-< Ronnie will be back. >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ronnie is to see a specialist shortly about his injury and I sincerely
hope that he will play again. He is just 30 since October and plenty of
football left in him. What a huge loss he would be to Liverpool and to
the football world in general. He was by far the most accomplished
player of the 80's and that includes Robbo and the fat Mars bar idiot
that disgraced himself in the cup final.
As for the possibility of Roy Keane or Townsand replacing Ronnie,
both of them together wouldn't compensate for Whelan. As for the
possibility of "haircut Thomas" doing the job, forget it.
Ronnie made his league debut against Stoke on 3/4/81 and scored a
goal. Since then, he has collected a host of medals and been a very
influential player for Ireland.......he scored the best goal of the
Euro c'ships in 1988 when he volleyed past Daseav.

-< What a Record. >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool may have suffered a flukey reverse against Peterborough
but in a way I'm glad that the Pool are out of this competition because
the league, F.A. cup and the UEFA cup are the more important ones and
continued involvement in the league cup would have been two muck. Not
to worry, Liverpool are still the most successful side in league cup
history with superb wins in the early eighties and two other final
appearances.
In 1978, Liverpool played Notts For. in the replay final at scum HQ
and went down to a poxy goal.
Next, we had the magnificent four in a row starting off with West Ham.
In the Wembley encounter, Alan Kennedy scored for the Pool and West Ham
equalised with a dubious Stewart penalty. In the replay at OT, the
hammers went ahead against the run of play with a Goddard goal but the
Pool claimed the trophy with classic strikes from Kenny and Hansen.
That game also saw the first appearance of a certain Ian Rush who
started in place of the injured Johnston.
In 1982, Spurs had the cheek to go ahead with an Archibald goal but
the Pool hit back with goals from Whelan and Rushie.
In 1983, it was time to send the Mancs packing. Whiteside got in for
an early poxy goal but Liverpool struck back with goals from Alan
Kennedy and a superb curler from Ronnie. That same day, Gordon McQueen
should have been sent off for a terrible challenge on Grobbs.
The four in a row was completed in 1984 against Everton in a replay
at Maine Rd when a Souness goal sunk the Evertonians. This superb
record in the league will probably never be equalled.
Liverpool in recent years haven't showed the same kind of appetite
for the league cup and the whole credibility of the competition isn't
the same if a team like Liverpool don't give it their full effort. This
has been shown by the presence of lesser teams like Norwich,
Sunderland and Luton in the final. I know Oxford also appeared in and
won the final but they had a superb player leading the attack, the one
and only, ALDO.
Now, that the laague cup is out of the way, the Pool can concentrate on
the league, FA and UEFA treble.

Liverpool 1 (Thomas)
Aston Villla 0
What a great performance by the Pool yesterday and the highlight for me
had to be the return of the great Ronnie Whelan. For a man out so long, he
seemed to cope very well with the pace of the game and he can only get better.
The goal was well worked by Whelan and Barnes and the ball was firmly planted
behind Spink by Thomas. With no disrespect to Portsmouth, Liverpool must fancy
their chances of getting to the final once again and perhaps Ronnie can win his
third cup medal in six years. Hopefully, Ronnie and Barnsie will get some lucky
breaks as regards fitness and with those guys back, the Genoa game should be a
cracker. Imagine how happy I would be if Liverpool won the cup with possibly
the UEFA as well, Leeds to win the league, Forrest the Rumbellows and the Mancs
to get nothing. That would be a dream come true. Just in case I forget........

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did any of you see the great Ronnie in action last night. He came on after
five minutes when O'Leary had to go off injured. After watching him last
night, I realise what Liverpool have been missing for so long. He wasn't
totally fit but that will come with a few games. He was the best player on
the pitch while he was on, very comfortable on the ball, winning tackles,
getting back to defend (something I can't say about the Mars BAR FAT BOY).
I wonder while Souness put him in the team at the weekend. The quicker
he replaces that plonker Stewart (who can't even kick the ball out of his
way), the better it will be for Liverpool. They should also buy back Stan,
Ray & Deano from Villa, Beardsley & Ablett from Everton, Macca from
city and of course Aldo from Tranny.
Once I saw Ronnie limbering up last night, I jumped for joy. The
future looks brighter for Liverpool already.
What I player. What a genius.

-< Profile of Ronnie Whelan. >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How dare anybody run down a player like Ronnie Whelan. He has been the
most successful Irish player ever to play in England as far as trophies are
concerned. In a previous note, Batty, Gazza, Ince and Platt have been
mentioned as being as good as Ronnie. Gazza is a fool, Batty is a thug, Ince
has only figured this season and Platt is just an expensive ordinary
player. How somebody can compare them to Whelan is beyond me.
Ronnie made his debut for Home Farm against Bohs as a sixteen year old in
1978. He was then snapped up by Liverpool and what a coup it proved to be.
He made his debut for Liverpool in a 3-0 win over Stoke in 1981 and scored
one of the goals. Rushie was another youngster that made his entrance into
the team at the same time. At the beginning of 1981-82, Whelan really
established himself in the team picking up his first of six league medals.
That unbelievable season was capped by two goals for the 20 year old in the
League cup final win over Spurs.
1982-83 saw Whelan get another League medal and scored a beautiful goal
to deny the Mancs the league cup final.
1983-84 saw Whelan inspire Liverpool to an unbelievable three trophies. He
won his third league medal in a row. He also won his third league cup
medal in a row after Liverpool beat Everton and he was part of the Liverpool
team that won the European cup for the fourth time by beating Roma in their
own back yard. Whelan was also an established international at this stage.
1985-86 saw Whelan realise what the Batties, Gazza's, Incies & Platties
can only dream of. He won the highly elusive league and cup double,
dominating the midfield as Liverpool came from behind to take 34 out of a
possible 36 points and he supplied the final ball to Rushie that was to
sink Everton 3-1 in the cup final.
Whelan strangely enough didn't pick up any medals in 1987 but he was back
again in 1988 as he strolled to his fourth league medal, this time joined
by THE GREAT ALDO. His absence was in my opinion the main reason why
Liverpool lost to Wimbledon in the '88 cup final. Alas another double went
astray. Also in 1988, he inspired the Rep. of Ireland as they hammered England
1-0 in Stuttgart. He also left Shilts for dead only to see his shot come off
the crossbar. In the game against Russia, we say a goal the like of which
will never be seen again. From a Mick McCarty throw in, Whelan from 30 yards
out left Dasaev for dead. It was a goal for the world to see what a player
Ireland & Liverpool had.
1988-89 saw Whelan realise another dream. He captained Liverpool as they
beat Everton 3-2 in the cup final. What an honour!. He was also denied another
league and cup double when Arsenal fluked a 2-0 win at Anfield.
1990 saw Whelan get his sixth league medal as Liverpool strolled to success
again for the 18th time, winning an amazing 11 titles since Man. utd. won
their last one in 1967. Unfortunately, Whelan had injury problems during
the world cup and only played against Holland for 30 mins. Although Ireland
did very well, they would have been odds-on to lift the trophy with a fit
Whelan in midfield.
Since then, Whelan has been plagued by injury but I was lucky enough to see
him play for Ireland as they beat Latvia 4-0 as Whelan along with Aldo was the
greatest player on the field.
Wlelan is definately the greatest midfielder that we have seen in the last 10
years and at 31, there is a lot left in him.

previous note on Ronnie but I didn't want to be too long-winded. My admiration
for Whelan is so great that I am thinking of donating a specail topic to
him, similar to the one that I did for THE GREAT ALDO.

Liverpool with 18 wins is definately correct with 11 of those coming in the
last 20 years ( 73, 76, 77, 79, 80, 82, 83, 84, 86, 88 & 90). As far as I
know the Mancs recorded their 8th success this year, winning for the first
time in 26 years.
I'm not really sure about the other two. Anyway it's the above statistic
that really matters.

RE -1,
I'll bet with anyone that no other team will go to Swindon and win
by 5 goals. Liverpool were very good on Saturday and Whelan makes players like
Ince & Keane look like S&*^e.
So don't give me this rubbish about Liverpool not being as good as Utd. or
Villa. The standard for any team to match at the moment is not the winners of
one league campaign last season but the unbelievable standard and
consistency which different Liverpool teams have shown over the last 20 odd
years. Even George Graham & Howard Kendall know more about League success
than Fergie.
This is what I'm talking about in terms of the league in the last 20 years.
