358.0. "English Schoolboy Football" by JOKUR::BOICE (When in doubt, do it.) Tue Mar 15 1994 19:28

I'd like to get an idea of the competitive level of an English schoolboy
BU14 team, Hertfordshire Schools, from Waterford, England. I realize this
is a shot-in-the-dark type request, but what better place is there to
ask...? Does anyone follow schoolboy football? Are these boys playing
schoolboy football because they're unable to play at a higher level? My
son's team will be playing against this team in a few weeks in the Dallas Cup.

Are you talking about an Under 14's Herts Schools County Team?

These players would then be the best players from the various schools
in the County. A Herts team would be pretty good it would be drawing
in players from the Watford, Hemel area, you can count on it being
    quite a good team!

They'd still be school kids though and unless they're really good
unlikely to have signed 'forms' with the big Club teams yet.

Sorry, I only have the team's name and where they're based, which I
    posted originally.

I find it interesting how my question seems to languish here, with
what seems like very little knowledge or interest of English youth
football. The focus in the US is very much around youth football,
while there is little interest as yet of the professional level.
    Just an observation.
358.3Just as well they're not scousers...SHIPS::MACDONALD_JFri Mar 18 1994 16:5811
There are two possibilities I guess but in any case the town must be
Watford and not Waterford. The team could be the Watford FC youth team
but that's doubtful as these teams are not usually designated U14. So,
more probably it'll be the Hertfordshire County U14 schools team
although when I was a lad the county teams were only at U15 and U19
level. Assuming it's the latter then they'll be as good a standard as
any non national team of that age in the world. Mind you, that part of
England is not famous for producing good footballers.... now if it was
Northumbria boys or Merseyside boys you'd have no chance (-:
