| I would'nt say Scotland are too short of good players
after all English clubs are always after them, but what I would say is
that some of Roxy's choices are a lot to be desired.

| I think Scotland have only 1 outstanding player and that is the Great
Brian McLair, He does such a lot for Scotland and I think its the
rest of the team that let us down. Wasn't his Grandfather Born in
Bo'ness...?
P.S I think I should point out that Im being admitted to a
Mental Institution next week.

| I think Simon means in line with Eire since Northern Ireland don't use
this rule though the Guardian Weekly did mention that N.I and Wales
were consdering this too.

282.5 | The granny rule | GALVIA::SPAIN | There's always the U.S. | Wed Jan 13 1993 20:50 | 32 |

Northern Ireland now use the granny rule. The turning point was
probably Alan Kernaghan but they'll never admit it.
Alan Kernaghan was born in England but went back to Bangor as a kid. His
parents were English but their parents were Irish. He grew up in
Bangor but didn't qualify for NI because he was born in England. He
qualifies for Ireland only because his grandparents were born on the
island of Ireland and thus are entitled to Irish citizenship. He would
have no natural link with the Republic of Ireland.
In this case Jack Charlton exploited the rule and I do think he was
taking it too far. Still we have got a very talented central defender.
Believe it or not almost all the Irish team are Irish or have Irish
parents. John Aldridge qualifies under the granny rule but I beleiev
player slike Andy Townsend and Tony Cantscorino qualify under the
parentage rule.
There is still a general hands off agreement between the FAI and IFA.
All the NI squad qualify for the Republic and all the Republic squad
could play for any of the home countries. Any citizen of the Republic
of Ireland who was born before 1949 or whose parents were born before
1949 is entitled to a British passport. Thus they could play for
England or Northern Ireland. Now any person born in Northern Ireland
is entitled to an Irish passport and they could play for the Republic.
Some Roman Catholics feel alienated form the Northern Ireland state and
could in theory play for the Republic. However the unwritten agreement
is applied here. It does mean that the NI team is non sectarian and
players are picked on ability. The FAI only accepted Alan Kernaghan
when NI turned him down.
