290.0. "World Youth (Under 20) Championship" by GIDDAY::PARSONS (Which Space Corps Directive ?) Mon Mar 08 1993 02:53

Just in case anyone is interested, the World Youth Cup started
here in Australia this weekend. First round of matches were
    as follows :

    Group A

    Australia 2 Colombia 1
    Russia 2 Cameroon 0

    Group B

    Germany 1 Portugal 0
    Uruguay 1 Ghana 1

    Group C

    England 1 South Korea 1
    U.S.A. 6 Turkey 0

    Group D

    Mexico 3 Norway 0
    Brazil 0 Saudi Arabia 0

    Highlights :

European champions Turkey thrashed 6-0 by USA. World champions
Portugal beaten by Germany with a 90th minute goal.
England score own-goal and don't equalise until 84th minute.

FIFA ruling that laws on bookings to be strictly applied lead
to 4 red cards and nearly 50 yellow cards in first 8 games
(including 10 in opening game, 3 Australian 7 Colombian). A
Brazilian player was sent-off for trying to head the ball out
of the goalkeepers hands ! Since most squads are only 15-18
strong we will be down to 5-a-side come the semi-finals.
Russia are already reduced to 13 players for tonights game
    vs Australia (including 2 goalkeepers).

Ghana unlucky against Germany having led 1-0 and 2-1.

    re: .3

Uruguay won their second game against Portugal 2-1 with a 90th
minute goal. They led 1-0 in the 9th minute, were pulled back to
1-1 mid-way through the 1st half and then a bad mistake by the
Portugese defence in the 90th minute for the second game running
    led to the late winner.

Uruguay now play Germany in their final game. If that is a draw
then both countries will have identical points, goal difference
and goals scored and conceded. I don't know what will be used to
    'tie-break' them (toss a coin ?).

Brazil by far the best team so far, followed by Uruguay and Ghana.

If after 30 mins there is no goal then it's on to penalties.

Ghana and Brazil won very easily. England started with Barmby but
he was injured again. England missed a few easy chances in the last
2-3 minutes of extra-time. Mexico hit the bar with first penalty,
next 7 were all scored and then Watson the England keeper saved
Mexico's last. This England team were not taught penalty taking by

I saw the Mexican penalty miss last night on TV. The English
goalkeeper went mad celebrating and there appeared to be quite
a bit of support for England. How have the attendances been so
far and has Australian TV given the finals much exposure (given
that home interest is still represented, I'd imagine so)?

290.12High profile tournament over hereGIDDAY::PARSONSWhich Space Corps Directive ?Tue Mar 16 1993 23:0323

Apparently the attendences are much better than the last time
Australia staged this tournament (1981) and better then the
Australian Soccer Fedaration guaranteed to FIFA (they guaranteed
    an aggregate of 300,000).

SBS has blanket coverage (8 hours+ a day !) and ABC are broadcasting
highlights. Now Australia are in the semis the other 3 commercial
channels have jumped on the bandwagon and it's the lead story in
the sports news (even above losing the cricket to New Zealand ;-) )

Tonights semi in Melbourne between Australia and Brazil is sold out,
the first time that's ever happened to a 'soccer' game in Victoria.

The twin objectives for this tournament were to impress all the IOC
delegates here at the moment for Sydney's 2000 Olympics bid (over 20%
of voting delegates are here at the moment), and to push FIFA to
upgrade Australia's status for World Cup qualifiers. So far both
objectives seem to have been achieved.

On the injury front, England will be without Barmby and Myers for
their semi-final with Ghana. These are the two best players in the
    England squad.

I read yesterday that England had been playing a rather uninspiring
defensive game throughout the tournament and would have their work
cut out to beat the silky skills of the Ghanians. Shades of Italy 90
and the senior team's run up to the match against Cameroon. I guess

Re. a few back "the silky skills of Ghana". I don't know if it was intended as a
joke but you surely know Ghana has a reservoir of young players who already
play in Europe, such as Nili Lamptey, 17, in Anderlecht (Brussels). Ghana is the
country which gave Pel Abedi to Olympique Marseille.

Unfortunately, they might not make it to the US World Cup.

No, that was'nt a joke. I think the African nations play football in
the manner it should be played, with the emphasis on skill rather
than athleticism. Cameroon's exhibitions at the last world cup
certainly proved that and they would have found themselves in the
semi final against West Germany had the defence been a little
    more disciplined.

I watched both Semi-Finals live last night. Brazil easily beat
Australia, controlling the whole game so that Australia did not
make the Brazilian keeper make one save.

Ghana totally outclassed England for the first 30 minutes to lead
2-0 with a unlucky (for England) penalty and a dubious free kick
just outside the penalty area. After 30 minutes it looked like
England were going to lose 5 or 6-0. Ghana was playing with England
stringing 15-20 passes around and just keeping possession.

England then started to play and at least got to touch the ball a few
times up until half-time. The second-half was vastly different with
England the better side, getting a penalty just a few minutes into
the half and then creating several chances after that, including
hitting the bar with a volley when unmarked 6 yards out. Ghana still
had chances on the break and when they did attack they had 6 or 7
players attacking not just one or two.

Overall the best two teams in the tournament have reached the final.
England did well to get so far considering the usual lack of
preparation for this tournament. Teams like Mexico and South Korea
played 60 games in the past couple of years in preparation for this
tournament. Australia and Brazil played each other 6 times since
October in preperation for last night. England played 12 games in
total (and that includes all the qualifying games for the finals).

Two years ago Ghana beat Brazil to win the Under 17 world title. It's
essentially the same teams who meet again on Saturday.

Re .24:

"Two years ago Ghana beat Brazil to win the Under 17 world title. It's
essentially the same teams who meet again on Saturday."

I was under the impression that Ghana beat the (then) European champions,
Spain, in the final of the u-17 World Championship here in Italy...

The same title-winning side then reassembled with the addition of Abedi Pele's
brother Ayew to take a very creditible bronze medal home from the Barcelona
olympics last year, where this time they went out to a very classy Spanish
side composed entirely of fully-professional, first-team, first-division
players. It was no surprise to anyone that such a side should go on to win
the gold, especially in view of the fact that they had home advantage...

More to the point perhaps, what are the chances of getting hold of a video of
the final, given that as result of Italy's twisted logic (their team did not
qualify, therefore the tournament is not good enough to be shown here) I will
not be able to see the match.

Yours (absurdly?) hopefully...

Ghana beat Brazil in the semi-final not the final. The reference
I heard was Ghana beat Brazil 'on their way to winning' the 1991
    title.

Anyway in Under 20 terms Brazil are ranked No. 1 in the world. I
don't know what Ghana are ranked, but Australia are No. 9 and
    England No. 19.

and equalised with a deflected own goal. Then with 5 mins to go
a great solo goal by Joachim (Leicester) won it for England.
Best England player in the tournament was Bart-Williams (Sheff
    Wed).

Final was a class above the earlier game. Brazil dominated first
10 mins but Ghana then broke away and scored with their first
real chance. Very fast and skillful from then until half-time.
5 mins into 2nd half Brazil equalised and they had the better of
the second half. Then with just 15 seconds of normal time left
Brazil had a break from defence and scored. Both Brazil goals
were set up by Adriano who I think we'll see in US in '94.
Attendence for these games was a sell out 40,000.

Overall this tournament was vastly more entertaining than Sweden 92
or Italia 90 and less cynical (perhaps the players develop that trait
when they get a little older). Some of FIFA's new instructions to
referees worked, like getting the game to run faster and ignoring
players thrashing around on the ground pretending they were injured.
If they were truly injured they usually managed to crawl/hobble off
the pitch to receive treatment. If they weren't they usually made
'miraculous' recoveries when the ball came near them again.

Also bookings picked up in the group games were not counted in the
knockout stage. If this had happened in 1990 Cameroon would have faced
England with a full strength team, and Gascoigne wouldn't have been
crying against West Germany in the semi-final. From this tournament
I reckon Africa will have a team in the World Cup Semi-Finals by
    1998 at the latest.
