIM | rock round the locks | Tue May 03 1994 04:23 | 27 |
| This was forecasted many years ago - when the League will be dominated
by few teams with deep pockets - ManU, Blackburn, Liverpool, etc
These are teams with abilities to have a strong squad of players and
keep them!
Sorry to say that there is no end in sight. Just like the rich getting
richer! There are teams who are considering to build or buy players so
that they can stay afloat then there are also teams that can spend to
increase their strength. Milan in Italy is a good example.
Would ManU would have been in the situation today if they did not have
the financial resources? Support from paying fans count although
I do not think that the gate collections will be sufficient. Likewise
if the fans do not turn up in their thousands would there be sponsors?
"Tis a vicious circle.
I have watch many meaningless matches before. There is no emotion nor
urgency. Maybe should have close the stadium for summer! I am tempted
to suggest that the entrance be reduced e.g. 2 for 1 or a whole family
for a certain price. These may bring back the supporters or cultivate
a following BUT would those clubs survive on the gate collections
during that period?
Maybe there should be a tournament organised amongst middle-table clubs
(how do we define them?) for a place in Europe? Say, a mid-table teams
play-off for a spot in Europe.

373.4 | financial reward incentive not enough then? | MASALA::ISUTHERLAND | I'll be forever blue... | Tue May 03 1994 09:38 | 5 |

I thought the Premiership clubs were financially rewarded for their
league placings?
Hardly meaningless if it's worth an extra few grand for finishing 11th
as opposed to 12th!

According to Sky last night, if Coventry finish one place up (11th I
think), they get an extra 70 grand.

| Jon,
You misunderstood what the commentator was saying, although how he got
wind of that story I'll never know ! What he was actually referring
to was the 70,000 STG per player bonus that Coventry were on for a win
last night. Apparently, some rich benefactor stepped in late yesterday
afternoon. (Rumours have it that Jack Walker is devastated that he was
outbid !!! ;-)))))

373.9 | Leeds Jealousy:- They want to be as good as Coventry ! | BERN01::BOLGER | Jerry Bolger. | Tue May 03 1994 11:41 | 10 |
| Looking at their performance last night I (i.e. ManU) wouldn't like to
heve been entertaining Coventry on Sunday, needing three points. They
played a lot of good football last night, and didn't seem to have any
motivation problems. I still reckon, however, that we'll do the business
and show the form that won us the Premiership.
Jerry.
P.S. Has anyone else (except you, Andy) noticed how much I've been
saying "We" and "Us" since "we" won "our" second title on the trot ;-)

373.11 | We need more Uefa places! | UPROAR::LEMP | Live slow, die young | Tue May 03 1994 14:32 | 10 |
| I heard the figure of 57,000 for each place in the Premiership. I think
the best incentive is European football and when (if) we get more Uefa
places then the top five or so places would be relevent which would
increase competition further down the table than at the moment. The
First Division was a good example this season. With 6 places to go for
the competition has been really tight with 8 or so still in with a
shout of a play-off place.

| Does anyone know for sure whether the Premiership will have another
team in Europe if Arsenal win tonight?...I'd fancy Blackburn and
Newcastle to go a long way in next years UEFA Cup....both of their
first teams are predominantly English so there won't need to be much
chopping and changing, unlike ManU who will have to totally change
their team and probably their formation....same goes for Aston Villa,
not enough English nationals....

| According to the Guardian... Newcastle will have to wait until July 18th.
It all depends on whether the U.N. decide to continue with the sanctions
against the former Yugoslavia. If they do then UEFA will support said
sanctions and it looks likely that the English and Romanian Leagues will
be given an additional slot in the UEFA Cup.

Stuart, strictly speaking, the answer to Ray's question is "YES".
The Premiership will definitely have another team in Europe next year
if Arsenal win tonight.
That team will of course be Arsenal! 8-)

It doesn't matter who wins the F.A as far as who goes to Europe,
Chelsea are now already in Europe as Man-u won the league. So if
the Arse win tonight both teams will take part in the cup winners
cup next year.

373.20 | is this it?? | UPROAR::LEMP | Live slow, die young | Wed May 04 1994 15:01 | 16 |
| From what I've heard and seen in this note it seems that England have
the possibility of an extra Uefa cup place by two possible routes.
The sanctions against countries in the former Yugoslavia continues and
England are offered an extra place in *next* years competition (to
literally make the numbers up). This is interesting to Newcastle at the
moment as they would benefit.
If Arsenal win the CWC tonight English sides would be given an extra
qualifying place which teams would compete for in next seasons
Premiership. This is of no interest to anyone this season.
Would the "sanctions" route only give us a slot for this season??
Paul.
