I'll start off by going for Barnsie. A superb player at Watford at a very
early age and who was instrumental in bringing Watford from nowhere to
sixth place in the first division at one stage. He almost single-handedly
brought Watford to the cup final in 1984. His move to Liverpool in 1987 for
900,000 was a success from the start and alongside players like Whelan,
Dalglish, Hansen, Nicol, Beardsley, Houghton, McMahon & Aldridge, he helped
Liverpool to run away with the league in 1988, the cup final triumph over
Everton in 1989 and the league again in 1990. His free-kicks are the best in
the English game and his ability to beat defenders in second to none. All round,
an exceptional player.
Giggs, is also a great player at a very young age and his success is all
the greater when one considers that he doesn't have the talented players
around him like Barnsie had at Liverpool. He has won young player of the
year twice and has shown some nice touches but he tends to drift in and out
of games. He will improve with time of course and if he moves to a bigger
club with better players, then I'm sure he will come into his own.
One vote for Digger Barnes.
Cunno.

| .1 must be another contender for note of the year.
The original question was whether Barnes was comparable with Giggs at
the same age. Well, at 19, Barnes was an unknown at Watford so is there
anything to compare?
As for saying Giggs drifts out of games, that's true, but currently
Barnes doesn't even drift INTO them; but when Barnes has a half decent
team around him, may be he might stir himself to do something.

Giggs only needs two good international performances with Wales
(he's had one already), and he'll be a better player at that level than
Barnes.
Giggs is more a "Best" type of player and Barnes a type of "Robson"
player, coming more from midfield attacking defences, so they are not
really that comparable but at least wait a few years and see what Giggs
is like then. Barnes only played well in the three or four years
'86-'90 before the 'Pool decline.
Both are exciting players to watch, but to compare them now !!!

Giggs is class and at only 19 he is the hottest property to hit the english
game since Best. I have had the pleasure of watching Giggs live over the last
2 seasons and his form this season is a lot better then last year, and this
is the sign of a great player. He was new last season and people did not know
what to expect, this year they knew what he could do and they still can't
stop him. Barnes has only ever been a good league player, he has never shined
on the International scene, so in my oponion it's no contest. Give me Giggsy
any time. Someone mentioned that Barnes his the best free taker in the league.
I must say they Giggsy takes a good free tick, just ask the Belgium keeper.

Giggs is a great player, and will go on to be far better than Barnes,
who, despite his talent, couldnt do it on when it really matters, on the
International stage. The only problem Giggs will have is that Wales
never qualify for anything, so he wont be able to show us his talents
in a World Cup.
Giggs...definatly.

Wales might qualify for a World Cup sometime in Giggs's career.
(heck we're not choosy we'll take qualifying for the Euro thing)
Like Manc supporters living in the hope of that elusive League title
we hope that it might happen sometime/anytime in our lifetimes.
Barnes is towards the end of his career, Giggs is stil at the start of
his career so I think Cunno is comparing Apples and Oranges here IMHO.

I'll support Cunno and state that Barnes at his best is better than
Giggs at the moment. Barnes has scored some of the best goals that we
have ever seen. Remember the goal in Rio in 1984. It was the best goal
that had been seen in a long time. As Cunno said, Barnes was also
instrumental in Liverpool's successes during the period 1988-90. During
that time, they came agonisingly close to winning three doubles.
Barnsie for me.

All this talk about Gigg's and Barnes is utter rubbish, the best player
to come out of the English game in recent years has to be Gazza, both
these players arn't good enough to lace his boots. If I had to choose
between the two it would have to be Giggs, It's a shame he picked
Wales, he could of gone on to great things playing with England but I
guess at that age we all make mistakes we regret later on in life.

Neil,
Don't be talking rubbish. "Great things playing with England". You
must be joking I hope. England are a very ordinary side with donkeys like
Dixon, Adams, Palmer, Batty, etc. Giggs has great talented players around
him at Wales e.g., Southall, Speed, Saunders, Rush & Hughes. The thing is
with England is that Taylor doesn't have a settled experience squad like
Wales or Rep. of Ireland. Both Yorath & Charlton know to a tee the thirteen
or fourteen players that they can pick from whereas Taylor has too many
players to choose from resulting in a lot of donkeys coming in and out of
the squad and hence no consistency.

At the moment Giggs is a better player than Barnes..
In his heyday 87-89 approx Barnes was the best player in the English
League by a mile..
Although Giggs is a brilliant player , Paul McGrath and Paul Ince
on this seasons form are better players..
At his best Barnes was more valuable to Liverpool than Giggs is
for United today...United have other players just as important
In his hayday I reckon Barnes was the better player....
But then again Giggs is still very young and will get better...

Steve, I remember one remarkable evening last year. The boy Page picked
it up in his own half, sauntered past the whole of the other team, and
then blasted an unstoppable drive into the corner.
Six goals that night wasn't it?

PS The only comparision I can make with Giggs however is that whilst he
can juggle a football, you can juggle a pudding bowl on ya gut.

stuff, or is drinking too much of it. Or he could have injured his foot
when he scored that spectacular goal, half volleying the can into the

| Here is another vote for Barnsie.Barnsie in the peak of his career was
much better than Giggsie is now,and is better than than Giggsie is ever
likely to be.Barnsie was an attraction and anyone that ever enjoyed
football enjoyed watching him.Barnes ability to take on players and
beat them well, coupled with his great vision and passing ability(he
could put a ball up a flys a#$e at sixty yards)made him a superb
player. He was a superb athlete always coming back to make timely
tackles and interceptions in defence, then turning defence into
blistering attack with one pass.Giggsie will never have his
ability. This is another one of M.U.F.C dreams which because he is so
hyped up will never become the player he can be.Remember young Sharp.

Anthony,
