what has happened to the cards ?? We got a good hiding at Dover over the bank
holiday ( 5-0 ).
Is Clive "fat man" Walker really playing for Woking this year ?
What is the kit like this year ? have they ditched the "pretty pink" shirts yet.
re.Tim Buzaglo,he has gone to play for Marlow this year, injuries permitting.
I think I'll give the hotline a call to here Geoff Chapples excuses for the

like being Enfield.
The Saints have a new manager with Mitch retiring for the second time

Vauxhall Conference action...
Dover has smashed the transfer record between non league clubs by
paying 50,000 for Farnbroughs David Leworthy. Leworthy was the
conference top scorer last season with 32. Not bad for a midfielder.
Malcolm Cosby, former Sunderland boss has joined Gateshead as coach.
In 1992 he guided Sunderland to the FA cup final.
Derek Statham, former West Brom and England defender has joined Telford
United. The Telford boss - Gerry Daley has drafted in nine new players
for the new season, including Mark Whitehouse from Bromsgrove- the
second top scorer last season with 23. Also joining as assistant
manager is old Scotland star Kenny Burns, the former Forest and
Birmingham player showed 20 times for Scotland between 74 and 81.
The existing manager Gerry Daley played 47 times for Eire.
Dagenham And Redbridge were made bookies faves to win the conference
and join the top flight atthe start of the season priced at 7-2.
Halifax are second faves at 4-1 with Yeovil at 6-1. The Cards ( Woking)
are at 12-1 along with Bromsgrove, Kettering and Slough.
Southport have completed 180,000 of improvements to the Haigh Avenue
ground and say that its the best the ground has ever been. A new 1000
seater covered stand and facilities for the disabled were part of
extensive refurbishment. Sounds better than Everton.
Former eltic striker Frank Bunn is back at Stalybridge, the information
is confusing as it goes on to say that Frank is also free to continue
his Celtic career. Hardly as choice in my eyes.
Tony Hemmings of Northwich Victoria completed successful trial with
Dundee, which should see him move further nort. He also tried out for
West Ham and is being tracked by a number of Scottish and English
premier clubs.

Clem looks a beaut in them. As it goes I can see the shorts getting

| How far into Non-League football are we interested in? I manage a side
in the Jewson League. We have had a poor start and my position must be
under threat having won just once and drawd twice in eight outings so
far. To top that we are out of the League cup. However, I am writing
this on the back of our clubs biggest ever win, 8-1, last Saturday.
I've just about recovered from the hangover.
My Club is Mildenhall Town. WE do not pay our players, and take cars to
away games. The league comprises of two divisions, a premier and a
first. We are in teh first, the club having left village football four
years ago to give this a go. We are installing floodlights, fund
raising permitting, next spring, and had an average l;eage attaendance
last season of 93. I was interviewed by Mellor of 606 last year and he
really belittled us but in good fun.
For interest, Mark Falco & Gary Brooke, ex-Spurs play for Cornard in
this league. Peter Mendham, Ex-Norwich plays for Wroxham. Other notable
names to have playe din the Jewson league in last ten years include,
Brian Talbot, Steve McGavin [Now Colchester], Roger Osborne, John Rigby
[Ex-Cambridge Utd] and Warboys are now managed by Robbie Cooke [Ex
Cambridge. peterborough, and Kettering]
Next year we will qualify for the prelim stages of both the FA VAse &
Cup. Lst year Newmarket Town, our closest neighbours, reached the last
round before the first round proper.
Well I like all non-league so if you are interested I'll keep you
updated?

Anyhow I have been Tom and Dick for the past week so my input has been

One thing of of note from the conference is that Halifax have hit the

and six past Telford.
Other information just from the teleprinter is that Gary Withall has
been signed by Spooner United for 10 pounds !. Gary leaves the Drunken

where he is trying out for Go Ahead Eagles and then trying out in the

"We done great" Mark Goldsack Manager of victorious Mildenhall Town
after beating Hadleigh away, their first defeat of the season.
As stated I manage Mildenhall and we pay nout. I changed the side for
last Saturday after a lack lustre performance in a home draw with
Swaffham.
Before the game Hadleigh paraded their new "contract" player Simon
Lillet. A goalkeeper signed from Chelsea, [Apparantly released last
month!], for a ten grand contract over two years. Not bad for
non-league player. Anyhow, the big party was set for Hadleigh to wipe
the floor with lowly Mildenhall and celebrate this "great" signing.
The game start with a near miss from Davis the Hadleigh C/F then a
twenty yarder that skimmed th bar from hadleigh winger Paul Keys. From
the goal kick the 'hall" keeper played it short to the fulback. In
field to the m/f, out to the wide man, into the feet of the c/f who
flicked it up, and truned in one movement and volleyed home a dipping
lob from approx 35yards. The Hadleigh keeper was stunned, the crowd of
300+ slient whilst I banged me head on the dug out roof jumping for
joy.
We held out til half time and turned round minus Pearson our goal
scorer, who's been crocked just before half time. Basically, it was
like the allamoe [sp?] with Davie Crocket. Our Defense were superb, and
our keeper outstanding. Indeed on the break we could have scored more
but what a great result.
Before Saturday the record for the two teams this season were

minutes and we feared the worse. 3 goals in the last 20 gave The Cards
the three points and moved them up to 8th in the GMV.
3rd division here we go.

Gary,
The way the 'Bridge' played on Saturday they could have beaten either
K's.
The new manager Wragg has now had time to settle, and it seems to be
working.
The fans have let the bridge down by not turning in high numbers, and
those who do were slagging off their own team.
The main goal is to stay up this season. If we are successful in that
area then we can hopefully rebuild and start afresh. I mean at the
start of the seaso we were in the top 10 so it just shows what can
happen(bit like Everton).
Who knows this time next year we may well be fighting for promotion
(no comments mr Green) :-))))

Actually, Diss Town is in Norfolk. I should know - I lived there for 21
years! I went to the first leg of their semi-final, against Atherton
Laburnum Rovers (great name!). Diss won 3-1, then lost the second leg 2-0.
Then they won the replay 2-1. The former Norwich midfielder, Peter
Mendham, plays for them.
The final at Wembley is on Saturday 8th May (the week before the FA Cup
final), and I shall be there!

FA Trophy Semi Final replay.
All square after 210 minutes of football.
Result !! Enfield 0 Woking 3
Hay 2 Steele 1
Woking are going to Wembley for the first time since 1958.
A great 3-0 win last night at Adams Park Wycombe over Graham Roberts
Enfield side has given this great little cup side a visit to the Twin
Towers.
Two Enfield players were sent off. The left back after a lunging two
footer and then dragging a fella to the ground by his shirt. 10
minutes gone and Enfield were visibly rattled.
Graham Roberts was sent of for calling the referee a lying cheating
#$#%$ #$^^^& #%&#%# @#%@% @#$^% wussie ( after he subbed himself ).
A good opening goal after 38 minutes when Scott Steele - ex Airdrie
sent a 35 yard cross field ball into the path of Clive Walker - Ex
Chelsea etc. Walker beat Roberts and put a cross to the near post where
Darren Hay rose above the keeper and two defenders to head the ball
home. Half time 1-0.
Second half Woking took advantage of the extra space as Enfield
pushed forward, Scott Steele slotting home a return ball from
Clive Walker passed Enfields Andy Pape. Enfield went to pieces
Feet and elbows were flying, at one stage there was a 20 man
kerfuffle after another wild lunge by the Enfield No'8. He
consequently went in the book and Roberts was sent off from the dug
out. 10 minutes to go and Darren Hay lobbed the keeper from 20 yards
to make it three.
The referee clearly having seen enough blew full time bang on 45 when
clearly 5 or 6 minutes injury/fighting time should have been played.
Watch for me on the tele boys an girls...

Taunton Town V Diss Town ( I think).
Anyway, Taunton scored early on in the first half and held out, until
the 10th minute of injury time in the second half. It was scandalous.
There was no way that ten minutes were needed for injury time, and if
the referee came from somewhere very close to Diss's town then I would
worry
Surprise Suprise, he did. Strange coincidence that.
I really detest biased refs. Especially those who try to deny it.
Eventually Taunton lost 2 - 1 in extra time.
Rich.
|
317.74 | Diss Town 2 Taunton Town 1 | JONPC1::Button | Jon Button @REO | Mon May 09 1994 15:14 | 48 |
| Rich,
Yes, I was at Wembley on Saturday, supporting my home town, Diss. I was
surprised that they had appointed a referee from Bury St. Edmunds (about 20
miles from Diss), but I think it's a bit much to call him biased. In the
second half, there were quite a few injuries, including treatment to a
Taunton defender which lasted for about five minutes. The trainers also
came on for a couple of other injuries, so the referee was justified in
playing so much injury time
Taunton started really well, having most of the early play. They took the
lead from a corner, Fowler heading in from a flick on. Taunton looked the
hungrier team, but as the first half progressed, Diss gradually took
control. In the second half, Diss had most of the posession, but could not
create a clear cut chance. They forced loads of corners, without making
any of them count. Towards the end, Taunton thought they had scored a
second goal, but it was disallowed (I don't know why).
I looked that it was all over, but in about the 7th minute of injury time,
the Diss striker Stephen Miles broke clear, and was brought down by the
Taunton 'keeper. It was a blatant penalty, and no Taunton players argued
with the decision. The tension mounted as the trainer came on to treat
another player before the penalty could be taken. Eventually, the kick was
taken by Paul Gibbs, who to our relief buried it in the corner. There was
time for only about ten seconds after the restart before the final whistle
went.
Extra time was very tense. Taunton seemed to be the fitter team, but
players from both teams were suffering from cramp. In the third minute of
the second period of extra time, Diss forced a corner. Smith (I think) had
a header cleared off the line, but the rebound fell to Peter Mendhan who
bundled the ball into the net. Taunton made one last effort, but couldn't
get an equaliser.
There were scenes of jubilation among the Diss players and supporters at
the end, but you had to feel sorry for Taunton. They were less than a
minute away from victory.
The crowd was 13450, of which about 8000 were Diss supporters (not bad,
considering the population of Diss is only 6000).
Overall, the quality of the game was good. There were only a couple of bad
tackles throughout the game, and Taunton played a very neat passing game,
despite the awful conditions (it rained throughout the whole game). Diss
were more inclined to hit long balls up to their centre forward, but also
put some good moves together, especially down the left wing.

RUNCORN 1 WOKING 2
Wembley Stadium - Attendance 15818.
A very wet day didn't dampen our enthusiasm, a few lagers went down a
treat but were bursting to get out halfway through the most
uncomortable coach ride Ive had to enjure.
The game was pretty much Runcorn all the way through but they couldn't
capitalise on their possesion and Woking sneaked a first through Derek
Browne aftre 19 mins. I don't think th eref was too impressed with the
celebrations as the Woking team all dived along the hallowed turf on
their bellys... {but it was a damn sight better than Giggs and Ince
doing their girlie dance}. After 30 minutes it was 2 when Darren Hay
slid in at the near post - see above for post goal celebrations.
The Wembley pitch was making a real mess of the game, the players were
tempted to wear wellies for the second half.
Part two was again mostly Runcorn, but still they couldn't break down
the Woking defense, they did manage to hit the cross bar but never
really threatened. After 75 minutes the ref ajudges Gynne Berry to have
handled in the box and as is fashion at Wembley of late awarded a
penalty to the greens. 1-2 with 15 to play.
I was surprised to see Runcorn keep 4 at the back whilst being a goal
short and that was how it stayed. Runcorn 1 Woking 2.

I wonder who could replace Clive Walker when he retires. Hopefully
he's got a couple of years left in him yet.

Woking lost to Cardiff City last night in a pre-season friendly 4-5
Woking went into an early 2-0 lead with Darren Hay and ex-Reading player Tom
Jones scoring the goals.Woking then sat back on their lead and Cardiff came back
with two well worked goals, although the second was clearly offside, much to the
amusement of the Cardiff players.
Cardiff then took the lead just before half-time with a superb goal hit on the
volley from outside the penalty area.
Woking came out with a much changed side in the second half.Clive Walker who was
easily the best player on the pitch in the first-half stayed on the bench, much
to Cardiff's relief.
With Wokings first break Simon Garner ( ex-Wycombe,Blackburn..) scored a good
goal from outside the area, then Wokings other new signing Junior ...... (Never
found out his surname) proceeded to run Cardiff ragged.Eventually his efforts
paid off and it was 4-3.
Cardiff then took off their goalkeeper which was well overdue, this gave them
some confidence at the back and they began to push Woking back.
Wokings defence looked very shakey and they repeatedly relied on very poor
finishing from Cardiff or excellent saves from Lawrence Batty in Wokings goal.
Finally Woking caved in and Cardiff pulled back two more goals.
The crowd was 937 although the announcer at half-time gave the attendance as
nine,three,three,seven.
Woking play a Chelsea XI on Monday 8:00pm kick-off.Ray WIlkins and Glen Hoddle
have confirmed for the Woking side, the Chelsea team has not been confirmed
yet,it is dependant on their results over the weekend.

| Woking will be taking on Coventry tonight, and with any luck will be
able to eek a result, I think a Coventry win has to be more likely
though. No chance of getting tickets for the game, it's a 6,000 sell
out! I think the whole town is either going to be there, or listening
to the local radio tonight. Does anybody know which game 5 Live will
be commentating on?
Well Noel Whelan seems confident enough...
Whelan warns Woking
BY RUSSELL KEMPSON AND PETER BALL
FANTASY often overtakes reality in the FA Cup, yet Steve Thompson, the
Woking midfield player, is trying to retain a sensible perspective for
the third-round replay against Coventry City at Kingfield tonight. He
might have scored the 89th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw at
Highfield Road ten days ago, sparking jubilant scenes among the
non-League club's supporters, but he knows the task ahead is still
formidable.
"Some people are making us favourites, which I find hard to believe,"
Thompson said yesterday. "Just because we forced a replay and have also
got a good record against League clubs, they think we will win. What
they seem to have forgotten is that we play in the Vauxhall Conference
and Coventry are in the Premiership."
Thompson, 34, a former physical training instructor in the RAF, is
finding it easy to keep his feet on the ground. He recently started a
new job in customer liaison for Unigate Dairies in Plymouth, where he
lives, and worked until 8pm last night. He was due to set off early
this morning on the journey to Surrey.
Noel Whelan, the Coventry striker, predicts the end of the road for the
Conference upstarts. The winners play Blackburn Rovers in the fourth
round, with Derby County awaiting in the last 16. "We have to perform
to our true capabilities," Whelan said, "but I don't see any reason why
we can't give them a good pummelling, see off Blackburn and then take
on Derby."
From the times today.

Football-Match abandoned because of hole in pitch
WOKING, England, March 4 (Reuter) - Minor league Woking, who almost knocked
Coventry out of the English F.A. Cup this season, had their home match
against Hayes abandoned after just 20 minutes on Tuesday after a player
nearly fell down a hole in the pitch.
"I have been here 30 years and never seen anything like it in my life. It's
very unfortunate but fortunately no-one was hurt," said Woking chairman
Phil Ledger.
The problem came to light when Woking's Kevan Brown almost tumbled into the
hole and pointed it out to referee Paul Armstrong.
"We had the ground drained this morning and everything looked fine," said
Ledger. "Unfortunately, about 15 minutes into the game a patch of about a
foot square (30 centimetres) gave way and went down three feet (one metre).
"We tried filling it in with dirt and sand but it still had a spongy
surface about three inches (8 cm) down and the referee didn't really have
much choice but to call it off."
