281.0. "Sheff Utd Top of the League (or Bottom?)" by YUPPY::PATEMAN (Our Nige is Their Nige Now - Thank the Lord) Mon Jan 11 1993 08:45

In an attempt to sort out Messrs Panes and McCabe I give you the Fair
Play League. The Mail puts sending offs automatically to the top, here
bookings are worth one point, offs 2 points, League only which seems
fairer, with sending offs as tie-breakers.

It would be different if cups were in as Looneypool have had three
    red cards already!

    Anyway, before Saturday's matches:

    Sheff Utd 35pts	2 off
    Southampton 35	1
    Wimbledon 30	2
    Man City 27	1
    Arsenal 26
    Blackburn 25	2
    Spurs 22	1
    Leeds 21
    Palace 20	2
    Chelsea 20
    Sheff Weds 19
    Ipswich 18	1
    Man Utd 18
    M'boro 17
    Oldham 17
    Coventry 16
    Liverpool 16
    QPR 16
    Everton 13	2
    Villa 10
    Forest 9
    Norwich 8

Palace & Everton each got another booking on Saturday, and Weds and
Norwich got none. Palace put the figures in their programme so I'll
    update it after home games.

RE .0

I think the Mail has it right, sendings off first, then bookings.
Its like all leagues, wins are better than draws, gold medal better than silver
etc. A sending off is far more serious than the 2 bookings you've defined.
281.3Many ARE for two bookingsYUPPY::PATEMANOur Nige is Their Nige Now - Thank the LordMon Jan 11 1993 13:228
So Everton, with 9 bookings and 2 offs (1 highly dubious for a handball
by the 'keeper) are a worse team than the Arse with 26 bookings? That
doesn't stack up. With many offs for 2 bookable offences (Palace had
one with Lee Sinnott) it seems highly questionable to plave them as
paramount in this sort of example. Maybe you could up the offs to three
points, but that still doesn't change the order that much.

Doesn't Julian Dicks beat the lot of them ?

...yes, alright, I know he plays in Division 1, but 3 dismissals in half
    a season takes some beating!
