367.0. "The best goal ever scored" by IRNBRU::HOWARD (vamos a la playa) Tue Apr 19 1994 17:51

I'm surprised that I didn't find this in here already so here goes. As the note
title suggests, who scored, in your ever so humble opinion, the best ever goal.
I think the best goals are scored in high pressure situations, against high
quality teams when it is really needed, for example Archie Gemmill's goal
against Holland, Argentina '78 World Cup Finals, when Scotland needed to win by
3 goals to qualify. Or Ricky Villa's goal for Spurs in the 1981 FA Cup Final
against Man City, or Maradona's second goal against England in WC quarter final
1986. I think that these goals stand out more than just a `flash in the pan'
piece of skill against inferior opposition in an ordinary league game or
whatever. I would find it hard to pick just one so here's some of my
favourites in no particular order.

1978	Archie Gemmill, Scotland v Holland - World Cup Finals
1981	Ricardo Villa, Spurs v Man City - FA Cup Final
1986	Maradona, Argentina v England - WC quarter final
1988	Ronnie Whelan, Republic of Ireland v Russia - EC finals
1993	jimmy Quinn, Northern Ireland v Republic of Ireland - WC qualifier

If you had to pin me down on this, I would say Whelan's goal was the best of
the lot, but then again, I would say that, being from Dublin....

Perhaps I could compile some sort of league table after about 200 replies or
so, to find the fans favourite, just to be democratic.

Ray....

Believe it or not one of the best goals I`ve ever seen was by Justin
Fashanu against Liverpool about ten years ago.It actually won the
goal of the season competition run by Sportsnight.

From what I remember Fashanu caught the ball on his chest and turned
and volleyed the ball into the top corner past a helpless Ray Clemence.

Matt Le Tisier has scored a couple of crackers this season too.

Well Neil Cossey's famous last minute own goal sticks in my memory... and to
beat Cliff - I once scored from the half way line, playing for Harlow Town's
youth team (in the dim & distant past!)... now a few unkind comments were made
that it was a clearance and that the keeper was cr*p... but of course, none
of this was true ;-)

My vote goes to Di Cannio, this year, playing for Napoli against Milan...
actually his run afterwards was almost better than the goal!

I'll second Cossey's goal. That DIDCOCK two notes ago can't be Cliff
can it, I'm trying hard but I can't honestly remember him ever heading the
ball. The best goal has to be Michael Gilkes outside of the left foot past
Les Sealey in the 1988 Simod Cup Final.

Cast your minds back to the days of long sideburns and numbered socks
(before anyone asks, I'm only 32)...

    In no particular order:

    - Eddie Gray, Leeds vs. Burnley (late 60s?)
Took possession near the left corner flag and dribbled past SIX
Burnley defenders, using every trick in the book, before slotting the
    ball home.

    - George Best, Man. Utd vs. Sheff Utd. (early 70s)
Stopped dead with the ball outside the opposing penalty area (cardinal
sin), then suddenly took off like a greyhound, outflanked the Sheff
Utd. defence for sheer speed, and hammered in a right-footer off the
    far post.

    - Brian Flynn, Wales vs. Scotland (c.1980)
Brilliant team goal - mesmerizing interpassing to leave Flynn right in
front of goal - couldn't miss!

    - Peter Lorimer, Leeds vs. Chelsea (late 60s)
A scissors kick from OUTSIDE the area (!) - I had to wait for the
action replay to even see the ball!

    - Clive Woods, Ipswich vs. Leeds (F.A. Cup semi-final [?], c.1978)
Curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

    - Diego Maradona, Naples vs. Lazio (c.1984)
Aerial 1-2 with Bertoni, then a volley in off the far post.

    - Ray Kennedy, Liverpool vs. Bristol City, (late 70s?)
Series of perfect one touch passes, followed by a half-volley into the
top corner from the edge of the box - no defence could have done
    anything about it.

    - The Maradona goal vs. England
    No description necessary!

For best goal under pressure, I'll have to second Van Bastens goal in
    the '88 EC-finale against Russia.

    Other great goals:
Van Basten in his Ajax period against FC Den Bosch.
I don't know the english term, but the Germans call it a
'fall-ruck-ziehe' from a right-corner, in the left corner of the 16
metre area in the right cross of the goal(with cross I mean the point
where the bar meets the post).

Or what about Stefan Petterssons goal for Ajax against FC Twente last
weekend. About 35 yards, from 5 metres from the side of the field.
With his right foot in the left cross of the goal (for cross, see
    previous description)

    Hi Luis,

I'm sure if some of our learned colleagues were to try Portugese,
    you'ld have some fun !!!

If you're interested, you could say:

"He hit it with the heel of his right foot..."
    or

"He backheeled it with his right foot...".

Backside is usually used in reference to one's bum (i.e. you sit on it
    a lot ;-) ).

    Jerry.

P.S. Re: sorry for my bad English :

Plenty of our "English-Speaking" colleagues have been known to use
rather dubious grammar and sentence constructs in their (or is it
"there", or perhaps "they're", for example) notes. At least you have a
    valid excuse ;-)

I suppose if I'd have to choose the best goal at the best moment
it would have to be Michael Thomas's goal against Liverpool in
the 89th minute that made the score 2-0 and gave Arsenal the title. A
moment which I hated as it was at the beginning of my holiday and
    ruined the whole bloody thing.
For most classy goal, I'd say John Barnse's against Brazil. Mainly
for giving them a taste of their own medicine, and because I'm very

Davie Cooper's goal against the yahoos in the 1979 Dryburgh Cup Final
has to rate as one of the best individual goals of all time.
From the corner of the 18 yard box he controlled the ball on his chest,
chipped 3 defenders,(one of them twice),then the 'keeper without the
ball touching the ground.I don't think this goal has been shown on tv
but it is on the "super Cooper" vid.

Sandy Jardine also scored a corker that day.

But i must agree with a previous noter about Carlos Alberto's World
Cup Final goal being the best ever. That's what i call total football.
367.32Mick Mahoney super goalie!BRUMMY::CLARKSONFri Apr 29 1994 13:4822
I agree with -1, the build up to Carlos Albertos goal in '70 made it
surely one of the best ever... Pele stopping it and slipping it right
into his path for a scorching drive.

Puskas' goal in the 8-1 thrashing of England was also supposed to be
pretty special - but i don't suppose any of us saw it live!

Ronald Kooman has also scored some pretty good goals for Barcelona in
this years Champions Cup (he loves that top right corner doesn't he!

Or, for a real classic, how about... Gary Sprake of Leeds' throw into
his own net in front of the kop at Liverpool !!

The best goal I have seen live was Johnny Rep for Bastia against
Newcastle in the UEFA cup in 77 or 78 - He received it wide on the
left, shimmyed past a defender and sent a curler into the top right
hand corner past Mick Mahoney's (Mick Mahoney, Super goalie tra la la

Here's my vote for the best goals that I have ever seen.

1st.
Ronnie Whelan's cracker against Russia in the 1988 Euro c'ships. What a
goal? Mick McCarthy takes a throw from the left hand side of the pitch. The
ball comes to Ronnie as he winds up and volleys the ball into the top corner of
the net to leave Dasaev helpless.

2nd.
John Aldridge's goal for Liverpool against Everton in the 1989 FA cup final.
The game was just four minutes old and Aldo hadn't got a touch. In the Liverpool
half, Nicol played a one-two with Beardsley before releasing a perfect ball
down the right hand side where McMahon was galloping into space. Macca goes
forward and cuts the ball back to Aldo who with his first touch leaves Nev
helpless.

3rd.
Van Bastern's cracker against Russia in the 1988 EC.

4th.
Maradona's second goal against England in the 1986 WC.

5th.
John Barnes against Brazil in 1984.

If you read the base note you would see what type of goals the base
noter is meaning....not flash in the pan skill but players performing
and doing it at the highest level.....I'm afraid Mr McCoist does not
enter into that category neither does Mr Cooper come to think of it.
It's the usual blinkered view, i.e. Dalglish never performed in a
Scotland shirt......no mention of the crap huns that have played for
years......but when it boils down to it, Dalglish scored some cracking
goals for Scotland.....have McCoist and Cooper ??? John Collins now

It was back in the late '60s, Santos against Lazio in an exhibition in Jersey
City, New Jersey (US).

Pele was getting chopped down every time he came near the ball, so it looked as
if scoring was out of the question. After one of the numerous fouls, Santos was
awarded a direct from about 40 yards, near the corner of the box. Lazio set up
a wall of about 6 men. As Pele approached the ball he must have thrown a
magnificent fake, because the whole wall jumped in unison and Pele screamed a
grass-burner under the wall into the open end of the goal.

The general reaction was: how did he do it?

I haven't enjoyed a night of T.V so much in a long time.

The "Battle of Santiago" made Cantona's tackles look like tickles.
The documentary on why it is the greatest game in the world, was fantastic. It
highlighted every reason why we love the game.

Quite a few footballers described scoring a goal as better than sex , with the
exception of Lee Chapman (which I found a bit strange).

A great night overall anyway!!!!!!!

Ray,

It was a complete fluke. He was simply trying to stop the ball going into
touch due to the terrible overhit cross and by pure change it went into the
net. Now Waddle's goal, that was a cracker.
