| Swindon have just signed Norwegian forward Jan Aage Fjortoft from Rapid
Vienna for a club record of 500,000 (we may be in the big league but
not unfortunatley when it comes to cash).
Who is he I hear you ask. Well cast your mind back the the Norway V
England match. remember the quick thinking Norwegian, who was on the
move while DEs Walker was arguing about the free kick, and made the
first goal. Thats the guy.
Seems Swindon got him because david Hay, swindon assistant manager,
used to be his manager in Norway a few years ago.
We'll have to wait and see he is in the hurly burly of the english
league.

Is the Newcastle home game on SKY as we were going to make the
trip to Swindon for this game. I'm sure I heard that it was.
If it is it will be switched to the monday night and scupper our plans.
Have to go to the away game at Man U if we can get the tickets from

Yes, your right. Watched the SKY ad again and no mention of the
newcastle tie being televised. Looks like we'll be heading south for
this game. My mate Tommy reckons if Spurs slap the magic 1 000 000 on
the table the Swindon directors, not Gorman, will take it for
Calderwood. He reckons Gorman want's to keep hold of him because he'll
be hard to replace.

Looks like it's going to a tribunial. He's signed for Spurs and the

After the Glenn Hoddle settlement (Swindon asked for 1M and got 75K
plus 2K per match) who knows what the tribunal will decide.
Also Mansfield when they sold Calderwood to Swindon had a clause in the
deal which entitles them to 50% of the transfer fee. Clever Old
Mansfield.

| Dave Mitchell has signed for Turkish club - IZMIR for 20K.
The first SWindon knew about it was when the cheque went into their
bank account. Mitchell was on a week to week contract. Also their was a
clause in it that said if he moved abroad he could go for the above
sum.
He was on international duty with Australia when all this happened. Its
a bit disappointing and non too gentlemanlly. But thats the way it
goes. I guess the cash he can get in Turkey is worth more than playing
in the Premier league.
The Swindon board seem to be a bit naive when it comes to getting the
contracts sorted out IMO - Hoddle goes for 75K, half of Calderwood's
fee will go to Mansfield, and now they lose their striker fo 20K.

One of SKY's advertising snippets for the coming season uses Swindon

will Chelsea fair in the coming season ??

I agree 100% - John Gorman was the managerial force and Glenn supplied
the football skill and inspiration. Although to be fair they did inherit a useful
little team from Ossie and Lou.
With Gorman and Hay running things I believe that there is a great
depth of managerial experience but more importantly I think David Hay
brings with hime the experience of manageing teams on limited cash
funds which will definately be the case at Swindon.

Swindon v Liverpool. Live on SKY.
Not a great scoreline for Swindon, but an excellent display of
possesion and grit. Swindon matched Liverpool in every department
except the clinical finishing. Swindon ended the game with more
attempts at goal than Liverpool.
Put into perspective this was a newly promoted team, a very young team,
against a team of hardened, experienced, international players who
have done it all. Swindon should not be disheartened and keep
their concentration on beating and/or taking points from teams from
the lower half of the league. Survival is the main aim this season.
A very unlucky result against Oldham last week, Oldham scoring in the
second minute of injury time. This put Oldham half way up the league
with three points and Swindon still to break their duck. A bit more
killer instinct in front of goal and the points will start mounting up.
Great game to watch...

| Colin once again I agree 100%.
I was at the match and certainly was not disheartened. Swindon played
some really nice football until the got in front of goal.
They had a couple of good chances before Liverpool opened the scoring
from what I can only call a dubious free kick. ANd even as the goals
were going in against them they still persisted and played football to
the end.
I beleive they will play worse than they did yesterday and come away
with points against other teams.
This was my first look at the team this season and I wass impressed by
Nijholt - he looks to be a 'steal at 250K.
Never mind the bootom of the table clash against Southampton on
Wednesday should see Swindon pick up their first premiership points.

| Well I made the trip from Paris to Swindon at the weekend - a last
minute decision but worth it. Had to go track down my season ticket
which I'd left in the pub the previous week
Having watched them against Sheff Utd. When both teams were crap -
Saturday was a vast improvement.
Swindon started well and dominated the first twenty minutes, playing
really nice passing football (had to as the wind was blowing a gale
right into their faces) having suvived an early scare when Southampton
went close early on and only a finger tip save over the bar from Digby
prevented the goal.
Town went ahed after a superb goal from Bodin - and I mean superb. He
got the ball out wide headed into the box beating two players en route
and neatly tuck the ball pass Beasant to put the boys 1 up.
Having played some nice football early on the Town drifted into the old
laxed spell that they always seem to have and Southhampton started to
dominate and it was only a matter of time before the equaliser came.
A lovely cool finish from Le Tissier after some neat build up.
Second have was a much better half with Swindon haveing the best of the
match but not really cashing in on several good chances they'd created.
The goal when it came was from a corner kick which Scott headed full
force past Beasant. 2-1.
Southampton to their credit kept plugging away and came close to an
equaliser and caused a few hearts to flutter in the North Stand.
Even Beasant came up for a corner right at the end.
Swindon should have had a third when Maskell was through but Beasnt
blocked the shot and the two attempts off the rebounds.
All in all it was a good game which Swindon deserved to win. Best
players on the day - for me at least - were Moncur, never gives up,
always wants the ball and really drove Swindon on. And Monkou, the
Southampton defender, he's a good un.Big and strong and didn't let too
much get passed him.
And just to round the day off I won the pub sweepstake. A good day out.

| Colin,
The keeper was Nicky Hammond - same guy that played in the FA cup game.
He had another dodgy game and it was his poor goalkeeping that gave
away the Spurs goal.
The goalkeeper is only one of many problem positions - defence is weak
and disorganised - maybe brian Kilcline will help- just have to wait
and see.
Strike force is struggling - Andy Mutch isn't much to write home about.
But now that Jan Aage has found his scoring boots then maybe we might
see some improvement. He was suppossed to be going on loan to
lilliestrom but it lloks like that has been put on ice for the time
being.
Its going to be a struggle to survive - its only fortunate that the
teams around us are just as bad, if not worse.
We're still bottom - it'll take a few more wins to get clear of bottom
mainly because our gaol difference is so bad.

| I think SWINDON have turned the corner as far as cofidence goes.
The problems they've had surrounding the ammount of goals that have
been conceded i think must be put down to a lack of expeirience
particularly regarding the goalkeeping & central defence.I think by
signing someone with proven leadership & abundance of expierience in
English football BRIAN KILCLINE will go on to prove the bargain buy
of the season, because JOHN GORMAN and him are on the same level they're
both WINNERS.The last few results are at last rewarding SWINDON for all
GOOD things they've done on the field of play this season.THEY have
never stopped beleiving in themselves but obviously the confidence
drains from any team who are playing well but dont seem to get any
breaks. If you look at the league table you'll notice they've scored
more goals than 7 or 8 teams above,so if they continue to sow it up at
the back then as i said earlier they've turned the corner.......

| Having seen Swindon vs West Ham i still beleive Swindon can avoid the
drop. They were a far superior side than West Ham but that little bit of
luck still escapes them. They could easily have been 2 goals up at half
time but were not and suffered severely, losing a goal with 2 miniutes
on the clock in the second half. All credit to them they kept playing
good football and deservedly equalised with a couple of miniutes to go.
I personally think a wee bit lack of self confidence from the forwards
when in good scoring positions is the reason why thy're not picking up
3 point especially in thier home matches.
They now have probably the toughest programme coming up that the've had
all season, with games against the top 4 clubs within the next 5 weeks.
Their luck is such that the man they brought from Newcastle Brian
Kilcline is out for the rest of the season with a broken foot.
Still if they dont lose faith in their ability and keep playing the way
have been there's still a chance....

Swindon have played some good football and have been unlucky on several
occasions this season and I've seen every home match apart from the
Oldham game.
Up until a few weeks ago I honestly believed they could avoid the drop
because there were s lot of 'dross' teams all hovering about the bottom
but now I've resigned myself to the fact that they are going down.
Never mind a win against Man Utd will salavge a bit of pride and help

first team to be beaten 7-1 in the premier league and probably wont be
the last.A few facts wouldn't go a miss on Swindons misfortune, because
beleive me a bigger club with half their problems would have been
crying all over the back pages. As far as i could see there was no less
than six changes {4 personnel & 2 Positional} from the previous week
due to sickness & injury.Several players took ill on the way to the
game itself {maybe had an insight of what was in store} anyway to his
credit Gorman never bemoaned his luck typical of the man whose sole
aim is to give Swindon a team to proud of,he sweats blood for them

Well made my first visit to the County Ground this season and
witnessed what can only be described as 'a steal' when the Town
(swindon that is) scored two goals in the last minutes to take three
points which in all honesty they didn't deserve. But hey its about time
they got the lucky breaks.
The match itself was a poor advert for football and especially football
refereeing. The ref was hopeless. But even with good refereeing it
would still have been as (s)crappy.
After a quiet opening , apart from Keith Scott getting a yellow card
after 20 seconds, Swindon went ahead after a superbly struck left foot
volley from the edge of the box from Paul Bodin from Beauchamps corner
kick. Other efforts were a Fjortoft shot which went inches wide and
then a Scott goal which was disallowed for offside.
As appears to be their norm Swindon had their 10 minute spell when they
go to pieces and it was during this time that Grimsby equalised after a
nice move down the right wing and perfect cross for Neil Woods to head
powerfully home the equaliser for the visitors. Swindon nearly went in
at half time with the lead but the Grimsby keeper turned a Joey
Beauchamp drive round the post.
A bright start to the second half saw Swindon domeinate the opening
15 mins and they had 3 good chances which should have killed off
Grimsby. Scott hitting the crossbar and then having a close range
effort beaten away by the Grimsby keeper.
Then Swindon had another bad spell where Grimsby put them uder the cosh
and after failing miserably to clear their lines after sustained
Grimsby pressure they conceded a second goal. Grimsby then had an
opportunity to put the game beyond Swindon's grasp when Dobbin, IMO the
best player on the park, had a fine effort from 25 yards edged round
the post by Digby.
The game had little else - Swindon had given up - to offer until the
89th minute when Fjortoft was brought down by Mark Lever. Just rewards
because he had been getting away with murder all game. Bodin stepped up
and hit the penalty, via the keepers leg into the net.
A draw would have been a fair result but in a move similar to Grimsby
in the first half - run up the right wing, perfect cross - Scott
slotted home the winner from 10 yards. As I said 'a steal' . Victory
from the jaws of defeat to add anothe cliche.
If Swindon play like this then I dont envisage a quich return to the
top flight.
Plus points were Joey Beauchamp looks to be a good little player and oh
yeah the new Intel stand looks very smart.

Thanks for the fixture list Jim,gives me a chance to plan my trips
south.
Was talking to John Gorman after the Chrlton match he said the team
played really well and made loads of chances during the game and
deserved to go through to the next round.Big Jan Age scored a first
half hat trick but Charlton scored 5 mins from time to force the tie
into extra time.Scott scored the winner for Swindon.John reckons
tactically he got it right for once,he played with 3 strikers from
the start with the full backs pushing in on midfield and 3 central
defenders, went on the offensive from the start and Charlton never
really got going in the match, here's hoping this is the start of a
good run in the CC CUP.

| The announce at Swindon got the sack last night after starting the
half-time announcements with something like "I've seen some crap refereeing

The outburst had something to do with the Swindon player/manager and all-round

of Bolton. Bolton won 1-0 with a late goal.

Do you mean the announcer, the referee or Steve McMahon ? Or Jason
McAteer ?
Reminds of the story about Tiger Tim, the Radio Clyde DJ and half
time announcer at Celtic Park. Celtic were playing a midweek game a
couple of years ago and Rangers were playing a European game abroad
which started an hour or so earlier. So at half time Tiger Tim
announced : "Let's have a minutes silence for Rangers who have just
been knocked out of the European Cup. Right that'll do ...".
Needless to say he got his jotters for that one.

| Yes he was sacked. I was at that game and the police reported him to the club
secretary who sacked him on the spot. The police felt it might incite crowd
trouble.
IMO they should have reported the referee. Following the decision in the 38th
the crowd became unhappy to say the least.
Anyway, the announcer (Pete Lewis?) was back in the crowd in a spectator
capacity only on Saturday for the trouncing of Oldham....courtesy of a Steve
McMahan freebee ticket.
I would have reported this earlier but I thought this note was dead. I'm glad to
see it isn't totally.

| Are there still any Swindon fans out there or am I now the only one?
I'm Graham Busson and I work in Reading. I've been following the Town
for about 10 years and it looks like we are going to walk this division
much as we did in the 4th division 10 years ago.
I must admit when Steve McMahon became manager I was not a fan of his,
but he really has got a team together now who are far better than
anything else in the division. Finney and Allison have made a great
team up front and for the first time in years we look strong at the
back. Also he has competition in all the key areas so things are
looking rosy at the Cnty Ground this year.

308.82 | 3-0 to the Swindon Town | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon Jan 22 1996 13:49 | 22 |
| Swindon 3 - 0 Hull
These were by far the worst team I have seen in this pretty poor
division. Only Crewe have threatened us so far and no-one else looks
likely to. 0-0 at half time was a fair reflection on the game. Hull
created nothing with a 17 year old striker who obviously hadn't been to
school recently because he had never heard of offsides. The game was
effectively over 6 minutes into the second half when Peter Thorne
poached a half chance. Tony Grant on loan from Everton added a second,
lobbing the keeper from 35 yards and Horlock glanced in a header for
the third. Not bad for a patched up team with a midfielder and two full
backs playing at centre back. Ty Gooden had a stormer as did Tony Grant
who looked composed and cool on the ball. The defence looked strong and
only Martin Ling had an off day (which he tends to do more than he has
good days). McMahon later brought him off and put Steve Finney on into
the attacking midfield role he has been playing when coming off the
bench.
Hull from the time the second goal went in hacked at every Swindon
player they could and the ref let them get away with it, booking 2
Towners for innocuous challenges instead.

308.84 | Swindon 2 - 1 Carlisle | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon Feb 05 1996 11:29 | 22 |
| Swindon 2-1 Carlisle Utd
Another patchy performance by Swindon that saw them pull 6points
clear of their nearest rivals at the top of the table.
On the plus side, Shaun Taylor was back after injury and looked as
good as new. Ty Gooden had a good game considering he was asked to play
right back. Peter Thorne looks on form and scored his 4th league goal
in 4 starts. he now has 6 goals in only 10 starts this season. Allison
also broke his scoring duck with a simple header.
On the negative side, it took the town 45 minutes to get into the
match and then they were rampant. Digby lost his clean sheet to some
very sloppy defending. Martin Ling continues to go from bad to worse
and should have come off at half time and Paul Allen was missed badly
in midfield.
I hope we can keep Tony Grant because he is excellent. No real pace
or tackling ability but he's not afraid to shoot and is a wonderful
passer of the ball. McMahon's replacement has been found.

308.85 | Seasonal update | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Thu Mar 21 1996 15:33 | 19 |
| As I'm talking to myself in here at the moment I had better continue.
Swindon lay in second place two points behind Blackpool but with two
games in hand. Two indifferent performances this week haven't helped
the cause, a nil nil draw at Burnley which saw Steve Finney stretchered
off with a broken leg, and a three nil defeat at Oxford.
It is rumoured that David Preece will sign on loan until the end of the
season this week but a striker now seems an absolute must. There are
only two recognised strikers in the squad, Peter Thorne and Wayne
Allison and neither are in peak form. There is an 18 year old Brazilian
on trial but we can't expect him to step into the breach yet. He
apparently holds a Portuguese passport so doesn't need a work permit.
A win Saturday is an absolute must. Peterboro at home should pose no
significant problem, but if the team is just hitting a bad run of form
they are doing it at the wrong time.

It was bound to happen really. Beauchamp had to score considering the
way MacMahon propelled him out of the club, and they hit us on the

means that Town may have a local derby in the first division after
all!!

308.88 | Swindon 2 - 0 Peterboro | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon Mar 25 1996 14:09 | 30 |
| Swindon Town 2 - 0 Peterborough Utd
Allison 11
P Thorne 16
A more comfortable win than the scoreline suggests. By half-time
Swindon would not have been flattered if tthey had been 4-0 up. Allison
opened the scoring in the 11th minute, Paul Allen who was a thorn all
through the game crossed the ball in, Allison chested it down and fired
it beyond Jon Sheffield. Then in the 16th minute, Peter Thorne got on
the end of a floating far post cross and netted from a yard out.
Throughout the first half Swindon dominated, Thorne having two efforts
blocked, Allison missing a couple and Robinson the centre-back twice
floated crosses onto the front of the bar.
Second-half Swindon could not put their game together and basically
played out time. They had one or two good chances but it was rather
half-hearted and the crowd responded to this by silence. On the whole
though the important thing was the 3 points. It means that we are 7
points clear of 3rd place and still 2 behind Blackpool with 2 games in
hand.
Frank Talia was the only concern from Saturday. He was unsure, poor on
crosses and fluffed a couple of easy saves. Digby will probably be back
for the derby on Saturday vs Bristol City.
Team: Talia, Culverhouse, Bodin, Preece, Allen, Taylor, Robinson,
O'Sullivan (Ling), Thorne (Cowe), Allison, Horlock. sub not used
Seagraves.
David Preece was Man of the Match and Steve Cowe looked useful if a

game into his month's loan spell is signed permanently from Aston Villa
for 100,000. A lot of money considering he only made his first- team

let him go.
The other signing was Don Leitch, signed from on loan till the end of

308.94 | Looking better | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Wed Apr 03 1996 13:20 | 33 |
| A good set of results last night (2/4) for Swindon. Of the top six only
Chesterfield won and Oxford drew.
Chesterfield 1 - 0 Blackpool : Blackpool are now 5 points ahead but we
now have 4 games in hand over them.
Carlisle 1 - 0 Crewe : Crewe have now played three more games
than us and are 5 points behind.
Rotherham 2 - 0 Notts Co : Notts Co are just about out of it in
fourth place
Oxford 0 - 0 Wrexham : Oxford's good run at home comes to an
end.
Which means that tonight's game against Brighton becomes vital to get a
win although I can't see any other result for the game.
The table is now taking shape and it is looking good.
My prediction come the end of season is:-
1. Swindon
2. Blackpool
============
3. Crewe
4. Oxford
5. Notts Co
6. Chesterfield
A Crewe vs Oxford play-off final which Crewe will win.

would lose a lot of their young starlets like Danny Murphy, Ashley

308.97 | Swindon Town 3 - 2 Brighton & Hove Albion | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Thu Apr 04 1996 11:41 | 11 |
| Good win last night if a little lucky. Peter Thorne gave us the lead
after 44 minutes and Wayne Allison doubled it 18 seconds (!) into the
second half. Then as usual we sat back and Brighton made a game of it.
Minton and Zeke Rowe scoring to bring the scores level. Then with five
minutes left Thorne scored with a back-header from a good distance out
(reckoned to be on the edge of the box) to win the game for the Yokels.
We're now only 2 points behind Blackpool with three games in hand and 8
points ahead of Crewe with 2 games in hand. Big weekend this weekend
though. Notts Co at home and Crewe away.

| Swindon 1-0 Notts Co
A deserved win but boy did we have to wait! Swindon did everything but
score. Notts Co got out of their half only twice in the second half,
such was the pressure we put them under. The goal when it came was
spectacular. A corner came in and Kevin Horlock's scissor kick beat
Darren Ward at his near post, 89 minutes gone.
Team: Talia, Culverhouse, Bodin, Preece, Allen, Taylor, Robinson,
Leitch (O'Sullivan 88), Thorne (Cowe 80), Allison, Horlock. sub not

Crewe 0 - 2 Swindon
Horlock's second in two games and a first for Preece sealed what
was in the end a very comfortable win for the boys. More importantly it
put us 14 points clear of Crewe leaving us needing only six more to
become the first team in the country to gain promotion. It also put us
4 points clear of Blackpool at the top as the seem to have started on a
poor run of late and we still have three games in hand.
6 points needed to gain promotion. About 10 or 11 to secure the title
Steve McMahon promised us and is delivering.

308.101 | Swindon 2 - 2 AFC Bournemouth | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon Apr 15 1996 10:32 | 49 |
| Swindon 2 - 2 AFC Bournemouth
What can I say? If ever there was a match to forward the case of
professional referees this was it. For all fans of Endsleigh league
teams please watch out for Mr Lomas of Manchester. I think he picked up
his refereeing skills watching rugby union. The only thing he didn't do
was award a scrum!! I realise that next year they will play rugby style
advantages but not this!!
That's enough about the ref though, although apparently several fans
have reported him to the police for inciting the crowd!!
The game was pretty dire. The ref didn't help this. Swindon had two
shots in the entire game and one was a penalty. Bournemouth used five
at the back to counter our wing-backs and had mobile forwards who
caused us problems all through the game.
Swindon took the lead against the run of play on 17 minutes when
Horlock beat two players in the area with a deft lift over their
challenges before hitting a deflected shot past Jimmy Glass through a
crowded area. Talia had a mare in goal and it was no surprise when
Steve Jones netted 15 minutes later when he headed downwards to beat
the goalie who was already grounded. By the way he celebrated you would
have thought that he had just won the FA Cup.
At half-time McMahon must have given them a rocket because they came
out playing much better. Paul Bodin was taken off as he looked slow and
was caught out of position too often and Alex Smith came on. On 58
minutes we were caught on the break though and Steve Jones easily beat
Talia to make it 2 - 1. On 62 minutes the ref awarded a penalty for
handball to Swindon and Horlock slotted home his 14th of the season.
Not bad for a midfielder who had only scored twice in total before this
season! After that the game petered out. No clear cut chances were
created or looked like being created. Steve Cowe came on for Peter
Thorne and showed some good touches but a draw was about a fair result.
Elsewhere results went for us in the most part. Blackpool were held,
Crewe won and Notts Co and Chesterfield both drew. We couldn't have won
the title Wednesday even if we had won this game.
Team: Talia, Culverhouse, Bodin (Smith 45), Preece, Allen, Taylor, Robinson,
Leitch, Thorne (Cowe 60), Allison, Horlock subs not used Seagraves
Changes I would make for Wednesday night vs Burnley
Digby for Talia (defence had absolutely no confidence in the Aussie)
Smith/ Drysdale for Bodin (Bodin looked slow and was caught too often)
McMahon/ O'Sullivan for Leitch (was anonymous except for two shots...
one which went over the stand and one that he miss-kicked two yards
behind him!!)

308.103 | Swindon Town 0 - 0 Burnley | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Thu Apr 18 1996 10:20 | 21 |
| Me and my big mouth. Burnley came to kick the ball out of play at every
opportunity and did it so well that I hear Arsenal are about to sign
the entire back line! I have never seen a team spoil a game like that.
I had to travel back on the train and the Burnley fans were actually
happy with their team's performance. We had several good chances but
Beresford in the Burnley goal was in good form tipping over efforts
from Allison, Bodin and Thorne, whilst Thorne also narrowly volleyed
over and Taylor missed a sitter with a header from a corner.
One of those nights I guess. Second half the players got nervy and the
passing game went to pot so the chances dried up.
A draw on Saturday at Blackpool will ensure promotion. A win will
secure the title as well. They will have to play a lot better though to
do it.
Team: Digby, Culverhouse, Bodin, Preece (Cowe), Allen, Taylor,
Robinson, Leitch, Thorne, Allison, Horlock subs not used:
Seagraves and Smith.

308.104 | PROMOTION PARTY | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon Apr 22 1996 10:11 | 20 |
| Done it!!
Major relief and celebrations had by all.
Blackpool 1 - 1 Swindon
Uninspiring game livened up by the events off the pitch. Horlock scored
with a nice move after 17 minutes, his 15th goal of the season.
Blackpool equalised after 61 minutes with a 25 yarder which sneaked
between Digby and the post. Blackpool's Preece was booked after
elbowing Culverhouse in the face, and Leitch faces a lay-off after
clashing with Eric Nixon.
After the game when McMahon was giving his post-match interview Sam
Allardyce, the 'pool mananger told reporters that they couldn't do it
there and moved them away. McMahon told him to "Be a sport and to take
it like a man" and then the two got into a row which involved McMahon
being called a Scouse Git by the match announcer!
All good fun, but then WE ARE GOING UP!!

308.105 | CHAMPIONS!! | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Wed Apr 24 1996 10:36 | 16 |
| Chesterfield 1 - 3 Swindon Town
Hewitt Cowe
Thorne
Allison
Swindon win this important game and are now champions of Division 2
meaning that the last home game versus Stockport really will be a party
to savour. Cowe gave us the lead after 23 minutes, Hewitt equalising on
30 after a mistake by Diggers. Almost immediately Thorne put Town back
in the lead and in the second half Allison sealed it. It was Cowe's
first league goal on his full league debut, and Thorne and Allison's
firsts for five games.
More details when I have them.

| More as promised.
Swindon's goals were all pretty good ones. Cowe hit a half-volley from
18 yards out as did Thorne for his goal, looping over the goalie.
Allison peeled off his defender for a cross he couldn't meet with a
header and flicked it past the keeper with the side of his foot. The
Chesterfield goal was soft and Diggers should have done better. Still
not bad considering that 6 first choice players were out and Steve
McMahon in his own words was too p*ssed to play!
Side:- Digby, Culverhouse, Bodin, O'Sullivan, Seagraves, Taylor,
Robinson, Cowe, Thorne, Allison , Horlock. subs: Ling, Smith, Collins

308.107 | 2 v 1 Win and a 1 v 1 draw | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Wed May 01 1996 12:05 | 25 |
| Shrewsbury 1 - 2 Swindon
Currie Horlock
Taylor
Yet another win away from home means that is our club record away with
thirteen wins. Horlock opened the scoring turning sharply to finish
from close range. Currie pulled a goal back with an accutely angled
shot that went under Digby, before Taylor powered in a header for his
7th of the season in the second half. Swindon were without several
first-teamers and Allison was relegated to the bench. Cowe preferred up
front with Thorne. Alex Smith made his full debut after 10 games on the
bench and Drysdale returned to sit on the bench.
Side: Digby, Culverhouse, Smith, Ling, Seagraves, Taylor, Robinson,
O'Sullivan (Collins 58), Thorne (Allison 45), Cowe, Horlock (Drysdale
58).
Also Swindon played Bradford last night and pulled off a 1 v 1 draw
against one of the divisions form teams managed by former Swindon
stalwart Chris Kamara. Wright gave Bradford the lead on 51 minutes but
Allison hit a 20 yarder for his 20th goal of the season in the 66th
minute. Swindon are now 11 points clear at the top of the table and
have only lost once in the league in their last 20 games. Deserved
champions who have been a cut above the rest this year and won the
division at a canter.

| McMahon reckons that next year is a "consolidation" year before an
assault on the Premiership is mounted. The club is looking for around
2.5million pounds in new sponsorship and in a new share issue to
prepare the team and finish the last part of the ground. I reckon on a
top half finish next year, but with the division being so tight,
anything could happen.

308.110 | Dream Team: Hoddle and Gorman | CHEFS::BUSSONG | | Mon May 13 1996 10:47 | 8 |
| After an excellent season for us, the season has been capped by the
news that the former Swindon partnership of Hoddle and Gorman will now
run the England team. On previous performances this means that England
will be attacking, but defensively naive, and will win many "Friends"
as Swindon did in the Premier League. They were only our friends
because we improved their goal difference!

| If my memory serves me correctly, I think Phil Alexandra left to go to

On another note it would be a nice thought to think that Glenn Hoddle
learnt everything he knows about management at Swindon.
Alas though, a thought is all it is.

Both Martin Ling and Paul Bodin are at the end of their contracts and
have both been released by Steve MacMahon in a continuing effort to
reduce the wages bill.
On the incoming front, Swindon have signed a schoolboy international
who is supposed to be highly rated ( his name eludes me ). If I
read the report correctly in the local paper, that makes a total of 5
schoolboy internationals we now have.

Do you have details of the fixture list you could post. I know that we
have Pompey away on Boxing Day which is typical as I return to Pompey
to pretend to be a student and was looking forward to going to at least
one away game this year, but no!
Also any juicy gossip on new signings etc as my home contact has left
Swindon for the bright lights of Milton Keynes!!

Swindon looked rather rusty in this game. It was the Kevin Morris
Memorial match and nearly 14,000 people turned out. It was Town's first
major friendly and it showed. For long periods we had possession but
their was no edge up front. Cowe started with Allison and looked very
quick and sharp. Watson looked useful in midfield although once or
twice he dwelt on the ball too long. Mark Walters came on for the
second half and looked comfortable running at people from right back
and Scott Leitch hit one 20-yarder that narrowly went wide. Dennis Wise
and Paul Allen just seemed content to kick lumps out of each other
after a fracas that saw both get booked.
Neither Gullit or Vialli played for Chelsea, although their other two
new signings Di Matteo and Leboeuf did although neither looked special.

the Chelsea cheeky chappy who thought it was really funny. Tickets were
only 6 quid and I think they are 7 pounds for Paulo's game. The only
bad thing about the game was I thought there was a lack of respect
shown. Although Glenn and John Gorman presented Kevin Morris' widow and
daughter with flowers I couldn't help thinking that a minute's silence
before the game should have happened as well.
I can't wait for the new season even though I'll only see three games
before I disappear back off to Uni.
