Is Chapuisat (chapy) staying or leaving? A move to Marseille was considered,
to support V�ller and Boksic. Now that Paolo Futre has signed with Marseille, 
that is doubtful.

Chapuisat is one of the best.

    No, Voeller is still with OM, although it is uncertain how long for as
    OM has four foreigners - Voeller, Boksic, Stojkovic and Futre.

   Jasus lads lets talk about Borussia in here not about Marseille. They are
beginning to crop up in every note.....

    If Borussia's players can stay clear of injury for at least most of the
season then they are my favourites to win the German league... They have a very
Balanced team, and if they purchase Karl Heinz Riedle then they have three super
strikers especially if Polsen regains full fitness..... Their only weakness is in
the midfield area, where they have no strong backup for Zorc, Rumennigge or 
Sammer. They have enough money in the bank though to buy a few players. They made
a profit of 25 million DM, approx 10m ST alone for the UEFA cup. And they average
approx 40,000 for EVERY home game... So the future looks good for Borussia.

    What's going on with Riedle ?
    
    Is he coming or not ? I think the best for him is to go to Dortmund
    because there he can only earn glory and honour.
    
    Look at the German premier-division in football or the UEFA-cup,
    the only logical winner of both competitions is "Borussia Dortmund".
    
    For our english friends, where are your teams ?
    Liverpool is down, Arsenal is down and Gazza is drinking...
    
    And the qualification for the world championship next year is far

    O.K. I can answer my own question,
    
    yesterday Karl Heinz Riedle signed a contract with Borussia Dortmund.
    The transfer-sum is 12.7 mio. DM (5 mio. Pound Sterling).
    
    I think they now have the strongest offense in the German
    Premier-division and maybe in Europe...

    Dortmund got a budget of 41 Mio. DM this year. 25 Mio. DM out of the
    European Cup and about 16 Mio. DM through the sold of permanent
    tickets.
    For European conditions our stadium with 40.000 seats might be too
    small, but Borussia Dortmund will increase the capacity up to 60.000 in
    the following two years.
    Now they sold already 28.000 tickets to permanent holders. They spent
    12.7 Mio. DM for the german striker Riedle despite of the fact that he
    got offers from Bayern M�nchen und Olympique Marseille.
    We continue our succesful way from the 60ties.

   Mike I can't really compare the Man Utd strikers to Dortmunds because I 
haven't seen them play... But Dortmunds 3 strikers are also 3 key players in
their national squads. Iam sure you saw how Riedle performed in the US cup??
Poulsen(sp) was a key member of the Danish side that won the Euro 92 and Chappy
looks US bound with the Swiss team. He is in fact my favourite player in the
German Bundesliga, he reminds me a little bit of King Kenny in his glory days..

    yesterdays newsflash wasn't exact!!
    
    Riedle comes for only 9.5 mio DM (~4 mio pound sterl.) and he'll be
    presented to public at 19. of July.
    
    We have now a very strong offence with three players from three
    different nations who also play in their national teams (not so bad ?).
    That will give us approximately a golden future, we are back to the
    roots (remember the times in the 60'ties).
    I agree with dave, you can't compare them with the Man Utd strikers,
    because they are different. Hughes is a great player, but he hasn't the
    talent from Chapi.

    If Rummenigge is getting like his bro, I hope Chapuisat isn't picking
    up some wrong tricks from his dad.
    
    Chappy senior was also a Swiss international, but ended his top
    division career with an interesting tackle on an opponent, for which he
    ended up in court on a "grievous bodily harm" charge (and as far as I
    recall was found guilty).
    
    Then, just the other day, as trainer of a smaller club, he was not very 
    nice to the ref who awarded a last-minute penalty that cost his club
    promotion.  The league are about to sit in judgment on that one.
    
    No doubt the youthful Chap is less impetuous.  Nice to see the tributes
    from all sides.

   Rumennigge junior is not a bad midfield player, but he has and never will come
near the standard his brother set on the football field. I just wish he could set
a similar standard in the commentary box!!!!! Himself and Fassbender should be
permanently gagged!!!!!!!!

   Chappy is a very clean player and rarely gets booked, he still fights like a
terrior though and the fans love him for that......

    I saw it on TV. 30.000 people have seen the team presentation.
    Riedle was totally surprised about the entusiasm of the fans.
    He signed trikots, posters etc. about three hours.
    I think they will have a great next year.

 the allmost wanted final against Munich.
I saw yesterday a very well playing Munich team but I ask
how much it counts, three weeks before the beginning of the

    Dortmund beat Bayern 3-2 in the final last night.

    a good match, many good chances for both teams and Riedle made his
    first goal for us. Both teams had weakness in the defense, but there

all know that Povlsen will be out until sept-oct. I know Riedle is injured but I

   If Dortmund want to pay that kind of money for any player than go ahead. I
personally think he's not worth half of that. Kohlers best years are behind him.
They would be much better off if they shopped locally.... Juve probably need the
money to compensate for Fiat pulling out of the club.

    is Kohler worth so much money ? I think not at all  and his best years 
    are over now.
    
    But remember the only way for Dortmund is to buy German players because
    they have Chapi,Zelic,Povlsen as abroad players.
    Maybe Dortmund has too much money and has to reduce the funds in spite
    of the taxes.
    Also a Kohler not in his best form is still one of the best defense
    players in the world ...
    
    If the transfer is true then Dortmund has a big burden on them.

   Christian if Kohler goes to Dortmund then I for one will be very disappointed.
Agreed he is an excellent defender, but he's worth about the same as Riedle not
a penny more... If Dortmund feel they have so much money to spend then there's
enough talent in Germany believe me. 

   As I said in a previous note Juve no longer have the financial backup from
Fiat, and they can no longer pay the transfer fees like the ones they paid for
Baggio, and Vialli. Juve are in for rough times, and I can see Baggio wearing
the Milan shirt very soon.

    rumour so I think thats all some kind of kidding ??
    
    There was only one announcement from Munichs Manager Hoene� who said
    that Roma demanded about 18m for Riedle and he can't believe that
    Dortmund got him for the half.
    
    But it's right that Juve no longer has the financial backup from
    Fiat to buy expensive players so they have to sell some stuff.
    The only teams in the Italian league which can pay such fantastic 
    sums for players are located in Milano.

	AC Milan. Berlosconi purchased the best players in the world. Once

    Frankly, I think it's too early to say that the days of Italian financial 
    domination of football are over, but I can't say I'm not delighted that
    some of the better foreigners are actually turning up their noses and
    going elsewhere.
    
    In my eyes, it becomes a farce when players who've just won a European
    trophy (Roy, Van't Schip, Winter with Ajax; Sauzee with Marseille;
    Savicevic with Red Star Belgrade, etc.) up all and  come to play in
    Italy for teams that are destined to be fighting against relegation.
    
    Food for thought: A.C. Milan, Juventus and Sampdoria have disputed a
    total of FIVE European Cup Finals in the 80s and 90s...and we're still
    waiting for the first goal by an Italian!

    In the friday evening match Dortmund made his first opener win since
    a couple of years. 
    An excellent playing Sammer made the first goal for Borussia in this
    season. They had some difficulties in the first period but then they
    played very well besides Karlsruhes Rolff got yellow/red for unfair
    playing...
    Chapi made the second goal and that was enough for this day.
    Now they are 7th in the ranking (the first round doesn't say very much)
    Next sunday we'll have the 'Revier' derby in Schalke (18.30 Sat1) and
    I'm convincened they'll get the next two points.

    I worked for IBM in Stuttgart for 3 years and saw Dortmund play against
    VfB and the Kickers several times.  I was impressed with their
    technical skills, but with (most) German teams was frustrated by their
    lack of passion.
    
    However, they showed a lot of unexpected grit against Celtic last
    season.
    
    I predict they will finish third this season behind Bayern and
    Frankfurt.

    On friday there was a flash about Hitzfeld, Daum and Ribbeck in
    a 'serious' german paper (BILD). 
    If anyone believes this bullshit Hitzfeld will go to Munich,
    Daum to Dortmund and Ribbeck is off.

    In the Xmas holidays I met Michael Rummenigge in a
    shop in the city of Dortmund. He was very gentle and
    gave me a few minutes to tell me about his situation
    in Japan.
    First of all he said that he's not very contend with
    the japanese football, because it's very poor in the
    abilties of the japanese players. They are only
    running for and back without any tactical sense.
    So he gives them tactical advises after training.
    
    Also he has problems with the language e.g. in reading
    the stops in the underground but has always a trans-
    lator with him.
    
    His club "Urawa Red Diamonds" was the looser in last
    seasons japanese football league but had not to rele-
    gate because they have only 10 teams.
    
    His payment is excellent (he didn't said it but I know
    that he earns 1.5m DM a year) but he has not in mind
    to stay very long.
    
    As he was in the city of Dortmund many people recognized
    him and asked him for coming back to Borussia.
    From the papers I know that he had a meeting with
    BVB president Mr. Niebaum ...
    Maybe he comes back soon.

    He is midfield player in argentinias national
    team. Hope that they now get the kick for

    Motherwell were very unlucky to lose last night, and indeed, could have
    sneaked a win.
    Dortmund looked very dangerous in the opening 10-15 minutes, and could
    easily have been one or two up. But then Motherwell came right onto a
    game & missed some glaring chances. The one Coyne missed being the 
    mosty blatant miss of the match. Dortmund again looked strong at the
    start of the 2nd, but again had trouble getting in behind a resolute
    defence.
    The goal was well taken by Moller, but his marker really should have
    picked him up & prevented the run.
    The only sour note of the night, was the over zealous tackle on a
    Dortmund player by Paul McGrillen. He could well have broken the guy's
    leg with his lunge, and he deserved to go off.
    I think Motherwell will score one or two at Fir Park in the return, but
    then again so will Borussia !!

    Is `over zealous tackle' Scotspeak for `two-footed knee-high assault'?
    I agree that he had to be sent-off but surely an extended ban and a
    hefty fine from his club would teach McGrillen, (and other players), 
    that this sort of tackle will not be tolerated and that it will affect
    their pay packets, (where it really hurts)....

    The tackle WAS very bad Ray, but I think it was down to the player
    being over-zealous, as opposed to going in with the intention of 
    hurting the German seriously.
    He slid in, the German knocked the ball over him & McGrillen followed
    through & connected with the players knee. He had already committed
    himself to the tackle whilst the player had the ball, and could hardly
    check out of it in mid-stride !
    The galling thing is, when the German played the ball just prior to 
    boot on knee connection, the Motherwell player actually then connected
    with the ball (With his stomach I think ?) & played it out for a German
    shy. So, in theory he won the ball as he connected with the player !

    Yes Motherwell had a very defensive performance in Dortmund but that's
    not a nice way to play football. Will Motherwell use this destructive
    tactic also at home ??? I think they've at least to score two goals to
    run up in the next round and if you look at the Dortmund-match in
    'Kaiserslautern' ( 3 - 6 lost) you have to notice that our boys can
    fight till the end.

    One minute before the end Dortmund had a 2:1 lead but then got a 
    penalty ( Hands ??? by Bodo Schmidt) and K'lautern scored by
    Brehme.
    In the extra time Sammer scored the 3:2 ( 97. min) but two minutes
    later they got the 3:3 ( 99. min) and then they had no more power
    to take the lead again ( as a matter of fact they lost Franck by
    a yellow/red card 80. min).
    
    In general a typical german cup-fight, very aggressive and hard
    ( 10xyellow, 1 red) but Dortmund was the better team !!

    I saw the highlights of the Motherwell/Dortmund tie...and the Scottish
    team were the better of the two sides. As for being defensive...they
    had just as many attacks/chances as their German counterparts. Having
    lots of men behind the ball when the opposition in on the attack isn't
    being defensive, it's being sensible !!!

    now some weeks have gone but I've to say that your statement is
    completly wrong.
    As far as I saw this match Borussia played excellent in the first
    half ( could make the second and third goal for a 2:0 or 3:0).
    They were very dominating this first half and lost suprisingly
    some of their power in the second half . Motherwell then had some
    chances/possibilities but it wasn't very serious. Dortmund was
    fighting and that counts !!!

    Well, what can I say.
    
    Jammy buggers thats what.  As Alex Ferguson said at the end of the
    game.. "They were lucky winners".
    
    At least Lambert didn't score, that would have been the nail in the
    coffin.  3 German teams in the Euro Cup next year, don't know if I
    like the idea of that.  Should be champions only IMO after all it
    is the CHAMPIONS league.
    
    Anyway, good luck to the Juve old boys, I've still got a soft spot
    for big Jurgen and it was nice to see him pick up the trophy even
    if he was playing for the enemy.

    A couple of trainspotterish points......
    
    The mighty Juve had won seven of their last eight games but Borussia
    had lost six of their last eight. Juve had conceded only ten goals during 
    the Champions League campaign prior to BD's "lucky" win.  On these sort
    of facts the Germans were written off by everyone, myself included,
    even though in recent years they have shown the class to beat anyone 
    
    I was fully expecting BD to grind out the one nil result Juve would
    have settled for had they scored first, instead they kept attacking
    well on the break and (IMHO) showed up frailties in the Italian defence 
    that are supposed to be non-existent. Given Sammer was supposedly far 
    from fit he was outstanding and made some excellent tackles along with 
    Koele (sp).   
    
    The top moment had to be Ricken (sp again) coming on -  sixteen seconds on 
    the pitch and your first touch leaves Peruzzi looking rather stupid -
    it rather redefines the word "super-sub". The aerial view of that goal
    is a classic. 
    
    
    I thought it was an excellent game after some of the dull finals of

    Ray was refering to Brian Moore and his bias. I also wish he would shut
    up on nights like that as it is embarrassing to be a Utd supporter and
    hear that drivel!! Mind you he would have come out with the same sh*te
    if it was (suspend belief mode on) Leeds in the previous game, come to
    that any other English team. He is a xenophobic tosser of the highest
    order, it has nothing to do with teams at club level.

    What got to me was the fact that on numerous occassions they got
    Zidane and Jugovic mixed up and then when they finally got that
    sorted they then started pronouncing Jugovic's name wrongly.
    
    Surely they should have done their homework for this game.  Got to
    the stage where I turned the sound down on my telly and tuned into
    Radio 5 to listen to their comments.
    
    Mind you at least there was no Jimmy Hill to wind me up.

    Anyone who saw the game last night and watched the champions league
    as a whole would have to say that Juventus are a better side than
    Dortmund.  Lets not forget Juventus went into the game with the
    Serie A Championship,European Supercup and World Clup Cup under their
    belts.  While winning these trophies they demolished Ajax,PSG and
    Ac Milan.  
    
    I have to admit though at the end of it all the Italian teams in
    Europe this season offered so much but delivered little.  After
    they reached all three european finals this season they won none, with
    Juventus,Inter and Fiorentina all losing.
    
    I can't remember the last time no Italian team won a European trophy,
    can anybody enlighten me?.
    
    Good luck to the Germans its about time they started recovering some
    form in European competition.

    Well try this for size:
    
    The Germans this year (1996/97) have won the European Cup, the UEFA Cup, 
    the European Championships...and have also carried off the award for
    the world's best player (Sammer). So maybe it's about them the
    Italians started doing the business at club level ;-)
    
    As for Juventus looking by far the best team in the Chamions League
    this year, bear in mind that Dortmund only lost one game in the whole
    tournament. Basically, they beat Juventus by playing a similar game to
    the one Juventus used to beat ManU and Rosenborg (and in practically
    every game under Trapattoni in the 80s), i.e. get plenty of players back 
    behind the ball "and hit 'em on the break"! 
    
    Nothing wrong with that then, is there?!

    Regarding German teams and what they have won this season, remember
    that they won these trophies or honours this season, what about the
    last five years.  They have been non-existent in european football
    compared to the Italians.  The only thing I agree with you on would be
    the supremacy of the German National team.  
    
    And as for your derogatory remark about Juventus under Trap, can I ask
    you who won the Bundesliga this year and who was their manager.

    Based on last nights result I would say that the Germans did the job as
    required. 
    
    What I found most predictable, and unnecessary, was the behaviour of   
    players like Di Livio during the second half, talk about conforming to 
    stereotype! It's a shame that Boksic' teammates did not follow his
    example. If he had dived, as many of his chums would have done under the 
    non-existent pressure, he would not have got the cross in that led to
    Juves goal (does that make sense?)

    Well my opinion for what its worth is the same as Stretch, it does'nt
    really matter who is better than who because at the end of the day
    engraved on the cup will be the name Dortmund.
    
    Just to add something else I though the referee last night was supurb
    considoring the pressure he was put under by the antics of some of the
    players.
    
    One thing made me laugh about Sousa (?) stretched off, legs strapped, in
    the dying moments, next minute he was dancing on the podium holding the
    cup......Its a funny old game

    My tuppence (erm...3 cents) worth...Dortmund won with effective, not
    pretty football.  Craig, yer talking mince, not for the first time
    either. Juve may have more "flair"....thats just about it. Dortmund
    won and added to the success of German footie generally this year, I
    say THEY are better....all depends on what you measure.
    
    Oh...what the hell have YOU got against Paul Lambert ?  He is not an
    ex-old firm guy, not an idiot...just a nice guy who has had a
    fairy-tale season.  You slag off a Scot and rave about an Italian team.

    Juventus are a magnificent team,they normally are on a different planet
    to other teams but the fact remains that in a one off game it`s who
    puts the ball in the net the most that wins (couldn`t avoid the
    cliche,sorry).
    Dortmund played to their strengths and it payed off,they can`t be
    faulted. Juventus played well but the little peice of luck you need
    just wasn`t there for them.
    So it was four great goals and a nice change from recent champions
    finals with only the odd goal to decide it.

    What a player! The Juve midfield is usually their most reliable department,
    but they sere definitely second best this time. Apart from the shot against
    the post, Zidane didn't get a look in (largely thanks to Lambert), and
    Herrlich trounced Mr. Di Livio, who resorted to clutching his head and
    appealing to the referee for most of the second half. Even Deschamps
    won less and less possession as time went on.
    
    So how come Lambert's not a regular in the Scottish team? OK, he's not
    a world-beater, but he looks *extremely* comfortable at this level,
    and you don't get much higher. Indeed, the Italian press made him MOTM
    together with Riedle and Herrlich.

    I have to say I don't agree that Dortmund midfield were better than
    Juve's.  Juventus dominated the majority of the match and attacked
    for most of the game.  OK Zidane and company did't play as well
    as usual but they were certainly not out played by Lambert and
    co.
    
    Dortmund won the game IMO because they took advantage of
    Juve's lack of defensive prowess in the air and had that little
    bit of luck you need.  
    
    I do admit though that they won fair and square over 90 mins and
    history will show them as winners.
    
    However, maybe I'm biased but what I'm saying is that if the two teams
    played a series of 5 games then Juventus would prevail.
    
    RE:Pounder wondering how a scotman ends up slagging Lambert and
    supporting Juventus.  If you had to put up with Scottish football
    all your life you too would eventually find yourself going elsewhere
    for a team to support.  I've supported Juve for years and now
    find myself talking about them using "us" and "we".

    usual "scotsman supporting tallies" remarks.
