310.8 | Italians in Europe match reports... *Taken without permission from usenet* | KBOMFG::TANNER | U2 are Numbed!!!!!!!!!!! | Thu Sep 16 1993 11:58 | 141 |
| A good day for the Italian sides involved in the European
competitions, with all the teams getting wins. Now, on with the details:
All games played Wednesday, September 15, 1993:
Champions' Cup
First Round - First Leg
Aarau (Switzerland) 0 AC Milan (Italy) 1
Papin 9' (2nd)
The RAI commentator stated that there were only 10 000-12 000 fans in
the stands due to the exorbitant ticket prices for this match.
Apparently, prices averaged about 150 S.Fr, which corresponds to about
135 US$, significantly more than the fans there were used to. At the
10th minute Aarau had a goal called back when their Russian forward
Alexandrov put the ball past the Milan goalkeeper Rossi.
Unfortunately, Alexandrov was offside on the play and the score
remained at 0-0. Milan had a couple of chances with Papin and Massaro,
the later who failed to score on an excellent chance mid-way in the
first half. In the second half, Milan looked more confident and lucid
in their play and finally got on the board nine minutes into the
second half when Papin put in a shot from close range after a pass
from Brian Laudrup. With 5 minutes left in the match Maldini was
injured and was helped off the pitch substituted by Filippo Galli.
Hopefully, Maldini's injury is not serious. Overall, the Swiss side
gave Milan more difficulty than expected with a very tight defense
that stopped numerous offensive opportunities and who also created a
number of scoring chances. Even if Milan scored only one goal, the
away goal should be important for the rossoneri's qualification for
the next round.
Cup Winners' Cup
First Round - First Leg
Lillestrom (Norway) 0 Torino (Italy) 2
Silenzi 25'
Jarni 12' (2nd)
Torino leaves Oslo with a very comfortable lead with 2 very important
away goals in their bid to make it through to the second round.
Silenzi opened the scoring at the 25th minute of the first half and
after Jarni added a second, Silenzi was substituted so that the Torino
forward would be in good shape for Sunday's important Italian league
match away to Parma.
UEFA Cup
First Round - First Leg
Lazio (Italy) 2 Lokomotiv Plovdiv (Bulgaria) 0
Casiraghi 22'
Cravero 10' (2nd)
Casiraghi was the main protagonist in the first half of the match, due
not only to his goal, but also because of a number of plays executed
by himself in conjunction with Signori, even if Casiraghi scored on a
pass from Cravero. Ten minutes into the second half, Lazio added to
their lead when Cravero headed in a free kick taken by Signori. The
Bulgarians played the last 25 minutes with one player short after
Vasev (sp?) was sent off after receiving his second caution of the
match for a reactionary foul on Signori. Lazio had a number of chances
to add to their lead with Signori, Cravero, and Winter, but despite
having control of the match, they failed to score a third goal. A few
minutes later, Doll was sent off for a hard foul, leaving Lazio with
10 players and upon resumption of play, Betekov (sp?) was send off for
the Bulgarians, leaving them with 9 players.
Inter (Italy) 3 Rapid Bucharest (Romania) 1
Bergkamp (pk) 12' Andragi 7' (2nd)
Bergkamp 29' (2nd)
Bergkamp 33' (2nd)
For the Dutch fans out there, both Bergkamp and Jonk started in this
match with Bergkamp teaming up with Schillaci on the attack, and it
was Bergkamp who opened the scoring on a penalty kick, awarded for a
hand ball, which apparently looked involuntary to the reporter, but
not to the German referee. Inter dominated but Rapid played well,
albeit more physically than the nerazzurri, with very dangerous
counter attacks and leaving little space for the Inter players. As the
first half neared its conclusion, Rapid Bucharest started to gain
confidence in their attacks, wanting to take advantage of spaces left
by the Inter side. If Inter looked complacent at the end of the first
half, they came out more aggressively at the start of the second with
Shalimov and Schillaci putting pressure on the Romanian defense. This
did not stop the Romanians from equalizing at the 7th minute of the
second half when an error by the Inter defense, who expected a shot to
got quietly out were surprised when Andragi (sp?) pursued the ball and
headed it past Zenga, who perhaps came off his line too late.
Twenty-two minutes later, Bergkamp, with an apparently beautiful
volley that the goalkeeper did not have a chance to stop, scored
Inter's second goal, but Rapid's earlier away goal dampened the
celebrations in the stands. Inter looked to add to their lead
pressuring the visiting team with their coach Bagnoli on his feet
urging his players on and 4 minutes after their second goal, Bergkamp
scored his and Inter's third goal. The Dutch forward put a chip past
the Romanian goalkeeper after having received the ball from deep
inside the Inter half of the field. So, the 3-1 lead is a comfortable
one for Inter, but it will be a tough game back in Bucharest, so Inter
is not out of the woods yet.
Juventus (Italy) 3 Lokomotiv Moscow (Russia) 0
Baggio 4' (2nd)
Ravanelli 25' (2nd)
Baggio 42' (2nd)
This game was not played in Torino, but in Bologna. During the first
half the Russians played with all their players in their half of the
field trying to defend as best they could, showing little technical
prowess. Baggio put Juventus on the board, on a play that started on a
free kick taken by Conte which eventually made its way to Moeller, who
passed to Baggio, who put the ball in the top corner of the net, away
from the reach of the Russian goalkeeper. Juve continued the pressure
as the second half continued and almost missed scoring their second 10
minutes later with Baggio attempting to score with the same type of
shot that put Juve on the board. Eleven minutes after that
opportunity, Ravanelli scored Juve's second goal after snapping up a
rebound on Baggio's shot on net. Moments later, Ravanelli and Baggio
had the chance to make it 3-0 but a pass to Baggio was anticipated by
the Russian defense and thus a potentially dangerous situation was
stopped. Baggio, with a beautiful play gave Juve their third goal 3
minutes from time when the forward deeked his way through the Russian
box before shooting and putting the ball past the goalkeeper. So
Juventus takes a comfortable lead to Moscow and seems in a good
position to make it to the next round, even if the return leg promises
to be a tough one.
The second leg matches will be played on September 29, 1993. The only
Italian team which has yet to play is Cagliari who will meet Dynamo
Bucharest tomorrow (Thursday).

If this is *significantly* more than they are used to, then what is the average
price of a game over there? $135 would get people a cosy season ticket in many
premiership grounds this year.

to watch a Swiss first division game at Neuchatel Xamax it costs
SFr 10 to stand on the uncovered terraces behind the goals
SFr 14 to stand on the covered terraces at the side of the pitch
SFr 30 to sit in the stands
current conversion rates are (roughly) 2.3 SFr to the pound, 1.5 SFr to the
dollar. All children up to age 14 get in free, anywhere in the ground. The stadia
are well run and in good repair, but not as big as the average English premier
division ground - theres nothing like White Hart Lane, Highbury, the Bridge, etc.
I don't know about season tickets.

Well the table that listed the success rates for countries made very
interesting reading. The English teams could certainly do with
continued involvement as next year they'll still only have two teams in
the UEFA Cup and really need a good couple of years to supplement the
loss of the first year back in Europe when Manchester United won the
Cup Winners Cup. As some of you know the number of teams is calculated
via a 5 year rolling results table. This years results will be the 5th
year back in Europe so results had better be good for the English teams
otherwise they'll be stuck for a few years.
Next year there are 3 countries who will have 4 teams; 5 with 3 teams;
13 with 2 teams and all other countries with just the one team.
The countries...
4: Italy, France, Germany
3: Spain, Belgium, Russia, Portugal, Holland.
2: England, Yugoslavia, Roumania, Scotland, Czech, Turkey, Austria,
Greece, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Bulgaria.
Italy and Germany look good to maintain the full quota but France and
Spain look like swapping places. With Holland and Russia doing disastrously
in the first round it looks as if England should have three teams the
season after next BUT may go back down to 2 after losing the advantage
of Unites'd win a few years back. It might well be up to United to do
well this year to maintain the 3 slots. As for England getting back up
to 4 slots, I can't seriously see 4 teams before the turn of the
century. Norwich and Villa to beat the German and Spanish opponents in
the next round would obviously be a start....
The new Computer table of the best teams in Europe was published
today...
1. AC Milan.
2. AC Parma.
3. Manchester United.
4. Inter Milan.
5. Juventus.
6. Anderlecht.
7. Torino.
8. Spartak Moscow.
9. Werder Bremen.
10 Bordeaux.
All very subjective at this stage but is generally based on current
points gained in the league this season, domestic cup competition and
European results all multiplied by a factor of the 5 year country
strength factor.

Dezzz.

But where are other big names like Ajax, Barcelona, Real Madrid,

Well lokk here Liverpool and Real Madrid are in their respective
league tables. Marseille are not in Europe and are ranked about 50th.
Barcelona lost one of their matches in Europe and Holland has a lower
country ranking (8th I believe ).
As I say it is all very subjective. A prime example would be Eintract
Frankfurt. They are ranked about 35th. Had they won the meaningless
(almost) game in their UEFA 2nd leg then they would be ranked 10th.
Cheers,
Dezzz.

| re .42
Luis,
I don't agree with you concerning the luck of Porto. I saw the match on
TV and got shocked about the behaviour of the Porto players/coach.
Where they were the better footballers, more then once they behaved
like butchers ! The way they went into duels was absolutely despitable.
And when John de Wolf was knocked out by Carlos (?) a red card would
have been the least.....but nothing happened. Looking at the number of
cards ( 5 for Feijenoord and 4 for Porto) you would presume something
else but was absolutely not a reflection of the game. Feijenoord aren't
the sweetest club but this time they kept very calm. And when Bosz got
his red card for talking, I thought that was the limit. How can you, as
referee, pass so many mean fouls and sent someone away for talking ?
After that sentaway Porto got more of the game and scored far after
closing time (94th minute !). And that is no luck ? No, I think that
Porto should have played football because they were the better club.
But after this they should be banned for the season ! Wondering what
the UEFA decides if they look at the pictures......

Did anyone see Benfica's third goal in the last minute of the game
against Sofia? Cor blimey! Some Swedish guy (?) hit it from 25 yards or
so and it was still going up when it slammed into the top corner. If the
net hadn't been there it would have ended up in the Atlantic!
Saw it on Europsort accompanied by the dulcet tones of Archie
McPherson. I used to think this guy knew what he was talking about, now
I'm not even sure he's watching the same game as the rest of us.

The Karlsruhe game was really fun watching. The reporter went crazy!!
4 of the 7 goals were scored by Edgar Schmidt, who only last week survived
a heavy car accident unharmed overturning 4 times. As the reporter said:
"A goal for each overturn". His new nickname is Edgar "looping" Schmidt. :-)
What I found impressive was that after the 3-0 lead at halftime, which
would have been enough to qualify, Karlsruhe didn't step down a gear to
defend the lead, but continued with lovely attacking football. I don't
think many would have expected that from a german team ;-).
The fans kept celebrating the whole night through.

On the way Norwich performed last night none of the other 15 teams

if the manager does his 'homework' as obviosly Graham and Walker did;

re. 65
Ok John,i have to agree with you in one point:both games(Porto and
Roterdam) were not very good examples of how to play football!
When i said that you were very unfair,i was refering to that part when
you said that Porto should be banned for the season! Why?
Things like that(when J.Carlos hit the Feeyenord player)
are, unfortunettly, very common in football. You must agree that he
wouldn`t have done it if he hadn`t a good reason...
I agree that he should have seen the red card but...
The very same happened in Roterdam when F.Couto was on the floor and
Feeyenord number 5 hit him! Then there was a big confusion ,and red
cards?None!
When i said that who laughs ...bla...bla...i was thinking in Feeyenord
players and fans who said that a war was expecting Porto when they
arrived at Roterdam ,and that they would end up the game on knees...
It was nothing personal John!
In fact,i`m a fan of your team.I love your attack football!
You could call me crazy but in Porto they are trying to build up a
school to "make" young players like Ajax do.Hear in Portugal ,Porto is
the team who has the more players in the main team that were made in
the "house".
Oh,another thing: you could be certain that Porto`s quality of football
will increase in this final league.Do you remember the last year game
PSV 0 - 1 PORTO ?That was the really Porto!!!
Cheers,
Luis.
PS-Good luck for Ajax`s career in your league. And also in the European
cup(I don`t like Benfica....).

| re-1 OK Luis, clear to me. Oh yes, I saw that red card in Rotterdam
too! But when I had seen the match in Porto I was really surprised that
nothing was done against it. I said Feijenoord are no sweeties
themselves but I couldn't approve some of Porto's actions....Especially
because they played much better football between these incidents then
Feijenoord. I think by playing as they were doing they blocked
themselves more then Feijenoord.............And they have ofcourse
plenty of time to prove that they can play in the Champions League !
And I think the media tried to make it look like a war before the
match. Here in Holland the Feijenoord players said very clear that they
were not out for fighting. And so it was ; they were tensed but seldom
in a fighting mood.......and van Loen was asking for red !
And probably the media in Portugal were as the dutch trying to present
the match before that it would be a battlefield. The players were wise
enough to stay cool !
I think it's good that Porto is going to put up a Football school as
here Ajax and PSV have. It enables clubs to trace and coach good
players in an early stage. You would wonder if you would see how many
good players Ajax have in its younger teams. But how many will come
trough.........
Well, Luis, perhaps in the future we can watch a game together and
watch a nice game with good football and without fouls ! See you then,
John

We had Ivic in France, during several years, training PSG and

It was a nightmare.. Not that the results were bad, but the

| Peter,
we have 7 players coming from another country but yesterday three of
them were injuried (Van Basten, Laudrup, Boban), one of them (Desailly)
didn't play for UEFA rules. So Papin, Savicevic and Raducioiu have had
the chance to play.
You can understand how is difficult for a trainer to chose among this
kind of players. These are the kind of problems every trainer would like
to have, I know, but they are problems.
Savicevic is a champion, yesterday night he demonstrated it again, but
he don't like to play in the right side of the forward line as Capello
would like. Even yesterday, sometimes he went to midfield. In other
words, he hasn't the tactical discipline that our trainer likes.
I hope he will play more in the future, I would like to see him with
Marco Van Basten.
Ciao

in the world at the moment. The fact that he seems to lack the tactical
discipline to fit in at Milan does nothing to change thi s view. Let's
hope that last night's game is the turning point.
On a slightly different note, I think it has to be said that no Milan
fan ever seems to have a clear idea as to what the basic starting
lineup is. Obviously they do have an extraordinary playing staff, but
whenever they drop a point it can be infuriating to hear their
supporters explain it away by saying: "...but we were without
Raducioiu, Donadoni, Tassotti and Carbone" (or any 4 players chosen at
random).
After all, only eleven can play!

I don't know yet who are the best 24 teams. And in them, the best 8.
But we're really on the way to the real Champion's League. The next step
towards it would be to qualify all best European teams, without even
being champion in their country league.

I believe the 'best' teams are going to be selected by considering how much
money their TV company is providing. So at least the German, Italian, French
(?) and English champions will qualify easily. Interesting that it's assumed
that the English champions will be picked - we aren't supposed to have an
'English' TV company. Tough luck Motherwell!
I wish they would just get on and make it a League - calling it a Cup and then
restricting it to the big names is just a farce.

I couldn't agree more!
UEFA and FIFA are proving themselves to be two of the most scandalous
organizations in the world sporting arena. The early rounds of the
European cup competitions this year have produced umpteen surprises
and, as far as I know, two "thrashings": an English club beating a
Belgian club and a German club defeating a Spanish club. The "minnows"
have for the most part given an excellent account of themselves.
The Italian clubs, generally acknowledged as being the strongest in
Europe, have all struggled to beat against "minor" opposition (Inter
4-3 against a team from Cyprus, Juventus 3-1 against Norwegians, Milan
1-0 against Aarau of Switzerland, Palma *on penalties* against a team
from Israel, etc.). But Berlusconi's TV empire is now the deciding
force in Europe and these countries are now to be banished to
competitions for the "inferior" clubs.
I think it stinks.

>> A red-card offence by Karlsruhe's number 4 went unnoticed.
This match was pretty rough, red_card for the French center forward
after hitting a player right in the face. I agree that the Karlsruhe
should have gone too for that offence. They had the close up camera
right on him when he was about to hit the player in his private
parts, but switched cameras immediately when they noticed what was
about to happen (IMO Very dirty offence and completely unnecessary).
This action was an indication of how much those teams hated each
other. I was surprised how the Italian ref kept so cool. Could it
be that he's used to it from home ;-).
Nevertheless, it was an exciting game with Karlsruhe hitting the
post twice within 60 seconds and a Bordeaux player "clearing" the
ball 1m in front of the Karlsruhe goal! Karlsruhe goalie Oliver Kahn
played brilliantly under the eyes of National coach Berti Vogts. He
fully deserves to go to the US next year. Kirijakow and Edgar Schmidt
were again outstanding, though Kirijakow occasionally was a bit too
egoistic and tried to score himself where a pass would have been
better.

Great game indeed, from one side at least :-(
A lot of errors from the goalies. The first and last goal of Anderlecht
are clear errors from the goalie. One of Bremen goal plus the last one
are also the goalkeeper's fout.
Bremen managed to put the turbo on. Anderlecht didn't follow (in their
legs and in their heads). However, 90 spectacular minutes to watch.

| And Parma pretty much dominated for most of the 120 minutes - they seem
to have the Indian sign over AC Milan. They're a very intelligent team
and are going through a great period of form at the moment. In fact, it
was no surprise to me that they won. The stars for Parma were Zola,
Brolin, Benarrivo and Asprilla (but the whole team played well). The
best player for AC Milan was Desailly.
Only sour note for Parma was the bookings for Minottin (capt.), Di
Chiara and Benarrivo, all of whom will miss the Cup Winners' Cup
quarter final vs. Ajax. So much for having the originally designated
Dutch ref replaced!

Dom are you sure they can't play in the next round???? I didn't think that a
game like that would affect you in the Euro cups if you got booked..
Yea your right about Parma, they will be a team for the future in Italy and
they also have a lot of money backing from the foods company "Parmalat" The
president of Parma owns the company, and the manager of Parma is also one of the
companys managers. Another little pice of info regarding Milan is that they
conceded the first goal in 590 mins of football, and so far this season they
have only conceded 8 league goals in about 22 matches, and I believe Sampdoria
put 3 past them....
Milan are sorely missing the services of Lentini, and Van Basten....

| >Dom are you sure they can't play in the next round???? I didn't think that a
>game like that would affect you in the Euro cups if you got booked..
Well, I watched the game on Italian TV and the commentators seemed more
worried about the possibility of Parma players being banned for the
Ajax match than the outcome of the Milan-Parma game itself! Parma went
into the match with 8 players on one booking, so they were in a risky
situation. They've now lost both 3/4 of their defence including the
captain.
The background to the story is that a Dutch ref had originally been
assigned to this 2nd leg of the Supercup, but UEFA decided to replace
him with a German because they thought he'd be in an embarassing
position, given that Parma were due to play Ajax in the Cup Winners'
Cup (didn't make a lot of difference, did it?!). Parma actually sent a
telegram to the Dutchman *after* the decision had been taken, saying
that they were sorry and would have been quite happy to have him
officiate, etc. Well, if you believe that...
Come to think of it, you're a Liverpool supporter, aren't you? I seem
to recall Liverpool using a Supercup game against Juventus a few years
back to allow a disqualified Kenny Daglish to be elegible to play in a
European Cup quarter final. So I guess they're treated like any other
"international" club game. Same goes for the Intercontinental Cup.

Yep, they'll be a team for the future; they've got just about
everything right. Money talks in Italy (more than anywhere else) and
the reality is that we're more than halfway through the season and the
Serie A table looks very familiar: Milan, Juventus, Parma, Sampdoria,
Lazio, Inter, Napoli, Torino, Roma in the top half - and Lecce,
Cremonese, Udinese, Reggiana, Piacenza and co. trying to avoid
relegation. Moral: if you want to challenge for honours, you'd better
be able to afford three (or more) top class foreigners.
>Milan are sorely missing the services of Lentini, and Van Basten....
More Van Basten than Lentini. So far, Lentini *hasn't* been considered
a success at Milan (partly why they bought Laudrup for this season),
especially considering what they paid for him. He's back now, and can
be excused for not immediately showing top form, but he'll need to get
his act together if he wants to go the U.S. or even if he wants to be
part of the Milan setup next year. Many Milan supporters blame him for
the defeat against Marseille and he was frequently booed last season.
He rarely seems to get to the byline and has acquired an infuriating
habit of curling in harmless crosses with his right foot (Milan play
him on the left wing) that are easy meat for any goalkeeper ;-)

Salzburg through on away goals. :-(
Good luck to Salzburg in the finals, it's time to see a team *not*
Italian win a European Cup :-)
As for the match, Salzburg deserved to win. Well, so did Karlsruhe.
It was one of Karlsruhe's lesser home matches, though. Maybe it was
their problem to be favourites for the first time. The produced one
or the other dangerous situation in the Austrian box, but never could
revive the spirit of their previous home matches. And Krieg's equalizer
was offside, too (from my -TV- perspective).
Willie Schfer, Karlsruhe's coach commented that Salzburg and Karlsruhe
were basically playing the same kind of football. They became successful
through hard work, in a team without stars. That's why the matches were
so close and a bit of luck would be required to go through. They didn't
have it.

| It was a glorious day for our football.
1/4 final: 1. game Vienna :German's newspaper : this s no problem for the great
Eintracht Frankfurt (Frankfurt had much luck , that they had not 3-4
goals in Vienna)
2.- Game in Frankfurt: No chance for Salzburg, they cannot beat any German
team - we have seen, they could
1/2 final: 1. game in Vienna : it was more quiet than before the Frankfurt-game
in German's newspapers and TV. 0:0 in Vienna
2. Game in Karlsruhe: It had been the sam as in Francfurt,
German press: In 15 minutes Salzburg has lost - no chance.
TV: This will be the revenge for Frankfurt - it wasn't.
Schuetterle (KSC) : We plough Salzburg in the first halftime.
There is a great rivality between German and Austria in sport - German's
newspapers often confound Sport with War.
The German trainer Schfer has shown more fairness than Francfurt's Topmoeller,
both games Francfurt-Salzburg has been war and hates!
The games Salzburg - Karlsruhe has been games like Cup-games, but with much
fairness - gratulation to the team of Karlsruhe and his trainer.
Heiko, thank You for thinking, "Krieg's equalizer was offside, too (from my -TV-
perspective)." - but our Number 5 Winklhofer has been more than 1 meter behind
Krieg on the left side.
This was a glory day, but I think neither Karlsruhe than Salzburg has a chance
against Inter (If this isn't true, I wil be lucky) and i'll finish with the
words of Salzburg's coach Otto Baric:
"Sorry, that there is no third German team in the final"

| Dave,
The Austrian are no saints, too - I agree.
The trainer Otto Baric is an emotional croatic, he is very "hor" during the
game (they have tested his heart-rate during the match 120 - 150).
Their is no excuse for his behaviour against Francfurt.(The reason of his
behaviour was , that the Francfurt player said to him "Fuck Your mother"
- this is not o.k. , but no reason Baric' doing - spitting against him)
Question: Have You seen the Austrian Davis Cup match ?
" "so-called" fans behaved during the recent Davis cup match"
"especially after the Austrian Tv presenter claimed that Salzburg were now
an European top team".. the Austrian football is not so bad, as many thinks.
But the Austrian football is not so well as the Austrian TV thinks.
(I am looking this games in the German TVs)
The referees have been good in all games against Karlsruhe and Frankfurt.
Let us Austrian enjoy such days - we have to wait for another 10 years.
(1980 Austria Vienna Cupfinal, 1985 Rapid Vienna, 1994 Austria Salzburg)

after winning against Inter , chances : 20:80)

310.121 | Inter - a Topteam, Salzburg - a good team | VNOTSC::HERIBERT | | Wed Apr 27 1994 09:12 | 47 |
| Austria Salzburg - Inter Mailand 0:1 (0:1)
Goal: Berti (35.)
Yellow,Yellow/red: Bianchi
Yellow: Pfeifenberger,Stadler (both Salzburg)
We have seen a difference between a well playing team as Salzburg and a
international Top Team as Inter Mailand.
Salzburg has been the better team for 80 minutes, only between the 35 and
45 minutes Inter played a very well football.
But what was the difference:
Salzburg had 8 chances , 11 corners and made no goal .
Inter had three chances, 1 corner with this result: 1 goal (35.min) one bar shot
(45 min.)
Salzburg's forwards had been too harmless , without Jurcevic they are not able
to make any goal.
In the beginning of the second halftime Austria Salzburg played very well.
In the 48. min Bianchi had seen yellow/red - but I must say, this decision has
been too hard for excluding the Inter player - it was a harmless foul.
The Danish referee had no difficult play, it has been very fair.
He has only made two mistakes - this yellow/red card against Bianchi and a
yellow card against Pfeifenberger (5.min),a harmless attack against Bergkamp.
After this red card, Inter stands with 10 men in theyr half and played their
well known Catenaccio - one attack in the last 40 minutes.(85. Sosa) - and this
shoot has been very dangerous.
Resumee: Inter has shown, how an international top team is able to win with
only 10 minutes playing well.
As a realistic, you must say, the final is decided - Inter will be Cup-winner.
As an optimistic you can collect facts:
Nobody has given Salzburg any chance after the first games against Lissabon
(0:2),Karlsruhe (0:0) and Frankfurt (1:0) - and all three 2md games have been
better.
Salzburg can not play with Pfeifenberger and Stadler (both forwards)in Mailand,
but they have Feiersinger,Garger (two good defenders),Huetter (best in middle)
and Jurcevic(best forward).

Barcelona could have won this game by 6 or 7 at the end... they controlled
the game the whole time and had about 80% posession play.... The three goals
they scored were gems....
Milan 3-0 Monaco goals by Desailly, Albertini and Massaro....
Milan easily brushed past Monaco even with 10 men for the second half Milan
were in class of their owm.... Again three excellent goals, and instead of
sitting on their 1-0 lead Milan went out and attacked...
The final is in Athens on May 18th... Barca start as slight favourites
mainly because Milan will be missing both Baresi and Costacorta the heart of the
very successfull Milan defence, both are suspended.
I personally will be shouting for Barca, they attractive football which
reminds me a little of the Dutch team of the seventies. Cruyff is a hero in

"I PALI E LE TRAVERSE" (the bar shots)

| Yep, excellent goal by Jonk, but you have to ask how it is possible
that Inter can win the UEFA Cup. To do so, they've beaten Limassol
(Cyprus), Dinamo Bucharest (?), Norwich, Borussia Dortmund, Cagliari
and Salzburg, but I don't think they passed a single round without some
enormous slice of luck.
Quite how they managed to scrape through against B. Dortmund at San
Siro in particular, I shall never know. Certainly, they look one of the
most disjointed teams ever to have won a trophy. In fact, it seems like
a classic case of a team picked by a rich president (to please the
fans), rather than by a manager who knows his football.
Still, Berti looks to have won himself a place in the Italian WC squad.

| Not Inter has won this UEFA Cup - Zenga, luck and Zenga has won it.
It was a fast match, Salzburg was the better team in the 2nd half and had
enough chances to win, but Zenga was too good on this day.
Inter's best phase has been from the 1st to 15th minutes, since the 40th minute
Salzburg dominated the match and in the best phase of Salzburg Inter made the
1:0.
Why luck: the shot of Marquinho in the 50 min (0:0) was a goal: the ball
jumped from the right bar to the left bar, the ball passed completly the
goal line (we have seen the scene in TV in short time - often) - Enland, think
of the famous WC final !
to .113 "..Austrian Tv presenter claimed that Salzburg were now a European top
team!!! " - yes, it seems so ! Inter's coach Marini: Salzburg has been the best
team in UEFA Cup, we have played in the last years, we had much luck. Salzburg
had been much better than Norwich and Dortmund"
- but Salzburg made no goal - and this is football !
What helps it, that Salzburg had 8 corners, Inter 3.
Salzburg had lost the luck, which they had specially against Lisbon.
We'll hope , that Salzburg will be Austria's championship and will come to
the Champions league.
Congratulations to Inter.

| The italian newspapers after the final:
Gazetta dello Sport: Halleluja Inter. Zenga and Jonk - Inter are kissing you.
Salzburg's attacks made all nervous. In the 2nd half trembled all players,
all Italians.
Corriere dello Sport: Coppa Zenga - the victory was a gift of Zenga.
Die Football-god helped by Marquinhos bar-bar shot.
Tuttosport: only a super Zenga stopped Salzburg.
Corriere della Sera: Thank you Zenga. He saved Inter
Giacinto Facchetti: The atmosphere seemed like the game Inter - Benfica 1964/65
Ernesto Pellegrini (Inter president): God has helped us
I think, that all is a compliment for Salzburg's football - I hope, Austrian
football will go upwards.

| Here in south Germany we had the choice of watching Milan V Salzburg
or Munich V Dynamo Kiev
I suffered the Bayern Munich match, and (with the aid of alcohol)
managed to stay awake right way through the 90 minutes.
Kiev were down to 10 men after, errr, about 10 minutes, but (boring,
boring) Bayern could still only managed to score one goal.
Papin was crap and missed from 6 yards with only the goaly to
beat.
I occasionally flicked over to ORF-2 to see if the other match was less
sleep inducing, but it looked just as dire. I threw my beer bottle at
the telly in desperation.
By the sounds of the Turks V Mancs match, that was no better either.
These are supposedly the best teams in europe! - no wonder Brasil won
the world cup.

I thought it was a bottle of water that knocked the Austrian keeper out :-)
P.S. I hope Milan get what's coming to them after the incident with the Keeper,
and that he makes a full and speedy recovery
